Where To Stay In Homer
One of the top vacation destinations in the state, this city is home to natural beauty, fine arts, and world-class fishing.
Located at the end of the Kenai Peninsula, Homer is the halibut fishing capital of the world. Because of this, many tourists come to try their luck at reeling in one of the monster-sized fish.
In addition to fishing, Homer is a premier spot for bear viewing, kayaking, and flightseeing.
The Homer Spit, partially pictured above, is lined with the cutest fishing shacks, restaurants, ice cream shops, stores, and more!
Its such a charming town, I highly recommend visiting! Even though it rained almost the whole time we were in Homer, it didnt detract from its charm!
Best Hotels In Juneau
I stayed the week at the Alaskan Hotel, built in 1913 during Alaskas Gold Rush. The Alaskan Hotel is the oldest in Juneau and is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites.
The Victorian architecture has wooden floors, high ceilings, stained glass, and lovely vintage furniture. Do be sure to stop in for a drink at the bar. With live music and entertainment, the bar is a throwback to Juneaus mining days. Taste the Alaskan Amber Ale, brewed locally and delicious. Look behind the bar for one of Wyatt Earps pistols.
You might be interested in the book The Life and Times of The Alaskan Hotel by Joshua Adams. The history is quite impressive!
Note: The hotel has no elevators, so it may not be appropriate for all.
Another option is Jorgensen Bed and Breakfast, a luxurious bed and breakfast in a historical setting. Just a 10-minute walk from downtown Juneau, the home was initially built at the Klondike Gold Rush height in 1915. Extensively remodeled, the house retains the original artifacts, photos, and original artwork. The four-course breakfasts are a highlight.
With all the choices listed above, you will find it challenging to do the city justice in a long weekend. I am sure you will want to return for a second visit.

The view offered by the location is breathtaking: ships and cruisers arriving and departing in the Gastineau Channel in the summer, combined with a splendid background of forests and hills year round. Visitors appreciate the service as being excellent, and the staff professional. Located within walking distance from our hotel in Juneau, this restaurant should be a must do on your list.
Helicopter Flight With Dog Sledding On Glacier
We were actually supposed to do this but unfortunately, our trip was canceled due to weather. Insert sad face here.
This adventure involves a helicopter ride onto the Mendenhall Glacier and a chance to learn how to run sled dogs. Its classic Alaska and probably something you shouldnt miss if the weather cooperates.

For A Luxury Stay: Stone Lantern House
If youre looking for more of a luxurious stay and are willing to splurge, Stone Lantern House is my top choice for you.
The floor-to-ceiling windows offer a stunning view of the nearby dormant volcano! If you scroll through the photos on their AirBNB link, youll see just what I mean!
Furthermore, it features an open concept designed to immerse guests in the Alaskan wilderness. The Japanese influences in the design of the home are evident in the Tea Room and tranquil bedrooms.
To sum it up, this house is a showstopper.

Nugget Falls Near Mendenhall Glacier
This attraction in Juneau is one of the most popular hikes due to its accessibility and views of not only a towering waterfall but the Mendenhall Glacier.
The accessibility to Nugget Falls is very easy, so it wont be the most secluded place you visit in Juneau, but will prove worth the effort nonetheless.
My Pick: Borealis Basecamp

Located just 25 miles from Fairbanks, Borealis Basecamp is so much more than just lodging. It does come at a higher price point than the other places on this list, but it is worth it!
The basecamp is set on over 100 acres of boreal forest, offering a close-up view of the Alaskan wilderness. Its also the only glass-roofed igloo lodging in Alaska!
Staying in one of the Borealis Basecamp igloos is an experience unlike any other, with luxurious interiors and clear ceilings that highlight the Arctic sky.
Additionally, the basecamp offers daily dogsledding and snowshoeing tours to give guests the full Alaska experience!
Since it was summer when we visited, we went dog carting and ATVing. It was so much fun!

At SALT, enjoy the seared halibut paired with white wine.
Stop at , the food truck close to the Alaskan Hotel, to sample the fish tacos. Locals suggest that one cannot go to Juneau without eating at Deckhand Daves. I returned my last afternoon in Juneau, and as I was waiting in line, a woman approached me and asked if I was by myself. When I replied yes, she invited me to join her and her friend. What great Alaskan hospitality! I enjoyed their company. Thanks, Donna and June!
I had the pleasure of meeting and tasting the culinary delicacies of Chef Amara and Brava Food. Chef Amara catered the delicious lunch on the Salmon Without Borders trip. I sent her my compliments, and she responded with the offer to host me for lunch the next day. Chef Amara has a Cooking Studio on-site for lessons and intimate dinner parties and also offers take-out lunches. All ingredients are locally sourced, and all the greens are grown on the property.

I would recommend this hotel for travellers who value personalized service and out-of-croud experience. Hotel itself is very cosy and stylish – private house, walking distance from city center and the most important have owners who cares about their guests. We have experienced very warm welcome arriving rather late at night, deep inside of Alaska and really very customised service approuch based on our specific needs. Coming from Europe and visiting Alaska for the first time – I should say that this was something unforgotable and I would really suggest this hotel for those travellers who value VIP approuch.

Visit Glacier Bay National Park
A visit to Juneau puts you into close proximity to one of the most beautiful and remote national parks in the USA, Glacier Bay National Park. So if you have the time to visit, you certainly should.
You can go about this in two ways, either book a day trip that will give you a very basic overview including the visitors center and a cruise into the bay itself, or plan to stay a few nights within the park.
Honestly, there is no right way to do it. That said, you have the option to either camp or stay in a lodge within the park. So staying a night or two is definitely an option.
If youre short on time, you can book a tour that departs out of Juneau, like this one, and spend the day in one of the most spectacular places in the world.
My Pick: 4 Seas Cottage
This charming apartment is fully furnished and boasts panoramic ocean views. Both the beach and the city center are just a short walk away, making this the ideal location.
Additionally, 4 Seas Cottage was built in 2019, so all the amenities are contemporary and brand new.
This would definitely be my budget-friendly option of choice. Its one of the prettiest budget-friendly places in all of Sitka!

For Hot Springs: Chena Hot Springs Resort
If you love hot springs, you can actually stay at the Chena Hot Springs Resort!
This has a way more touristy vibe than Borealis Basecamp, so its not the place for me, but it definitely draws hot spring lovers!
The Chena Hot Springs Resort combines an RV park, hotel, hot spring, ice museum, and more all into one. Its huge, so you wont get that catered attention that youd get elsewhere.
But with free access to the hot springs, I can definitely see its draw, so I knew I had to include it on this list!
Bear Viewing On Admiralty Island
Taking a floatplane from downtown Juneau, this 30-minute trip will land you in what the Tlingit people called the fortress of bears. The Pack Creek Sanctuary is the best place to view Brown Bears in Southeast Alaska.
If you want to see bears here, plan your trip between June and September. Book a bear viewing trip to Admiralty Island

My Pick: Resurrection Lodge On The Bay
Located just 3 miles from the city, Resurrection Lodge is an amazing place to wind down. Guests can enjoy a hot breakfast buffet and relax on the deck while taking in the majestic wildlife.
One of my favorite things about Resurrection Lodge is the incredible views of Resurrection Bay. In May and June, there are constantly humpback whales diving in the fjord- you can watch directly from the porch!
There is also a wonderful, friendly atmosphere. You can easily get to know other guests out by the covered porch by the kitchen. And the Adirondack chairs that sit in a row with views of the beach just add to the charm!
We had a rental car, but Resurrection Lodge also offers a shuttle service to get to and from town, making it a breeze to get around.
Hike The West Glacier Trail

If you want to get into the thick of Southeast Alaskas temperate rainforests, then this trail is for you. I have never seen such a dense amount of forest moss in my life, it was incredible.
This hike follows the forest up the west side of the Mendenhall Glacier and, if youre up for it, will end at a spectacular overlook of the glacier and lake below.
Not everyone will be fit enough to reach the viewpoint, it does require good fitness and the ability to walk up steep areas with uneven ground. However, if this doesnt suit you dont let that deter you.
The first part of the hike is relatively easy and still allows you to immerse yourself in the forest.
We went out with the guides at Adventure Flow and not only did we get a great hike but we learned so much about the forest along the way.
The unique eco-system of the rainforest is a passion for the guides and they overflow with excitement in showing you the many layers of the forest.
If you love nature, this is one of the best things in Juneau to get away from the crowds and check out the rainforest.
