The Magic Factor Of Staying On

The story goes, while strolling through Disneyland one day, Walt Disney saw a Frontierland cowboy walking through Tomorrowland. Disturbed by this sight, Walt felt it ruined the Magic. When he decided to build a second park, Walt vowed that problems such as the cowboy, and view of area businesses from the Disneyland park would not occur. Walt Disney World Resort was created with this philosophy in mind. From the Utilidors running under the Magic Kingdom hiding the operations of the park to out-of-the-way access roads and invisible areas for delivery trucks, all of Walt Disney World Resort is a stage meant to immerse visitors in the magic.

Tucked amid undisturbed greenery surrounding its borders, Walt Disney World is comprised of 47 square miles of theme parks, water parks, restaurants, Disney-themed resorts, lakes, recreation, unique shopping options, spectacular entertainment, once-in-a-lifetime experiences, and sports venues meant to lock the outside world out. Some swear that the freedom from sights and sounds of everyday life does transport guests into a fully immersive experience every resort from value category to deluxe offers detailed theming. The full Disney experience from the moment you arrive on the property for your vacation to the moment you leave to return to the airport should be considered when you are deciding where to stay on your trip.

Best Overall: Disneys Riviera Resort

Disneys Riviera Resort

Disney Worlds newest hotel has luxury amenities, buzzworthy dining, and easy access to the new Skyliner gondola transportation system.

  • Two pools and a splash pad

  • Four restaurants

  • Some rooms with only Murphy beds

  • Less Disney feel

Inspired by Walt Disneys vacations to the South of France, Disneys Riviera Resort is the newest Walt Disney World hotel that opened towards the end of 2019. The hotels luxury feel starts the moment you walk into the gleaming white lobby with its view of the lake beyond and extends to the furthest corners of the resorts outdoor spaces, where youll find gorgeous inlaid murals of scenes from Disney movies like “Tangled.”But overall, the resort feels more like a luxury hotel than a Disney-themed one.

The smallest rooms are Tower Studios which feature pull-down queen Murphy beds and mini-kitchenettes, and the largest are three-bedroom suites with full kitchens and in-room washers and dryers. Three restaurants range from fine character dining at Topolinos Terrace, a rooftop restaurant that has views of the Hollywood Studios fireworks when theyre happening, to quick service at Primo Piatto and Bar Riva, the poolside bar serving small plates. By day, Le Petite Café is a coffee shop by night it becomes a cocktail lounge. Because Riviera has a Skyliner stop, this hotel has especially quick access to Epcot and Hollywood Studios on the new aerial gondola system.

When Should I Go

Before you choose where to stay, you need to determine when you are traveling. Disney resorts are least expensive during off-peak times of the year. Those times are usually when schools are traditionally in session and not around holidays. Reserving a Walt Disney World room during off-peak times can cost up to 40% less than during holidays and other busier times of the year.

Disney hotel rates vary not only by seasons but also by days of the week. Guests may pay a higher weekend rate on Friday and Saturday nights than during the rest of the week. Rooms are priced nightly so that the rate can vary nightly throughout your stay.

In addition to the overall lower prices during off-peak times, Disney is much more likely to offer special promotions during slower periods, reducing the cost of your vacation even further. Dont expect to see any special offers or promotions from Disney during the week of Easter, Thanksgiving, or Christmas through New Years Eve!

Disneys Port Orleans Resort

This resort sits squarely in the Moderate category and, in fact, has yet to reopen at all after the pandemic closure. Its big and spread out, with more than 3,000 rooms combined across the French Quarter and Riverside areas. The French Quarter theme will remind folks of New Orlean, and fans of The Princess and the Frog will enjoy seeing Tiana in some guest rooms.

These resorts originally opened in the early 1990s, and though theyve been updated since, the rooms are still on the smaller side. Port Orleans has pools on both sides of the resort and youll also find horse-drawn carriages along the river. But neither have the sorts of activities that can keep kids occupied when youre not in the parks. The restaurants here are also focused on quick service.

Some folks love the charm of Port Orleans. But for the price, wed choose a Value resort over this Moderate resort.

Best Off Site Disney World Hotels

If you are unable to find available dates on Davids website and you are looking for hotels with extra amenities, you may prefer to stay at an off-site resort at Disney World.

Off site hotels in Orlando near Disney World are often very inviting with amenities comparable to some on-property resorts at the parks. Many provide free shuttles to and from the Disney parks, and some even offer free breakfast.

For those who prefer a more traditional hotel feel or an all-suite option, there are many non Disney hotels near Disney World that fit the bill.

The best off-site Disney World hotels are those that provide spacious accommodations, elaborate outdoor pools, and shuttles to the Walt Disney World parks.

The following resorts are our top picks for best non Disney hotels in the Orlando, Florida area.

Disneys Boardwalk Inn Steeplechase Suite

Disneys Boardwalk Inn overlooks Crescent Lake, but as you stroll the quarter-mile promenade with midway games, glowing golden strung lights and historic coastal architecture, it could just as easily be the Atlantic Ocean. Disneys Boardwalk Inn perfectly embodies turn-of-the-century Atlantic City style and The Steeplechase Suite showcases that sentiment perfectly.

With plush furnishings, ornate details, marble bathrooms and an elegant-yet-inviting feel, when you step into the Steeplechase Suite, its like taking a step back in time. Its the kind of place you feel like you should show up to with a trunk or two full of gowns and jewels in tow.

The suite has two bedrooms, two-and-a-half bathrooms, a spacious open living area with tufted chairs and sofas, a dining table and a kitchenette. The furnished balcony runs the length of the suite and looks out over Crescent Lake and the entire Boardwalk area perfect for one of my favorite Disney activities, people watching.

The Grove Resort Orlando

The Grove Resort Orlando is completely removed from the theme parkswhich is exactly why we love it. After a day at the parks, retreat to the hotels Surfari Water Park and/or The Springs Pools for a swim, play a game or two at the Family Fun Center, or drop a line in the onsite lake. You might also like to enjoy a family dinner at one of the onsite restaurants or in the comfort of your suites fully equipped kitchen. Shuttle service to a nearby Disney Transportation Service is available. Fun Fact: The Grove Resort Orlando has been featured in 10 Best Florida Resorts With Water Parks.

Disney’s Art Of Animation Resort

Best Places to Stay at Disney World Fl – Silver Lake Resort Preview

Best for: Families

On-site amenities: 3 pools, playground, restaurant, pool bar

Pros: The theming here is strong, in particular in the suites and pools, which makes things even more fun for families. Another big perk of staying here is that the Disney Skyliner stops at the resort, which is a very efficient way to get around.

Cons: This hotel has limited dining and drinking establishments and the style of the hotel is geared towards children, so it may not be a fit for a couple on an adult vacation.

The Art of Animation resort, one of the more affordable, budget-friendly options within Walt Disney World resorts pays homage to the colorful characters of Disney and Pixar movies.

Themed rooms and suites are modeled after movies such as “The Little Mermaid,” “The Lion King,” “Finding Nemo,” and “Cars.” Rooms and grounds are a bit more standard and bare-bones and not as immersive or luxurious as other Disney properties. However, you’ll still enjoy prime Disney perks, especially being adjacent to the Disney Skyline, making this a good option for those who want easy access to the parks but don’t have the added budget to splurge on an expensive resort.

COVID-19 procedures are available here.

Extinct Benefits & Drawbacks

FastPass Booking Windows There has been a lot of outrage about the paid Genie+ line-skipping service, which is Walt Disney Worlds paid replacement to free FastPass+. This is particularly understandable among Deluxe Resort guests and Disney Vacation Club members, who now may be wondering what, exactly, theyre getting for the exorbitant amounts of money theyre spending to stay at Walt Disney World.

However, one key thing thats frequently overlooked is the positive impact for off-site guests. Previously, the on-site booking window for FastPass+ meant that anyone not booking ~60 days in advance got shut out of the most popular ride reservations unless they devoted significant time to constantly refreshing in search of cancellations. By the 30 day mark when off-site guests could book, all of the best options were gone that would save considerable time, leaving mostly the consolation prize FastPasses that were often pointless.

Genie+ and Lightning Lanes make it much easier to justify spending less money to stay off-site. There is no on-site advantage in booking Lightning Lane reservations via Genie+ and even the benefit for booking Individual Lightning Lanes is minimal and usually unnecessary. You can thus book off-site and reallocate the savings towards spending $16 per person on Genie+ each dayor on just Magic Kingdom and Disneys Hollywood Studios days, which is really where its most necessary and useful.
