Cycling To Victoria Beach
For a pretty out and back ride, with little traffic, head across the Annapolis Causeway from Annapolis Royal. This is a remarkable spot especially when the tides are changing and you can feel and see the power of the churning water. Itâs the only place in North America right now that generates energy from the tides.
At the end of the causeway, head west towards Victoria Beach on a road that offers views of the Annapolis River, the Annapolis Basin and the Digby Gulf.
Plan a stop at Port Royal, the site of a French Colonial settlement in the early 17th century, and now a National Historic Site. You can take a tour or just admire the view. As you continue cycling youâll pass one lighthouse and the rest of the ride is very pastoral with gently rolling hills. Retrace your steps to return.

Advice Please We Are Spending Ten Days In Nova Scotia
We are spending ten days around then have five nights to get from Annapolis Royal to Montreal and I’m feeling anxious about distances! The children are good in the car and we would love to visit Tadoussac to try to see the belugas for a night before maybe spending four nights somewhere with great food, accommodation and by water/lake. Am not sure whether to take the Digby ferry and then whether to drive through Maine or what! Any advice would be hugely helpful – the children are 13 and 15 and it’s our first visit to the East having spent our last three holidays on Canada’s West/Vancouver Island/Rockies etc.
You do not save time driving through the US as there is no Interstate going East/West and the driving can be very slow.
Taking the ferry from Digby may save time, but only if the timing is right. I have never done this and I hope others will chime in.
Here are some maps to give you some alternatives:
Heading down to Digby and going through southern New Brunswick would add a lot of kms in not much time, I would go with a much more direct route…
If you are spending time in Annapolis, you might want to do some whalewatching nearby at the Digby Neck/Brier Island area.
It’ a rich feeding ground where you’ll see Humpbacks & perhaps the endangered Right Whale, plus other marine life.
Also, check whalewatching under boat tours on the following website: www.novascotia.com
