Njs Two Asbury Parks Turn 150
Asbury Park ran a service economy before the term was invented.
Founded 150 years ago, this mile-square resort town on the coast of New Jersey was built to give Americans what they wanted, to mirror the nations values. And that mirror has proved revealing and disturbing right up to the present and the birth of a new Asbury Park.
Founder James Bradley designed the city to attract white middle-class Methodists. Writer and native son Stephen Crane called the place sober and pointed out that it made nothing.
Families would come for a couple of months in the summer, stay in the big hotels, bathe in the surf, enjoy the amusements along the boardwalk. A proper city, it sold no liquor, allowed no gambling, kept its bathers wrapped in yards of fabric so nothing untoward was revealed.
But the untoward turned out to be what Americans wanted. The local drugstores peddled booze and ran numbers lovers found places to rendezvous along the boardwalk. The proper city was a glittering façade. In its reflection, Crane saw a nation full of youthful dreams, riding wooden horses in circles, reaching for brass rings.
Meanwhile, a second, shadow city grew inland, across the tracks. The West Side was home to the people who cleaned the hotels, took out the trash, dug the sewers.
As Asbury went deep into debt to fund a beachfront Convention Hall and Casino, the Great Depression hit. After World War II, highways and automobile culture changed the city.

What I Liked Most Was The General Atmosphere Very Modern
What I liked most was the general atmosphere, very modern and fun lobby area. I love traveling with my dogs! Staff were great. I also liked that I could open a window! Location was perfect! The double player pinball machine was fantastic! I didnt like that NOTHING was complimentary, not even coffee. You paid for everything. My bathroom shower head kept falling off and the toilets didnt flush well. The bowling alley was disorganized and the lanes werent working. Also, the pool table in the lobby didnt work. NOT for business travel as theres no quiet place to work except inside your room. The hotel bar was also closed
