When God Reveals His Presence To You Youll Know And Feel It
Remember the electricity that races through you when someone famous walks by you? You cant miss it. Ditto when God draws near you. When He does, imagine He is looking right at yousmiling. Thats one of the best ways to feel blessed, isnt it? These experiences are sometimes called moments of transcendence.
You usually cant predict when God will make His presence known to you. It could be at a huge evangelistic event, citywide prayer gathering, or Christian concert. It could be while youre walking outside, looking up at the night sky, or watching a magnificent sunrise or sunset. Then again, it could be when youre working, doing Gods will or spending time with dear Christian friends.
But I cant know when it will happen should encourage you. It should encourage you to think about God, meditate on these truths, and pay attention to what youre feeling. Never waste moments of transcendence by praising whats created. Instead, praise the Creator!
Yes, you can experience Gods presence here and there all through your life. Its not one-and-done. Heaven alone is proof of that!
God Can Reveal His Presence To Anyone In Any Manner He So Chooses
He proved this with Moses and Aaron . He proved this with Elijah in a variety of ways . He also proved this by sending an angel to the Roman centurion Cornelius . Ultimately, He proved this by sending His own Son, Jesus Christ.
This truth is why there are untold tens of thousands of reports of God appearing to people all over the world today, typically in their dreams. While God commands us to proclaim the Good News Gospel of Jesus Christ to everyone in every nation, God hasnt tied His own hands. Instead, Hes winning people to Jesus Christ every day in every country on this planet. Hes making sure the wedding feast of the Lamb will be joyous beyond measure.
Ways To Experience The Glorious Presence Of God Today
Question: should we actively seek to experience the presence of God on a daily basis?
Depending on your background, that question may send you into a freak-out spiral or cause you to long for God in a deeper way.
The reality is that when we talk about experiencing the presence of God, things can get real weird real fast. Suddenly, were in the realm of the subjective. Of feelings. Of supernatural experiences that go beyond the daily norm.
Or are we?
If youve been around the church for any length of time, youve probably encountered at least some skin-crawling weirdness around the subject of experiencing the presence of God .
But I dont think it has to be this way. In fact, as I read Scripture, Im convinced that God wants us to truly experience his presence on a daily basis. We just need to reshape the conversation regarding what it means to experience Gods presence.
With that mind, here are four simple, utterly ordinary, utterly profound ways we can enjoy the presence of God every day.

Mindful Pauses And Check
You dont always have 10 or 15 minutes to spend meditating, but sometimes you have a moment to pause. You dont need more than one or two minutes to do a mindful check-in.
Maybe you can take a quick break in the middle of your work day between finishing one task and starting the next. Maybe youve just finished talking to someone on the phone or just gotten home from somewhere, and you need a moment to reset.
Simply take a couple of minutes to stop, close your eyes if its comfortable, and direct your attention to Gods presence with you. Thank Him for being with you, and talk with Him for a moment. Tell Him whatevers on your mind. Take a couple of deep breaths, and simply rest in the knowledge that He is with you right now, before going on with your day with a continued awareness of His presence.
A short mindful pause is as easy as that, but there are a lot of other similar exercises you can do in less than 5 minutes. For a list of Christian mindfulness exercises that you can do as short, mindful check-ins throughout the day, read this post: 7 Christian Mindfulness Exercises to See God in Daily Life
We Experience The Presence Of God When We Fellowship With Christians
In Matthew 18:20, Jesus said, For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.
In other words, Jesus himself is uniquely present whenever Christians gather in his name.
Your small group meeting? Jesus is present.
The Sunday gathering? Jesus is present.
The womens Bible study, youth group, corporate prayer night, or worship night? Jesus is present at those gatherings.
You and a friend getting coffee and then praying together? Hes there also.
I take Matthew 18:20 to mean that the presence of God manifests in a unique way when believers gather together. In other words, we experience the presence of God in a way that we simply cant when were by ourselves.
God does something special when we pray and sing and serve together. I think this is partially why the :
not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
The reason we shouldnt neglect to meet together is that it is one of the ways God preserves us to the end. As we encourage one another, we experience the presence of God in a particular, preserving way.
Talk about motivation to stay close to other Christians!

Christian Mindfulness: Being Present With Gods Presence
So if God is always present with us, we should learn to simply walk in His presence. We can simply be aware that He is near, and that the light of His face is shining on us with love and grace, wherever we are and whatever were doing.
When the Lord highlighted these things to me through His Word, I rested in the knowledge that He was with me, and I started to cultivate a conscious awareness of His presence.
It wasnt until a few years later that I learned about the modern concept of mindfulness. It felt like an epiphany to connect the dots between mindfulness and my Christian worldview. The main idea of mindfulness, which is awareness of the present moment, is amplified by the Christian idea of awareness of Gods presence.
Mindfulness emphasizes paying attention to our experiences in the present moment. As Christians we believe that God is with us in the present moment. This brings a whole new layer of meaning to a Christian perspective of mindfulness, because we can experience Gods presence in the present moment.
When we pay attention to our experiences in the present moment, we can start to see Gods hand in everything. A natural response to the realization of His active presence in our lives is to Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances .

At any moment and in any circumstance, the soul that seeks God may find Him, and practice the presence of God.
Brother Lawrence, a seventeenth-century French monk, learned to practice the presence of God at all times. And you can, too. Here in one volume are two classic works by Brother Lawrence. Each book reveals how to practice God’s presence and see His glory in every facet of your life.
The Practice of the Presence of God is a collection of documented conversations and letters that reveal the heart of this humble man. He wrote, The time of business does not with me differ from the time of prayer, and in the noise and clatter of my kitchen I possess God in as great tranquility as if I were upon my knees at the blessed sacrament.
Brother Lawrence’s wisdom and spiritual insights have helped bring people closer to God for more than three centuries. The Spiritual Maxims of Brother Lawrence, a lesser known but equally outstanding work, is a summary of his teachings. Throughout, he develops one great theme, best expressed by the psalmist, In Thy Presence is fulness of joy.

The Purposes Of The Church Are Tied To The Presence Of God
The presence of God has massive implications for the way we understand the church . The New Testament calls the church a temple for a reason. Through this image, we see that the community of Christ isin this time of waiting on Christs returnthe instrument the Lord uses to disseminate his presence to a lost and sinful world.
Accordingly, the church has two clear purposes: 1) the church works within itself for the sanctification of its members to prepare Gods people for Gods present and future presence and 2) the church works externally to share the gospel so that the lost may enjoy Gods presence now and forever as well.

We Are Always In The Presence Of God
Lets start with the most obvious one. Because God is omnipresent, we are always in his presence. Ponder that with me for a second and see if it doesnt cause a shiver of delight to wrap around your spine. Every second of every day, we truly are in the presence of God.
We dont need to do any special rituals or make a pilgrimage to a holy city. No need to handle relics or offer prayers to the saints.
We always live Coram Deo before the face of God.
But because we are in Christ, this reality goes even deeper. We are not just in the presence of God in the same way that the rest of creation is. Rather, the presence of God has made his home in us. The Holy Spirit has taken up residence in us, and we truly are temples of God.
This is why Paul says in 1 Corinthians 6:19:
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God?
These are absolutely breathtaking words. Gods presence the same presence that caused Isaiah to fall on his face in terror is not out there somewhere. If we are in Christ, the presence of God truly is within us, and we have access to this glorious presence at all times through Christ our mediator.
The sweet, holy presence of God is always available to us, and we dont need to use any manipulative revival techniques to access it.
Our Experience Of Gods Expression
And here is my answer to the question, then what does it refer to? My summary answer would go like this: The presence of God or the nearness of God is a metaphor from two sides: our experience of it, and Gods expression of it.
Our experience of it means that we taste or feel or realize the reality of God more directly, more authentically, more intimately, more effectively more certainly, more satisfyingly, or more terrifyingly, and so on. In other words, his presence, as we experience him, is the heightening of his reality in our lives, either for good, if we are in his grace, or for ill, if we are under his wrath. Which is why Jesus makes all the difference here to shield us and make God a welcoming reality or presence for us.
So, for example, we read in Psalm 100:2: Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! Or James 4:8: Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. These are invitations into the fuller, more intense, more certain, more joyful, more satisfying, more transforming experience of the reality of God. That is my first half of the metaphor.

Pray God Reveals The Barriers In Your Heart
Dear Lord, show us how to live in a place where we are aware of our constant communion with You.As Your child I humbly come before You. Thank You that I get to rest under the shelter of Your wings, here in the secret place of Your presence. I praise You, and I worship You, Lord.
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most HighShall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I humbly hand over my heart to You, and I say, Lord, heres my heart, search me and know me, show me anything in my life that is keeping me from being as close as I can be with You.
Search me, God, and know my heart test me and know my anxious thoughts.See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
As You show me these things in my heart and in my life, Holy Spirit, will You show me what You would like me to do? Will You show me how to let go of these things? Will You show me if there is any unforgiveness or pride in my heart?
Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Ways To Be More Aware Of God
On many Saturdays throughout the year, I watch as a man and woman pledge their earthly lives solely to one another. The vows are the centerpiece of the service as each individual makes some big promises to God, their families, and each other. But those vows are immediately followed by the giving and receiving of rings. Forever to be worn, the rings symbolize the words spoken on that day. They serve a dual purpose. They are a loud announcement to everyone else of the commitments that have been made. And they are a gentle reminder to each individual that they are married and should act accordingly.
Imagine a husband saying, I forgot I was married. Its laughable. While many husbands and wives act as though they are not married, none of them do it innocently. They break their vows by intention not by accident. The commitments they have made dictate the actions they should choose. While it doesnt ensure the right decisions, it does rightfully put the expectation upon them.
The existence of a spouse dictates how we should act.
The existence of God does the same.
While spouses dont lose awareness that they are married, many followers of God lose awareness of His presence. They forget His activity, commands, and desire to work through them. As we lose awareness, we become distracted, discouraged, and disobedient.
