Kaanapali Where To Stay In Maui For The First Time
Located in West Maui this town is a top choice for everyone who is visiting for the first time. Ka Anapali beach is known for its three-mile-long stretch of pristine white sand and crystal-clear waters, it was considered at one point the best beach in the United States of America, a place frequently visited by the royalties. I would highly recommend booking in advance as this place is a top travel choice for every person who wants to stay in Maui.
This west side town is a perfect place if you want to mix both city and beach vibes, Kaanapali has tons of restaurants and a shopping center. Royal Ka Anapali and the Kaanapali Kai are two great places if youre a fan of golf, you can even see a whale from the playing field. Golfing is a popular sport here, and who wouldnt love it since you have the perfect weather and most beautiful views.
Make sure you visit the famous Black Rock, a favorite cliff jumping site, on the Ka Anapali beach, for both locals and visitors. During wintertime many humpback whales flock to the waters of Kaanapali so whale watching can get pretty exciting during this time.
Where To Stay In Central Maui
Youll likely crisscross Central Maui on your way to the airport and back from beaches in West and South Maui at a minimum. This is the middle of the island between the famous west coast and Hana Highway. Close to the airport with easy access everywhere.
But be sure to visit lush Iao Valley State Park here as well. The state park, just at the base of the West Maui Mountains, offers 400 acres of lush valley for hiking and the opportunity to ogle the famous Iao Needle, a particularly striking and thin mountain peak rising out of the valley here.
Cute little Wailuku is where Mauis county government is based. Youll fall in love with the adorable boutiques and mom and pop establishments that have been here for generations. Kahului is, of course, home to Mauis main airport, but also hosts a swap meet, the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, and the Maui Sunday market.
Pros and cons: If you can stay near the Iao Valley, this is an idyllic location for a base on Maui. You can conveniently access just about anywhere on island. Wailuku feels cozy. And budget travelers will enjoy the hostel scene here.
While Kahului is not a popular base for most visitors to Maui, it does make a great spot if youre looking to minimize drive time to spend more time on the Road to Hana or Mount Haleakala or need to be close to the airport for a flight.
On the other hand, this is not near any swimming beaches. Its more of an industrial area.

1. Hawaiian Dream Temple
Where To Stay In South Maui
South Maui is popular for a reason! First of all, its the driest and sunniest area of Maui.
It will take you just a half hour or so from the airport to reach Kihei, with miles and miles of beautiful sandy beaches for swimming and surfing. Lots of families congregate here due to the easy beach access from the many condos and hotels just opposite Kamaole Beaches I, II, and III.
Youll also find plenty of food trucks in this area and roadside malls selling bikinis and beach essentials.
A bit further south is Wailea, named after the goddess of canoe builders . Fancy waterside resorts abound here. Even if you dont stay, be sure to stop for sunset cocktails or a meal at the Andaz Maui Wailea Resort or the Grand Wailea Maui.
Pros and cons: South Maui is sunny, laid back, and theres great shopping. Plenty of great day tours depart from here.
On the flip side, the consistently sunny days and gorgeous beaches mean plenty of other tourists. Its also not as lush as the other side of the island if youre looking for lush jungle hikes.

Where To Stay In Kihei
Kohea Kai Maui is a great mid-range option in Kihei featuring a free breakfast, swimming pool, and rooftop deck.
The Maui Coast Hotel is another great mid-range option that sits directly across from Kamaole Beach Park, and is home to nightly entertainment, tennis courts, and a free shuttle service around Kihei and Wailea.
Place To Stay Near Kahului Airport
We are arriving late, 7:30 p.m., on a Saturday night at the Kahului airport. I booked us one night at the Maui Seaside just a one-night place to lay our heads before moving on to the other hotels in our trip. Not so thrilled about the mixed reviews on Maui Seaside, so I’m looking at Paia accomodations.
My question is: is Paia close to and easy to get to from the airport? Driving at night along the Hana Highway–is it windy and curvy on the way to Paia and not advisable for tourists who do not know the area?
My next question: any suggestions for decent places to stay in Paia for one night for a family of four? Many have multiple-night minimums or 2 person-occupancies.

While the road to Paia is a pretty straight shot – at that point it is not curvy at all- there are no hotels or anything similar there. If you are just crashing for the night after a late flight getting in,, the Maui Seaside should be fine.
Thanks, glad to know the road is drivable in the dark. I know there are no hotels, but there are B& Bs and cottage rentals.

Staying Along The Hana Highway

The Eastside of Maui is definitely the most remote side of the island. Its here youll find the famous Hana Highway .
While debatably the most scenic part of Maui, youll find accommodations few and far between here, mostly with options limited to small B& Bs and Inns along the highway.
There are several good shops available along the coast here, especially in Paia.
East Maui Highlights
Its about 53 miles to Hana town from Kahului Airport , and the drive takes about 2 – 2.5 hours. While most visitors will drive the Road to Hana in and back out on the same day, there are options for those looking to stay in Hana too.
For visitors who are staying the night in Hana, we highly recommend Hana Kai Maui, or if youre looking for more upscale accommodations, then consider Travaasa Hana.
East Maui Caveats
The main downside to staying in East Maui is that beyond exploring the Hana Highway, theres almost literally nothing to do here. It is also wetter and rainier along this stretch of the island, so be prepared for rain if you do stay here.

We chose a very busy time to travel to Maui but the price for this 3.5 star bordered on obscene. It’s a fantastic original 60’s building with abundant opportunity to make smart, groovy, stylish, yet affordable accomm for seasoned travellers. However, it looks like a daggy old motel that ran out of paint. Many guests were gutted by the overall quality for the price – you only had to take one look at the rug in the foyer. The location by the sea was great, the port and the road – not so great , but the gardens were charming. The air-con units were loud and clunky so we turned ours off and enjoyed the sea breeze. Beds ok, linen cheap and nasty, shower fabulous. Luckily for the greedy, tasteless owners of this hotel, the delightfully friendly staff went out of their way to assist guests with genuine care and attention, without prejudice and should be appropriately showered with thanks and praise.
