If youre like me, you prefer to do a bit of research before you plan a trip, and finding the right accommodation to suit your tastes and budget is paramount to having a stress-free vacation. Plus, its always a good idea to book hotels and campgrounds well in advance.
There are so many great places to stay along the 100-mile cliff-hugging stretch of the Big Sur coastline between Carmel and San Simeon everything from luxury hotels and resorts, to cost-effective motels, to glamping and public campgrounds. No matter your budget, theres an accommodation to suit your needs.

Rivers End Cabin On Scenic Carmel Point
A home away from home, this cabin is located in a residential area in Carmel-by-the-Sea if youre planning to explore the Big Sur with a group of up to 8 people. This 3-bedroom guesthouse features three fireplaces, a fully equipped kitchen, a family room, and a dining nook that leads to the backyard deck and gardens.
Its proximity to the beach is unbeatable. Its also close to Crossroads Shopping Center, downtown art galleries, boutiques, restaurants, and wine tasting rooms. Youll also get to enjoy gorgeous sunsets, picturesque drives, and trails.

Big Sur Camping: Public Campgrounds In Big Sur
Camping in Big Sur includes everything from tenting to RV camping even glamping!
Be sure to check the Parks website ahead of time to ensure the area hasnt been closed due to flood damage or other adverse conditions. And youll want to make advance reservations some campgrounds are booking six months ahead. Online reservations can be made at Reserve California or you can call tollfree: 1-800-444-7275.
The Big Sur Chamber of Commerce provides a good overview of camping in the area, and they do a great job of updating the information. For instance, I found out that Bottchers Gap Campground is now closed until further notice.
Sadly, due to dry weather, California has lately been a high-risk area for wildfires. As a result, many campgrounds have fire restrictions. You can check with the U.S. Forest Service here before heading out on your camping adventure.

Luxurious Large Cozy Cabin On A Cliff

Perched on a cliff off of the Big Sur coast, this property can accommodate up to 6 guests comfortably. While this property accepts pooch in your stay, keep in mind that this cliff cabin is located on a very steep cliff with a sheer drop of several hundred feet to the ocean without a secure fence. So, make sure that you dont let them run outside the property without a leash.
But then again, this cabin is located on iconic Highway 1 and only 15 minutes away from the Big Sur and 25 minutes away from Carmel. This means that youll still have a lot of places to bring your dog during your stay.
Spectacular Stone Cabin With Ocean Views
A 3-bedroom, off-the-grid stone cabin, this property is a fully sustainable ocean view guesthouse in the middle of an expansive marine terrace with uninterrupted views of the Pacific coast from all directions.
This cabin is located in a very private location and isolated from everything with spectacular views of the ocean. You can start your day sipping on your coffee as you watch humpback whales or other marine life while your dog is running in the large yard. Sand Dollar Beach is only a mile away and there are a lot of hiking trails and paths to explore.
