Learn About Chattanoogas History At Chickamauga National Military Park

Chattanooga was known as the Gateway to the Deep South and played an important role during the Civil War. The Battle of Chickamauga was the site of the second deadliest battle of the Civil War and its located just over the Georgia border from Chattanooga. Older kids can appreciate the historical significance of this first National Military Park and might enjoy a visit.

We started at the Visitor Center where we watched a 25 minute video about the battle and the areas role in American history. Afterwards, we drove through the area to see the battlefields, monuments, and cabins that remain. It is quite a moving experience.

My Husband Took Me To Chattanooga For An Early Valentines

My husband took me to Chattanooga for an early Valentines weekend. This is our 3rd trip. This time we visited Rock city and loved the view from Lovers Leap. We also visited Coolidge Park which is always beautiful. We walked on the walking bridge there to see the views. Its a peaceful place and tons to do.

What Is There To Do In Lookout Mountain

Rock city is a 4100-foot garden trail that winds through natural rock formations. One of the most significant parts of the park is a lookout point where you can see up to 7 states.

1400 Patten Road, Lookout Mountain, GA

Take an elevator 26 stories down to see a cavern and the waterfall that it hides over 1,000 feet underground.

1720 South Scenic Hwy, Chattanooga, TN

The Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel is fun to visit, even if you dont stay there. We also took a cruise on a river boat. Nearby to Chattanooga is Rock City, which was a lot neater than I was expecting. We also went down into caves and saw Ruby Falls and took an incline railroad ride. We did a combo ticket for the falls, railroad, and Rock City attractions.

The railway descends Lookout Mountain with a descent that goes up to 72.7% grade. This grade is one of the steepest railway grades in the world.

The top of the railway offers a panoramic view of the surrounding areas.

    Tickets are round-trip.

This National Park is the site of a famous Civil War battle near Chattanooga that was called the Battle Above the Clouds.

    Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel

One of Chattanoogas most unique accommodations can be found at the Chattanooga Choo Choo hotel. Behind the historic Terminal Station, original Pullman cars all contain queen beds and private bathrooms. Some also have a daybed and trundle, making it perfect for a family of four. We spent a night in one of the cars and had a blast The hotel is within easy walking distance of some of our favorite restaurants and shops and the experience of sleeping in a train car absolutely thrilled our kids. We have also stayed in one of the many hotel rooms located behind Terminal Station. I was not a fan of that experience, although I do see theyve been renovated since our stay.

    Chattanooga Itself Is Stunning

Chattanooga itself is stunning. However I would strongly suggest if you are looking for a unique place to stay find somewhere different than the Chattanooga Choo Choo. Although the history of the Chattanooga Choo Choo was great the facility along with its housekeeping needs some adjustments. They do have parking on site but you do have a extra fee you have to pay for per night which is not stated at time of check in and was unexpected upon final bill at time of booking or aske would be my suggestion. Other than that Chatt is ALL around a great area!

My parents live on Lookout Mountain. A great place to stay is the Garden Walk Inn. The carousel downtown is a must . Then you must get Clumpies Ice Cream! The childrens museum is great for under 10. The aquarium is cool but lots of walking my 6 year old couldnt make it all day. . . Raccoon Mountain caves are a few minutes further but way better. They have excursions for all abilities. The towing museum is great for any toddler who loves vehicles . McKays used books is heaven for any reader and you must eat at City Cafe!
