Places To Stay In Kihei Hawaii

Kihei Is A Great Little Town To Stay In

Where to stay on Maui, Hawaii | Kihei VRBO Tour | Kayla Limage

Kihei is a great little town to stay in. Its relatively easy to get to all the major attractions on the island. Its quiet and peaceful. There are some wonderful restaurants like Mooses, Pennys, The Dog and Duck Irish Pub, and many more. If you are planning to have an extended stay, there are several grocery stores close by. I would recommend staying in this area. The only downside is the wind can be strong, but its not all the time.

Where To Stay In Upcountry

This is rural Maui, also in the middle of the island, just south of Central Maui. While its not a typical tourist choice for a base, youll meet more locals than tourists with easy access everywhere.

Upcountry Maui is locals Maui away from the beaches. In fact, Hawaiians have been farming taro and sweet potatoes in this fertile heartland of green rolling hills and drifting fog for generations.

Youll inevitably pass through here on your way to Haleakala even if you dont stay here as you pass rural outposts and goat farms. Upcountry is more than just a place its a way of life.

Pros and cons: Stay in upcountry if youre looking for a peaceful, authentic Maui experience. Skip it if youre interested in nightlife. The weather can also be cooler here .

Here are my picks for Upcountry:

1. Coast to Coast Views in Kula

Nestled on the slopes of Haleakala, the Haleakala Princess Estate is a unique property with sweeping views of both coasts! Its possibly the best view on island. Youll be wandering 3.5 acres of native Hawaiian gardens here and lounging in special outdoor nooks and watching the sunset around the gas fire pit or hot tub. A huge tile deck wraps around the whole house.

Best for: Groups of up to six people as both a main house and cottage are included.

2. Modern Cottage in Historic Wailuku

Best for: A couple or solo traveler on a budget.

North Kihei Best Place To Stay In Kihei On A Budget

Hawaii isnt the cheapest destination, but budget travellers can rest easy in North Kihei. Its also a top location for nature lovers, with fewer hotels and a more residential feel. The jewel of North Kihei is Sugar Beach the longest in the area and the perfect spot for long walks.

Despite the quiet nature of this area, theres plenty of adventure to be had and beauty to be observed. Its well-worth checking out while you decide where to stay in Kihei, and is a great place to visit even if you stay elsewhere.

For something more mid-range, check out Kaanapali Beach Hotel. The hotel is located among tropical gardens, and has tons of activities for guests to try.

For a luxury stay, I personally recommend the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa. The property is right at the foot of Black Rock, has the cutest rooms, and features an area shuttle service.

Mai Poina Oe Lau Beach Park

Mai Poina Oe lau Beach Park is a very spacious beach with strong winds and large waves that allow visitors to enjoy surfing all year round. Many visitors also enjoy taking long morning walks or watching the gorgeous sunset.

Despite its popularity, its always free from crowds. Essentially, its not as noisy as other Hawaiian beaches. It has no lifeguards and is an extension of Sugar Beach.

There are restrooms, showers, and picnic tables, as well as a grassy park. Be aware, however, that the beach can get rather windy in the afternoon.

Many condominiums are within walking distance from the beach, so you can have a comfortable place to stay in the meantime.

Lahaina Where To Stay In Maui For Your First Time

Lahaina is our top recommendation for where to stay in Maui for your first time.

It is a lively town with a rich history. It is believed to have been the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii in the 19th-century and today boasts a great variety of historic landmarks and popular tourist attractions.

Lahaina is the best area in Maui to stay in for sightseeing because its so easy to explore on foot. No matter where you choose to stay in Lahaina, youre never far from the beach, restaurants, bars, and landmarks.

Where To Stay In Central Maui

Youll likely crisscross Central Maui on your way to the airport and back from beaches in West and South Maui at a minimum. This is the middle of the island between the famous west coast and Hana Highway. Close to the airport with easy access everywhere.

But be sure to visit lush Iao Valley State Park here as well. The state park, just at the base of the West Maui Mountains, offers 400 acres of lush valley for hiking and the opportunity to ogle the famous Iao Needle, a particularly striking and thin mountain peak rising out of the valley here.

Cute little Wailuku is where Mauis county government is based. Youll fall in love with the adorable boutiques and mom and pop establishments that have been here for generations. Kahului is, of course, home to Mauis main airport, but also hosts a swap meet, the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, and the Maui Sunday market.

Pros and cons: If you can stay near the Iao Valley, this is an idyllic location for a base on Maui. You can conveniently access just about anywhere on island. Wailuku feels cozy. And budget travelers will enjoy the hostel scene here.

While Kahului is not a popular base for most visitors to Maui, it does make a great spot if youre looking to minimize drive time to spend more time on the Road to Hana or Mount Haleakala or need to be close to the airport for a flight.

On the other hand, this is not near any swimming beaches. Its more of an industrial area.

    Where To Stay In Kihei

So many visitors to Maui are attracted to the Kihei area because of its central location, sunny weather, beautiful beaches, large number of restaurants, and bargain priced accommodations. It feels more like a town than a lot of Mauis resort areas even though it primarily caters to tourists and there is no end of things to do.

The first decision most visitors to Maui make is between staying on the south side or the west side , but once they decide on the south side, budget travelers usually flock to Kihei.

    Staying In South Maui

    Including Kihei and Wailea

The South Region of Maui, which includes the towns of Kihei and Wailea, is not as famous as the West side of the island, but still offers pretty remarkable options for visitors.

For starters, the weather here is even drier than West Maui, which means more sun and less rain during your stay.

The beaches, and corresponding parking, along this stretch of coastline, are also a lot less crowded than the beaches in West Maui.

    South Maui Highlights

Kihei is about a 20-30 minute drive from Kahului Airport , and Wailea is another 10 minutes beyond Kihei .

Kihei offers a wide variety of condos, which can offer a much-needed price break from some of the most expensive properties in West Maui. Some of the condo rentals are newer than others, and not all are right on the beach, but most are a short stroll from the beaches that line the coastline here.

If money isnt as much of an issue, then we highly recommend the Wailea area, south of Kihei. This area includes several incredible beachfront resorts, some condo complexes, a nice outdoor mall, and several quality restaurants. The entire area is well maintained and wont disappoint visitors who can afford to stay here. Some of our favorite properties here are the Four Seasons Maui, Hotel Wailea, the Wailea Beach Marriott, and the Grand Wailea.
