Places To Stay In Cannon Beach Oregon

Arcadia Beach Tide Pools

Rockaway Beach, Nehalem, Cannon Beach: Travel the Oregon Coast with Chef Bob Neroni

Explore the pools and discover cool, colorful marine life at Arcadia Beach State Recreation Site. Expect to find sea stars, sea anemones, hermit crabs, mussels, limpets, and who knows what else.

The beach is a beautiful place to explore, with plenty of tide pools hidden within the rocks and sea caves. There are several incredible rock formations to be found and even a waterfall.

If you look carefully, you will still be able to see the ancient road that was blasted out of the rock to allow horses to get over the point and back.

The best tide pool experience is usually at extremely low tides at this point, the base of the road is likely to be visible, and you should be able to see some sea life clinging to it.

Cannon Beach Is A Walkable Little Beach Town

Cannon Beach is a walkable little beach town. We stayed in the heart of the town, and rarely used our car once we arrived at the motel. The town reminded me of the combination of Mendocino, Martha’s Vineyard and Cape May Point, all places that I love to visit. Great restaurants, cafes, stores to visit. Beach walks are a must, as is the hike above the town. Next time, we will stay longer!

This is our second time staying at the Wayside Inn. The staff are great, the rooms are clean and comfortable. I love all of the Cannon Beach bunnies and I always visit Mo’s for dinner and Warren House Pub for lunch. Great value since it isn’t beach front but close enough to see it from the 3rd floor room we had.

Cannon Beach Is One Of The Most Stunning Beaches I’ve

Cannon beach is one of the most stunning beaches I’ve ever seen. The rock outcroppings on the beach are home to hundreds of sea stars and anemones at low tide. The forests in State Parks nearby have enormous evergreens and great hiking trails. For entertainment, skim boarding is popular at Cannon Beach and surfing is popular at Short Sands beach a 10 minute drive to the south. Families can enjoy the neighboring town of Seaside for typical beachside amusements, promenade, restaurants and shops. Make sure you enjoy a campfire on the beach at sunset. Fire rings abound and firewood is sold at most lodgings and stores.

Cannon Beach To Newport Time Adjustment

Things to do in Cannon Beach, Oregon

Google maps estimates it will take 2 hours 25 minutes to drive from Cannon Beach to Newport, Oregon. I know I have to adjust that time for tourist season and the weekend. We are leaving Cannon Beach around 2 pm on Friday, June 3rd, with a stop in Tillamook, before heading to Newport. How long do you think it will take me to drive that route?

5 replies to this topic

Add 20-25% to online estimates, plus how long you spend in the crush at the cheese factory and any other “must stop and see” places, like the whale watch center in Depoe Bay.

Also depends on what you have done in the CB area. Are you stopping for sites along the way? The Three Capes Loop? Stops south of Lincoln City including the Otter Crest Loop, a “must stop and see” as oregonpoppa said?

We will stop a few places along the way if they are close to the route, but no hiking! From Seattle to Newport is the longest day, but Im thinking I might need to spend the night before I get to Newport.

What is your total itinerary? If this is all part of a much longer trip and you’re willing to skip Oregon’s northern coast, you can get to Newport much faster via I-5 to 18 to 101 or I-5 to 20 to Newport. Figure three hours plus from Seattle to Portland and another 3.5 hours to Newport.

Taking 18 through the Willamette Wine District to Lincoln Beach and south on 101 through Depoe Bay to Newport would be a good alternate route.

Nehalem Bay State Park

Nehalem Bay State Park is a beautiful place to visit if you have somehow run out of things to do at Cannon Beach. It has literally miles of beach to enjoy, a huge campsite, and even an airstrip.

The state park itself is located on a long sand spit, with Neahkahnie Mountain towering behind it. There are some great trails here, including the 1.8-miles Nehalem Bay Trail and the longer 5.2-mile Nehalem Spit Trail, taking you all the way down to the end of the spit.

If you have had enough hiking, there is a range of horseback riding excursions, which could be a great alternative way of viewing this part of the coast.

There is a boat ramp right on the bay, fishing, kayaking, and crabbing, and there is a bike trail that runs along the bay shore. It is also a good spot for beachcombing and wildlife watching, so keep your eyes peeled for elk, deer, seals, and plenty of birdlife.

This is also our best recommendation for a place to camp thats near Cannon Beach!

Great Destination For A Long Weekend

Great destination for a long weekend. Beautiful beaches, state parks, and a wide variety of restaurants. Under two hours from Portland and centrally located between several beach towns. We were able to visit Astoria, Manzanita and Tillamook all in the same weekend. Beach bonfires at Haystack Rock at sunset are a must!

Downtown Cannon Beach Has Fun Shops And Great Restaurants

Downtown Cannon Beach has fun shops and great restaurants. We ate at the Wayfarer Restaurant that has an amazing view of Haystack Rock. The food was delicious. Our great motel was on the beach and was right in town. We parked our car at the motel and didn’t have to worry about parking in town. Ecola State Park was next to Cannon Beach. It has spectacular views of the beach and hiking trails. We met people from all over the U.S. and they were having a great time.

Wildlife Viewing At Cannon Beach

Oregon Coast Lodging

Cannon Beach is the place to head if you are a bird-watching enthusiast. Huge colonies of seabirds flock around the offshore rocks, and birds such as Tufted Puffins can be seen at Haystack Rock. Brown Pelicans skim the surf, and if you look up, Bald Eagles sail through the skies.

The range of ecosystems here, including beaches, rocky shores, woodlands, wetlands, and estuaries, means that the variety of birdlife is extensive. Ecola Creek is another hot spot for bird watching. Bird Rocks near Chapman Point at the north end of Cannon Beach often has the greatest concentration of Common Murres.

But it is not just the birds that call the area around Cannon Beach their home. Around 18,000 Gray Whales make their migration past the shore every spring and winter, which is one of the most magical things to view if you are lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time!

There is also a chance of spotting a few other species of whale off the coast at any point throughout the year, but the gray whale is by far the most common. Seals and sea lions can sometimes also be spotted from the beach or the viewpoints, and sometimes can even be seen on the beach itself.

People also head to the area to view the herds of Roosevelt Elk, which can often be seen emerging from the edges of the surrounding rainforest to graze in the coastal meadows. Elk can most frequently be seen either in the early mornings or in the late evenings.

Best Things To Do In Cannon Beach Oregon

One of the most popular and picture-perfect places to visit and stay along Oregons coastline is the charming Cannon Beach. Surrounded by dramatic rock formations and beautiful beaches, the small seaside town lies not far from lots of sublime scenery and nature and makes for a quiet and peaceful getaway from both Portland and Salem.

Although most people come to enjoy its incredible outdoors and ample recreational opportunities, the town also has some great boutiques and art galleries for you to check out. On top of these things to do in Cannon Beach, some interesting archaeological sites can also be found dotted about. These mainly relate to the Tillahook Indians and the Lewis and Clark Expedition which passed through the area in 1805.

It is, however, the Oregon Coasts scenic shores and numerous state parks that entice most tourists to town. As well as hiking, biking and swimming along the states captivating coastline, visitors can bask in phenomenal views out over the Pacific Ocean with the humongous Haystack Rock being the areas most famous symbol and sight.

Oswald West State Park

CANNON BEACH TRAVEL GUIDE – WHERE TO STAY + EAT + VISIT

The beautiful Oswald West State Park spans four miles along the Oregon Coast. The park has it all, with miles of trails leading through the dense, temperate rainforest, breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, and secluded sandy beaches.

There are a few day-use picnic areas, and in the old-growth coastal forest, you can find some of the states largest Sitka spruces. This vast treasure is undoubtedly one of the most impressive coastal state parks in Oregon and a must on a list of things to do in Cannon Beach.

The park is popular with beachgoers, hikers, and surfers, with plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities. A 13-mile stretch of the Oregon Coast Trail winds its way through the park, extending to the town of Manzanita. The two large coastal landmarks of Cape Falcon and Neahkahnie Mountain are also located within the park and offer some great hikes.

  • Type of Trail: Out and back
  • Difficulty: Moderate

The Cape Falcon hike is undoubtedly one of the most scenic on the Oregon Coast and is a must when it comes to things to do in Cannon Beach. The cape sits in Oswald West State Park, and the trail begins at the northernmost end of the parking area, although really it can be accessed from anywhere in the park.

It is certainly an achievable hike at roughly 2 miles long one way, taking you at first through a coastal forest of Sitka spruce, with many glimpses of the Pacific Ocean through gaps in the trees.
