Alamosa is a farming community, and not a tourist destination. I had dinner in a little restaurant called Ruby’s Slipper and it closed at 8:30 in spite of the fact that it served beer on tap. I stayed in Alamosa because it was situated between my other destinations. The Great Sand Dune National Park is near Alamosa and I visited it, but it’s 16 miles off the highway. It was fun watching the kids snowboard on the sand dunes, but the walking is difficult. I got my daily workout without climbing any dunes.

The Alamosa National Wildlife Refuge is where wildlife enthusiasts and bird-watchers go to catch a glimpse of the migratory birds and animals that thrive in the San Luis Valley. Some of the birds that can be spotted include hawks, egrets, herons, pelicans, falcons, and owls, and the 11,100-acre refuge features wetland habitats, meadows, and stunning views.
Theres a trail that visitors can hike or bike, and theres also the option to drive the auto-tour road or hike to the Bluff Overlook.

Alamosa Itself Is A Small And Very Poor Town
Alamosa itself is a small and very poor town. Three of the restaurants we found on google were permanently closed. We try to go to the Monte Vista and Alamosa National Wildlife Refuges during the Sandhill Crane migrations, and the cranes never disappoint. One reason for choosing the Sunset Inn was to be on the road, 8 S, that leads directly west to the Monte Vista site. The cranes can be best seen in the morning, and we saw many of them even as late as 11 am!

This hotel is nice and affordable, the staff is attentive and friendly. The rooms are big and spacious. You can enjoy free breakfast there as well. Hotel staff appeared new and not overly friendly but think that will improve over time. I’ve stayed at the other two hotels in the area and this Hampton Inn is FAR superior – to the comfortable, clean, and well decorated room, to the exercise facility, to the very good breakfast. Always enjoy too that Hampton Inn provides “to go” breakfast snack bags for those who have to get on the road.
