Best Overall: Bright Angel Lodge

Bright Angel Lodge

A great value for accommodations inside the park, this historic lodge perched on the South Rim has a range of room options.

  • Variety of room categories and rates

  • Prime location

  • Fascinating history and great design

  • Direct access to trailheads

  • Some rooms could use updates

An ideal location on the edge of the South Rim and at the top of Bright Angel Trailhead, Bright Angel Lodge makes it easy for guests to step outside and see the sunrise over the canyon. The historic lodge, built by architect Mary E.J. Colter in 1935, was designed as a more affordable option to El Tovar. A Registered Historic Landmark, Bright Angel Lodge features design details like the geologic fireplace in the History Room , wood columns and rafters, and Southwestern-style wall hangings and sculptures.

Room options range from basic rooms in the main lodge to those with private bathrooms or rustic log cabinsincluding the iconic Bucky ONeill Cabin, which was originally home to one of Teddy Roosevelts Rough Riders. This variety also allows for a variety of room rates, giving travelers of various budgets access to the Grand Canyons best hotel. The main lodge has two dining options: the family-friendly Fred Harvey Burger and the more upscale Arizona Steakhouse. In the summer, a classic ice cream and soda fountain opens, plus theres a coffee shop, old-timey saloon, and gift shop. Thunderbird Lodge & Kachina Lodge

These two sister properties are adjacent to one another and are basically identical hotels. Honestly, I dont know why they gave them two different names rather than just making it one hotel with two buildings but no one asked me.

Regardless, if El Tovar is not available , this would be my next choice within Grand Canyon Village. The hotels are located right next door to El Tovar. So while they lack the charm of the historic El Tovar, they do they share the same convenient location.

The thing I like best about these two properties is that about half of the rooms actually have canyon views! Technically they are partial canyon views, as they look out onto the Rim Trail. But that is still nicer than the parking lot view we had at El Tovar.

All The Accommodation Inside The Park Is Full Where Should I Stay

There are several accommodation options in the communities near the entrances to the park. All of the nearby towns have their advantages and disadvantages, and the best place to stay will be the one that suits you the best.

Generally, West Yellowstone, MT, has the most hotel rooms and cabins while Cooke City/Silver Gate has the least. Cody and Jackson, both in Wyoming, are each about an hour away from Yellowstone, so staying there may significantly slow down your itinerary.
