Deadwood, South Dakota, is a beautiful city and the seat of Lawrence County, which was established by settlers on the lands of the Lakota/Sioux tribe. The Black Hills Gold Rush brought more people here, so it eventually became a place associated with the Wild West. Also, Wyatt Earp, Calamity Jane, and Wild Bill Hickok called this city home, during the days of the Old/Wild West. Hickok was murdered here due to a poker dispute, which is why the cards he was holding at the time of his death became known as the Dead Mans Hand. With time the West has changed, including Deadwood, but the city has still preserved most of the ambiance of the Wild West. While exploring this historic city, look for budget motels or vacation rentals to provide you with comfortable lodging. Check out our recommendations for the best places to stay in Deadwood, South Dakota.

Places To Stay In Deadwood Area
We planned to travel up to the Deadwood area for 2 nights after 5 nights in Hill City in early September … 2 adult couples … any recommendations? Looks tough to find a decently priced location – nonsmoking is essential.
The Lodge at Deadwood is the only property that I’m aware of is which contains entirely non-smoking rooms.
However, there is smoking allowed on the casino floor in certain parts.
It’s the newest out there and people obviously like it, but the only drawback is that it’s not located on main street.
I believe the trolley does stop there as well and the hotel offers free shuttle service .
I would not recommend Deadwood Dicks unless you get a good price there. It’s an older building so therefore poor ventilation.
Have you tried some other properties on main street?
The Hampton Inn takes AAA/AARP and offers 10% discounts for military, etc… They are usually not booked as frequently as the other hotels on main.
You could also try the Penny Motel for a cheap place to stay, it is several blocks away and the trolley stops there as well.
Several other properties on or off main that could interest you:
Thanks for the input … the dilemma is availability for that weekend. We’ll be at the K Bar S for the balance of our trip.
Edited: 12 years ago
From the website, there are only 12 rooms, no elevator but all rooms are non-smoking…so that’s a big plus for you.
I have no idea if this is still the case…
