Where To Stay Seattle This Article Offers A Breakdown Of The Best Visitor
When traveling I often run into curious people who ask where to stay in Seattle. The answer, of course, is that it depends. Since I live on Capitol Hill I might be considered biased when recommending my beautiful tree-lined area focused around green spaces like Volunteer Park only a 45 minute walk to Pike Place Market in Downtown Seattle.
So, just to keep myself honest, I did a bit of research on seven popular neighborhoods where people stay in Seattle: Downtown, Capitol Hill, Ballard/Freemont, Green Lake/Wallingford, Columbia City, Queen Anne and West Seattle. Since there are always times when staying close to the airport is convenient, the Seattle Tacoma International Airport area is included for relative comparison. I also added in a general category for the East Side of the metro area places like Bellevue, Kirkland and Redmond, Washington. These areas, along with highlights , are shown on the Google Map below.
I looked up information from Walkscore , added a subjective metric around the scenery and attractions , and assessed Airbnb rentals to get a relative range for lodging costs.
Please keep in mind that while I used Airbnb information to assess the lodging costs, hotel pricing usually correlates with these numbers, because location is important and a premium is usually placed on convenience. But rates vary, especially in the high season of Summer where the entire Seattle area is at a premium.

Seattle has plenty of interesting areas, some of which are ideally suited to tourists visiting the city! If youre still wondering where to stay in Seattle, weve put together a bit of a summary below:
- We recommend first-time visitors stay in one of the downtown neighborhoods of Belltown, the downtown core, Pioneer Square or the International District. These areas are very central, making them perfect if youre without a car and will be walking most places.
- Lower Queen Anne is another very central area, perfect for those interested in visiting the attractions within the neighborhood: Space Needle, Seattle Center, Museum of Pop Culture, Chihuly Garden and Glass, Childrens Museum and Bill & Melinda Gates Visitors Center.
- If youre wondering the best place to stay in Seattle for nightlife, Pioneer Square, Capitol Hill and Belltown take that prize.
- For laid-back, young and fun neighborhoods, Belltown, Capitol Hill and Ballard are good bets. Capitol Hill is known as being particularly LGBTQI friendly.
Safety Tips For Travelers
It’s rare that you’ll be a victim of a crime while visiting Seattle, but even if you are, it’s most likely to be a property crime. Here are some general tips to avoid being targeted:
- Like most cities, Seattles safest areas are outside of the downtown core and tend to be residential areas or residential with light commercial. Among the safest neighborhoods are Sunset Hill, Ballard, Magnolia, Alki, Magnolia, Lower Queen Ann, and Wallingford.
- Dont leave valuables visible inside your car. If youre parking for the day, look for well-lit lots or parking spaces. If the parking space has low visibility for any reason, thats all the more chance someone might feel comfortable breaking into your car while youre out for the day.
- Always keep your purse or wallet on you, either secured by a zipper or in your front pocket.
