Royal Coconut Coast Beach Highlights
Anahola Beach Park
Anahola is just plain perfect for families, especially those with smaller children, as it has some of the calmest waters on the island. High surf is kept at bay by a protective reef. The center section has a no-board rule so surfing is allowed on the north side of the beach only. And though snorkeling is relatively calm here, the waters near the mouth of the Anahola River can get rough. The grassy park is tree-lined for shade making it great for picnics, and it provides one of the only overnight campgrounds on this side of the island.
Lydgate Beach and Park
Children are in heaven at Lydgate Beach and Park. Break walls were built to create two pools that are as calm and warm as an oversized tub and are a pleasure for parents, too. The larger pool is full of fish perfect for little snorkelers and the smaller pool is the go-to spot for infants and toddlers. The rolling grassy area is filled with trees, barbecues and picnic tables, and an enormous deluxe playground nearby provides plenty of shade. A true family-friendly beach and park that includes a lifeguard service, your kids may never want to leave.

South Shore Beach Highlights
Who loves Poipu Beach? Water sports enthusiasts, families with little children, beach-chair dreamers, adventure seekers and plenty of lazy monk seals. In fact Poipu , was dubbed the best beach in America by the Travel Channel partially for its curved, lush beauty but also for its rare tombolo. What the heck is a tombolo, you ask? It is a naturally occurring sandbar that in this case splits the waters here into two smaller bays. To the west is Baby Beach, so called because it is a protected cozy cove perfect for even the youngest children like a gigantic bathtub. On the other side youll find a sports-lovers haven with great snorkeling and fun waves. All this is banked by a grassy park dotted with coconut palms, and includes showers, restrooms, picnic tables, nearby restaurants and easy parking. If youre not staying at a Kauai beachfront resort, you can enjoy the best of the South Shore all day here.
Though this idyllic, golden-sand beach stretches along the Kiahuna Plantation condominiums, it is open to the public. Rough waters make this a better spot for experienced swimmers, though it is calmer inside the reef. A favorite beach for beginning surfers, you may, too, want to take a lesson here but be aware of occasional and dangerous sneaker waves that can come out of nowhere, crashing down with great power and possibly even tossing you onto the rocks. Park at Poipu Beach and walk over as parking here is scarce for non-residents.

Kilauea Best Neighborhood In Kauai For Families
Kilauea is on the North Shore and offers unparalleled natural scenery, which makes it a great choice when youre deciding where to stay in Kauai for your first time. In fact, the whole North Shore is filled with awe-inspiring waterfalls, towering mountain ranges, and lush tropical rainforest.

The town of Kilauea itself is charmingly rustic, filled with tropical fruit stands, and stone houses. And its rolling cliffs hide the homes of celebrities like Bette Midler and Sylvester Stallone.
Kilauea is one of Kauais best neighborhoods if youre looking for local charm. It has plenty of historic and cultural attractions as well as budget and luxury accommodation. And there are plenty of popular restaurants in the area, so youll be spoiled for choice when it comes to your meals!
Staying On The North Shore
Including Princeville, Hanalei, and Kilauea
The North Shore of Kauai may be one of the most scenic places on the entire planet. There are a variety of gorgeous beaches and the verdant mountains rising as a backdrop to the coastline make this entire stretch of the island seem like the real Hawaii youve envisioned before visiting. Its lush here because rainfall is higher than in other locations on the island, especially during the ‘winter’ months when the tradewinds pick up, so keep that in mind if youre opposed to more frequent rainfall during your visit.
Along the North Shore, youll find Princeville, where the majority of the North Shore luxury accommodations are located. Just beyond Princeville, youll discover the small surfing town of Hanalei, with its bustling shops and a variety of small restaurants.
The accommodations in this area are pretty luxurious and may just be some of the nicest on the island, but that luxury also comes with a higher price tag. The North Shore is also more secluded from the remainder of the island, which is something to additionally consider if you plan to do a lot of exploring on Kauai while youre visiting.
- Rain- especially during the winter months

Best Kauai Honeymoon Resorts
Hawaii is one of the top honeymoon destinations in the world and for good reasonits tropical, it has all of the amenities and activities you could want, and its relatively easy to get to for being on the other side of the world. Kauai is popular with honeymooners because of its laid back vibe and secluded nature.
Heres my biggest tip for planning the best honeymoonpick the right time of year to go. Hawaii is an extremely family friendly vacation destination so when kids are out of school, expect even the swankiest resorts to have a pool full of kids. While a lot of places have adults only pools, kids are always around everywhere else you go, so if youre looking for a quieter time to go, pick spring or fall . Im not telling you this to make you think Hawaii isnt the perfect honeymoon destination , but many people mistakenly believe that by staying at a super expensive beach resort theyll limit the kids around, but thats not necessarily the case. When you go has more to do with it than where you stay.
As far as favorite Kauai resorts for honeymooners, my recommendations tend towards luxury. Heads up: I rank Kauai dead last in terms of luxury resorts in Hawaii. There are a couple of nice ones , but overall if the perfect resort experience is whats going to make or break your honeymoonI would personally head over to Maui or the Big Island instead. But heres what I do recommend:
A Few Kauai Hawaii Resort Highlights On The North Shore
The Princeville Resort
Like the aging grand duchess of the Kauai luxury resorts kingdom, the lavish and massive Princeville Resort perches high on a cliff gazing out over Hanalei Bay. A true bucket-list destination, the Princeville is considered to be in one of the most spectacular locations on this or any other island, as it was built specifically to provide every guest room with breathtaking views of the vast sparkling Pacific, mountain ranges and unforgettable North Shore sunsets. In fact, this is the only Kauai resort that provides views of the towering emerald cliffs of the Napali coast one of the worlds unique natural treasures. Conde Nast readers named the Princeville Resort as one of the 25 Best Overall Kauai Hawaii Resorts for 2018.
A relative newcomer to the North Shore, the gorgeous 10-year-old Westin Kauai resort enjoys many Princeville-adjacent amenities without the crazy-high price tag of its grander neighbor. And though some balk at its lack of beachfront access, a complimentary shuttle whisks guests to and from the Princeville Resorts golden shores all day long. And what the Westin does not have in the way of sand, it makes up for with fantastic multiple pools and a breath-taking high-cliff view over Hanalei Bay and Mount Makana. Whale watching in your own backyard, anyone?

The Cliffs At Princeville
Like other Princeville resorts, youre not on the beach here, but the Cliffs a mix of 202 timeshare and vacation rental condos in eight three-story buildings is unique in providing so many facilities perfect for group activities. Besides the lagoon-style swimming pool and two whirlpools on its 22 acres, the Cliffs offers two tennis courts, pickleball, bicycle rentals, a mini putting green, kids playground, fitness center and a half-court basketball court most equipment is complimentary.
One-bedroom units are a roomy 917 square feet, and sleep four two-bedroom units add a 314-square-foot loft with double beds Ceiling and portable fans help trade breezes cool the condos, which are not air-conditioned all have full kitchens, washer-dryers and two spacious lanais
- The Cliffs feels secluded, but its also close to the numerous activities offered by Princeville Ranch and Hanalei outfitters the onsite concierge can help craft an ideal itinerary for your gang.
Casual and fine dining and groceries are also close at hand in Princeville and Hanalei.

What Do I Need To Know Before Going To Kauai
So Ultimately Where Is The Best Place To Stay In Kauai
Any kind of singular recommendation is going to be biased but I still think that staying in the North Shore and in the Princeville area is the best place to be.
My argument is that you’d most likely only go to the Waimea Canyon on the West Side once on your trip and while South Shore is nice, I still prefer the hidden local beaches in the north.
There’s a real comfortable charm and alluring paradise to being in Princeville, and seeing the start of the Napali Coast that has had me back twice already.

How To Get Around
- Car Exploring the island by rental car is your best bet. To make sure you get the best deal, make sure you use one of these codes. Like the rest of Hawaii, you’ll have your choice of standard cars but you also have large fleets of convertibles and jeeps.
- Bus If you’re on a budget and looking to get around Kauai by bus, there is a public bus system that takes you to major parts of the island. The fares are $2 USD per trip. In most cases, buses only come once an hour so you do have to be mindful of the schedule.
- Tour If you’d rather join a tour, take a look at this Best of Kauai Tour.
- Airport Transfer and private transfers from the Kauai airport.
Is It Better To Stay On The North Or South Side Of Kauai
1000% honestly here. Kauai is the island I struggle the most with where to stay. For me, the place I stay can really make or break the trip and theres not one place that I just absolutely love on this island .
If were talking north shore vs south shore, the north shore is 100% the most beautiful part of Kauai and in my opinion what you go to Kauai for. Buuuuut it can rain a lot and theres not a ton of places to stay up there. Ive got my fingers crossed that when the Princeville Resort reopens it will blow me away and become my go to place to stay on Kauai. So that makes the only problem the rain. If its during summer , I definitely like to stay on the north shore. In the winter, its more of a gamble.
Heres the other downside of staying on the north shoresince their historic flooding in 2018, accessing the town of Hanalei and the road beyond has pretty much been a mess. After being shut down for almost 18 months , the road washed out again earlier this year and is now barely accessible . Unfortunately the massive amounts of rain in this area are just par for the course and ongoing problems with infrastructure are a consequence.
Well thats a pretty long diatribe about staying on the north shore. Now you get why I said its not a perfect place to stay. Even though its probably the best. Figure that one out haha.
So onto the south side
