Explore Washington Crossing Historic Park

Travel Guide for New Hope & Doylestown Pennsylvania Things To Do, See & Eat in Bucks County

Washington Crossing Historic Park marks the spot where George Washingtons army crossed the Delaware on Christmas Day in 1776. The 500-acre site has been preserved, and you can view restored colonial buildings in the park. The park also contains Revolutionary War soldiers graves, stone memorials, Bowmans Hill Tower, and picnic pavilions. Online reservations are required for guided tours and also for entry to Bowmans Hill Tower.

Best Places To Hike Or Walk

Can people suggest some places to hike or walk in or near Bucks County please! Preferably places with tress and wooded areas!

A few of my regular places:

Tyler Park, Newtown.

Peace Valley Park/Lake Galena, Doylestown.

D& R Canal, Bristol to Easton.

Neshaminy State Park, Bensalem.

Silver Lake Nature Center, Levittown.

Churchville Nature Center, Churchville.

Huge vouch for Lake Galena. Awesome 6 mile loop with beautiful scenery.

I love all of these, but Peace Valley Park has a special place in my heart. Besides the 10k paved path around the lake, there are great fun trails in the woods. There are cool ruins on the trails on the east side.

I love going to peace valley park!

Adding Ralph Stover State Park

Pick a section of the canal path, you will rarely be disappointed.

Any particular suggestions you recommend? I am in Yardley so would be neat if anything closer to there? Problem is wife gets out of work at 6PM and everything is already dark. Biggest shock for me is that here in PA there arn’t really any street lights on regular roads let alone in the parks. I came from the DC area where many places and neighborhoods are fully lit at night.

Tyler Park, Falls Township Community Park, Ringing Rocks Park

All are great options. Ringing rocks is cool because it is more “woodsy” then the other 2 options but still not too difficult. I am Hella out of shape and we made it to the waterfall and back lol.

About Bucks County Hotels

Bucks County has relatively limited lodging options for families larger inns, hotels and motels are the best bets. There are numerous choices for couples: accommodations ranging from modest to elegant can be found in historic inns, small hotels, and B& Bs. Most hostelries include breakfast in their rates. Reserve earlyas much as three months ahead for summer and fall weekends. Many accommodations require a two-night minimum stay on weekends and a three-night minimum on holiday weekends. Many inns prohibit or restrict smoking. Because some inns are historic homes furnished with fine antiques, the owners may not allow children or may have age restrictions.

Bucks County Bed & Breakfast Association of Pennsylvania represents about 25 inns within Bucks County and Hunterdon County, New Jersey.

Cest La Vie French Bakery And Cafe

I stumped upon CEst La Vie while looking for somewhere to get a snack in New Hope. This tiny bakery is tucked behind several other buildings near the bridge to Lambertville, NJ.

Serving dozens of amazing looking pastries, this is exactly what I remember the French bakeries in Paris to be like. Im actually glad I dont live near CEst La Vie as I would probably eat way too many of their delicious desserts.

If youre looking for a sweet snack in New Hope, you cant go wrong with CEst La Vie. They dont seem to have a website, so check out their Yelp page for more information.

Listen To Ringing Rocks

Visit Ringing Rocks Park to swing a hammer and hear some of the rocks ringing like bells in a field of boulders. This is a most unique experience. If you hike a bit beyond the boulders, youll be rewarded with a waterfall.

Be sure to take your own hammer, since the park does not provide anything with which to ring the rocks. This excursion is for the sure-footed traveler. The path is flat and smooth, but navigating the rocks would be difficult for those with mobility issues.

A Reminder Of Pennsylvanias Historic Past

Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Hotels, B& Bs

From 1830 1880, the state of Pennsylvania built most of the covered bridges in the United States going against the trend after the Civil War to move from wood to iron. Perhaps it was because the first-ever covered bridge in America was built in Philadelphia in 1805. The original was created by Timothy Palmer, a craftsman from Massachusetts. His 550-foot bridge spanned the Schuylkill River. A roof and sides were added to Palmers design after estate owner Richard Peters suggested it would make the bridge more durable and more appealing to view from his property bordering the river.

This first bridge prompted the construction of other such structures across the eastern seaboard to assist carriages across waterways. As time went on, the low roofs and single lanes of the wooden structures encouraged many states to replace covered bridges with iron bridges. By 2018 the Federal Highway Administration reported that less than 1,000 covered bridges are left around the United States. Bucks County , which occupies the southeastern corner of Pennsylvania, once had 36 within its county limits. Today its home to 12 original or reconstructed bridges, some are 150 years old, and almost all are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Schofield Ford Covered Bridge

Schofield Ford Covered Bridge 101 Swamp Road, Newtown, PA.

Schofield Ford is an oak and hemlock bridge that crosses Neshaminy Creek in Tyler State Park. It is the longest covered bridge in Bucks County at 150 feet. Initially built in 1873, the beloved bridge sat proudly alongside farmland. In 1991 the structure was set on fire but restored in 1997. You will find the bridge in Tyler State Park, a 1,700 acre park at 101Swamp Road. The bridge is a short walk on foot and worth the trip. The opportunity to explore this bridge up close is fascinating as the restoration used original specifications . It was never painted, which is historically accurate.

Bucks County is a wonderful place to spend time back in the 19th century exploring covered bridges. Having completed the trail, I have an appreciation for the care and craftsmanship that has lasted over 150 years.

Pineapple Hill Inn Bed And Breakfast

Bucks County has a lot of bed and breakfasts, especially around New Hope. During a recent visit, I had the chance to stay at Pineapple Hill Inn Bed and Breakfast, currently the number one rated B& B in New Hope, according to Trip Advisor .

Located closer to Washington Crossing than New Hope, this is a perfect spot for those visiting Washington Crossing Historic Park, but makes a great jumping off spot for anyone wanting to explore the New Hope area.

The 9 rooms and suites in the home are furnished in your typical bed and breakfast style, and while nice, arent a reason to pick Pineapple Hill. However, the beautiful grounds and pool are definitely a great reason to pick this B& B.

The top reason to visit, however, has to be the breakfast and the hospitality of the innkeepers, Scott and Roy. Im not a huge fan of breakfast food, but I would stay here again just for the delicious breakfast and the amazing coffee. It was easily one of the best breakfasts Ive eaten anywhere.

For more information about staying at Pineapple Hill Inn Bed and Breakfast, check out their website.

Note: My visits to Calebs American Kitchen, M.O.M.s, Empanada Mama, and both hotels were hosted by Visit Bucks County, Visit Philly, or the establishment. However, the opinions expressed in the article are my own.

Stand In Two States At Once

Pennsylvania and New Jersey are separated by the Delaware River, making it challenging to stand in both states at once. However, the New Hope-Lambertville Bridge marks where both states split the river. This allows visitors to stand in both states at once! Its the only bridge that offers pedestrians this opportunity.

Where Are The Bridges Of Bucks County

The best way to see all of the bridges is to follow the suggested route on the Bucks County Covered Bridge Trail, which begins north of Washington Crossing State Park. If you start at the park and head north along River Road , you can make a loop through Bucks County with stops at all twelve bridges. Even though they are mapped out in a sequence, it is a self-guided tour. You can begin and end at any point. When visiting the area, you could make it a weekend trip.

Stop in one of the Delaware River towns for refreshments, provisions, or to stay for the weekend . For a romantic experience, stop to pick up some selections at a local store for a picnic lunch. Some of the bridges are located in parks or park-like settings and are perfect for dining alfresco. The tour is over 60 miles long, so if you visit each one, it could take a few hours . It is a lovely way to spend the day on the road, especially with the windows down and fresh breezes blowing through your hair.
