Places To Stay In Greenwich Village

Why Avoid Lower East Side

NYC GUIDE: Greenwich Village, Manhattan – 5 AMAZING Places to Visit !

The transport links here arent great so if this is your first time in the city and youre hoping to see lots of the main tourist sights then this may be a bit of an awkward location. Its quite busy and crowded here and theres not a huge range of accommodation. It also generally looks run down and is quite residential in parts so it may not have the New York bright lights vibe many are looking for.

Getting Around New York

  • Take the subway. Its faster! You can purchase a MetroCard at any station as an individual ride card or a 7-day or 30-day unlimited card.
  • Download the Citimapper app to tell you the fastest ways to travel throughout the city.
  • Avoid empty subway cars! Its too good to be true. Usually, the AC is broken or there is a terrible smell.
  • New York is a walking city but pace yourself, make sure to stay hydrated and give yourself enough time to rest.
  • Dont stop suddenly in the middle of a busy sidewalk. Walk to the sides before stopping, and make sure to look behind you before you stop short.
  • Get the Curb Taxi App or use Uber or Lyft: Note from Deb and Dave: Taxis and Ubers in NYC are very reasonable and make it easy to get around.
  • Regardless of whether you are planning a trip to see the many art galleries and museums or take in the popular attractions like the Rockefeller Center and the Statue of Liberty, New York has a great mix of different neighborhoods that appeal to every type of traveler.

I hope this guide to New York accommodation helps make your next vacation planning a little easier. We have covered everything we feel you need to know. From the layout of the city to our hand-picked personal recommendations for hotels in both Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Upper West Side Where To Stay In New York City For Families

The Upper West Side is a wonderful Manhattan neighborhood to stay in for families and couples. We recently returned from New York and stayed at the historicHotel The Beacon in this area and loved it. It is not as hectic as some of the other areas but still close to cool things like Central Park, Lincoln Center, American Museum of Natural History, and Riverside Park .

    Pros of Staying in

    • Far from The Lower East Side, financial district, and Brooklyn.
    • Not the most interesting people watching
    • Hotels are quite expensive.

The hotels are more affordable, the trains are good and reliable, and the area while still vibrant is not packed with people. If you are looking for where to stay in New York City that is family-friendly this is where you will want to stay. It gives you easy access to the subway lines and some great eats as well.

    Reputation As Urban Bohemia

Greenwich Village historically was known as an important landmark on the map of American bohemian culture in the early and mid-20th century. The neighborhood was known for its colorful, artistic residents and the alternative culture they propagated. Due in part to the progressive attitudes of many of its residents, the Village was a focal point of new movements and ideas, whether political, artistic, or cultural. This tradition as an enclave of avant-garde and alternative culture was established during the 19th century and continued into the 20th century, when small presses, art galleries, and experimental theater thrived. In 1969, enraged members of the gay community, in search for equality, started the Stonewall riots. The Stonewall Inn was later recognized as a National Historic Landmark for having been the location where the gay rights movement originated.

On January 8, 1947, stevedore Andy Hintz was fatally shot by hitmen John M. Dunn, Andrew Sheridan and Danny Gentile in front of his apartment. Before he died on January 29, he told his wife that “Johnny Dunn shot me.” The three gunmen were immediately arrested. Sheridan and Dunn were executed.

    Walk Along Bleecker Street

Any visit to NYCs Greenwich Village must include a walk along Bleecker Street. Not only is this one of the most popular areas in Greenwich Village, but its also one of the more famous streets in all of New York City.

Back when the area was mostly farmland, the Bleecker family owned a farm that had a road that ran right through the land. That road would ultimately be given to the city and forever named Bleecker Street.

Today, things are a bit different along Bleecker Street. Across several blocks, youll find the Village vibe in the restaurants, cafes, nightclubs, live music, and shopping along Bleecker Street.

The food scene on Bleecker Street has an incredibly rich history. In the late 1800s, there were just a couple of thousand Italians in all of New York City. By the early 1900s, over half the people living in Greenwich Village were Italians.

Restaurants, cafes, bakeries, and butcher shops owned by Italians opened around Greenwich Village and dominated most of Bleecker Street.

Much of this influence is still felt today. Johns Pizza was established in 1929 and Ottomanelli and Sons Butcher Shop opened in 1900. As a first-generation Italian, this is a block that feels like home!

This Lower Manhattan itinerary guide has more about which stops to make for your own DIY food tour.

Bleecker Street also has a legendary music scene. Simon & Garfunkel , Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, & many more performed in the smoky venues along Bleecker Street.
