Harbour Island Is Classy And Relaxed
Harbour Island is classy and relaxed. It just silly to allow horse back riding on the beach when everybody is on the beach. Horses dump their poo on the beach and in the water next to people while their are swimming. To make 2 people + the organizer happy they disappoint hundreds. Shame on the Toursim Authority
Where Should We Hang Out For A Drink
When the restaurants close for the night, people head to the island bars. The hotel staff is local so when they finish their day they join you at the bar. I’ve been known to enjoy a Goombay Smash at Beyond the Reef or Gusty’s Bar with its sandy floor and dated playlist. After Gustys we usually head to Daddys Ds for great music and dancing . The local beer is Kalik and the only way Kalik gets off the island is in tourists luggage so try to enjoy it while youre there.
I think they have been playing the same soundtrack at Gustys for 17 years, but its oddly comforting.

Whats The Cant Miss Item On Your Itinerary
The Lone Tree, as its called, is the iconic piece of drift wood that sits off the coast on the northwestern side of the island . The original lone tree arrived upright during high tide almost 30 years ago and, although the original one is gone, a new tree is in its place and you really must make time for a photo op. Weve done it for years and years, and over time its become a lovely tradition to watch our family grow and document visitors whove joined us on the island.
What Should We Bring With Us
Cash! While the hotels restaurants and shoppes accept major credit cards, most of the local food spots such as Queen Conch only accept cash. Make note that things on Harbour Island are expensive. Even the sunscreen is expensive so bring extra in your luggage if you have the space. If you have to purchase something on the island just know youre going to pay a little more.
As far as packing goes, its easy breezy there. Day can often turn into night and flip flops and a sundress will totally work for dinner. You might see men in a seersucker suit or blazer to fancy it up a bit, but its not required. I always bring several cover-ups, a few great swimsuits and my favorite hat. I love and Wiggy Kit and both designers have homes on the island. Minnow Swim and Stella Cove are my favorites for kids’ suits and J. Crew really does a wonderful job with kids swimwear that lasts. Two final must haves Aquaphor SPF 30 for everyones lip protection, and I wear SPF powder from Super Goop! daily. I throw in my bag for touch-ups at the beach. It doesnt have color so its just nice to reapply all day.
Sometimes I use a beach bag as my carry-on. I shove a swimsuit and a coverup inside. Even if my luggage is lost Im covered and lets be honest thats all you really need anyway.

Where Should We Shop
The island hosts several high-end boutiques, most notably The Sugar Mill which offers clothing, jewelry and collectibles. Dake’s Shoppe is another darling boutique and I love browsing their jewelry, housewares and clothing. Coral Sands has a gift shop that sells swimwear and flip flops and I love to pop into Miss Mae’s, the Blue Rooster and Dilly Dally! too. While there are so many cute shops, my favorite place to buy a souvenir is at a roadside stand called A& A Hidden Treasures. They have monogrammed totes and straw hats and clutches and can even make you a custom lampshade or basket. Miss Alice will make whatever you want, just give her a couple of days.
What Not To Miss
I used to think of Eleuthera as this very laid back sleepy island without much to see or do other than visit the beautiful beaches and quaint settlements, but my opinion has changed considerably over the years as Ive learned more and more about the island. Eleuthera has an adventurous side that attracts all sorts of thrill seekers. That might be what attracted me in the first place although I convinced myself it was the peace and solitude. Regardless of what your personal preference is you can find both laid back and adventurous here.
Want to have a new beautiful beach to yourself every day? Yup, got that! Want to scuba dive, surf, snorkel in a cenote, feed swimming pigs, go deep sea fishing, explore a bat cave or jump off a cliff? Yup, we got that, too! What we dont have a lot of are some of the more artificial touristy type experiences that you might find in other beach destinations such as jet skis, parasailing, wind surfing, booze cruises, water parks or ATVs. Picture your Eleuthera vacation as the perfect beach / ocean vacation without the use of gas engines except for those found on the boats of the fishermen and adventure tour guides. Also, be aware that you wont find casinos or much nightlife save for the weekly fish fry in Governors Harbour, which is currently suspended due to Covid.

Felt Like Staying In A Private Residence
This was a bucket list trip for my wife and we decided on Rock House. From the pre-arrival arrangements, genuine welcome, and ambiance, we were not disappointed. All of the staff were wonderful. There are only ten rooms and we stayed in the Palm. Wonderful mornings on the patio and incredible sunsets.
The staff makes this hotel a winner. We felt like we were guests in a beautiful home rather than a hotel. We enjoyed staying in town and having access to the gorgeous Pink Sand Beach. We loved the Pineapple Room, which had its own private terrace. Cant really add to the other reviewsthey are all true!
My husband and I stayed here for 5 nights and enjoyed every minute! The staff was incredible. They arranged golf carts, made sure we knew our way around and gave advice on what to see and what to do on Harbour Island. We felt at home and pampered, every need seen to, every aspect of our stay comfortable.

The tours are negotiable for a little walk alongside Marty, the local guy you’ll see walking the horses to and from the stables each day. If you want to go for a ride, head to the makeshift horse pen next to The Coral Sands. This is where you will need to go to put your name on the list.
The whole family likes to visit Ramora Bay Resort and Marina for local entertainment. They offer live music several nights a week and its a great place to stop by for a cocktail at sunset. The kids stay entertained at the dock where they watch the fishermen clean their catch of the day. They throw the scraps into the water beneath the cleaning station which brings the sharks and sting rays in for an easy meal.

The Dunmore Beach Hotel
This property is an all time favorite of ours and considered our home away from home when we are on the island. It has a relaxed and charming atmosphere. The staff is welcoming, they serve great cocktails with local rum and a make a delicious conch ceviche. The Dunmore offers several ocean front villas peppered along the beach, as well as two cottages on the bay side of the island where the water can be calmer and a little less windy. The last couple of years its been our preference to stay in the Bayside Cottages. The cottages are known as the Low & High Tide Cottages, and labeled on the map as Point 14. They have a kitchen, share a pool and pool house, and provide views of the yachts in the bay from their expansive decks.

Its An Adventure Getting There
Its an adventure getting there. You fly into the little North Aluthera airport, take a “taxi” to the harbor, then take a water taxi to harbor island. Then you can either walk, take another taxi, or rent a golf cart to the hotel.There is a nice variety of low and high end restaurants, all within walking or golf cart ride distance from the hotels.Beaches are fantastic.You can go back to eluthera island a rent a car for the day and check out the bigger island.
