Which Hotels Are Near La Jolla Village Drive In San Diego
Estancia La Jolla, Sheraton La Jolla, and Hyatt Regency La Jolla are hotels near La Jolla Village Drive.
La Jolla Village Drive is one of the major streets that you exit the I-5 or I-805 on to get to La Jolla and UC San Diego. Therefore, all three hotels are on my list of hotels near UCSD.
The irony is that the vast majority of this street is not located in La Jolla.
La Jolla Village The Best Area To Stay In La Jolla
The village is well connected to San Diego and beyond with buses and trains heading to the major city and is a particularly safe neighbourhood to stay in. As said before, the village is easy to walk around or even better is to cycle, as it is so compact with lots of little narrow streets.
The best things to do and see in La Jolla include the Cave Store, which was actually built on top of a sea cave and there are tours of it as well as a gift shop. There are a few beaches to pick from that surround the village with the most popular being La Jolla Cove, which is perfect for swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving and many other activities. There are many grassy areas to have picnics if you dont fancy being on the sand, though do take note that the beach is part of a reserve and therefore fishing, surfing, wind surfing and generally anything that could do damage to the area is not permitted.
Probably the most interesting beach is Childrens Pool Beach as it is where harbor seals come to breed and happens from mid December through to mid May. During this time the beach is closed but you can still see them clearly and otherwise it should be open to sunbathing and swimming.

This resort is a little isolated, so you will need a car or to utilize the shuttle to head into the La Jolla Village, Village of La Jolla, or elsewhere in town.

Downtown La Jolla is the best spot to stay during your visit to La Jolla because it offers walkable access to most of La Jollas most famous attractions, like La Jolla Cove, the La Jolla sea caves, and the Childrens bar. Downtown La Jolla also has the highest concentration of boutique restaurants, bars, and shopping. All in all, the Village of La Jolla offers the best of all that La Jolla has to offer, all within a few blocks.

The Village of La Jolla, also known as downtown La Jolla, is located in the heart of the lovely town, making it a perfect home base for exploring the best things to do in La Jolla. The downtown, which showcases historical buildings, incredible restaurants, chic bars, and cute shopping boutiques, is perched atop the La Jolla cliffs, and almost every spot offers a view of the Pacific Ocean.
Moreover, youll be steps away from famous attractions such as La Jolla Cove, and the Childrens Pool, and just a short drive from stunning beaches such as Windansea Beach and La Jolla Shores. Many of the hotels in this area are luxurious and beautiful, making this my top recommendation for a romantic getaway.
Pros of Staying in the Village of La Jolla:
- Centrally located for most La Jolla destinations
- Lots of great restaurants and bars that offer stunning patios and ocean views
Con of Staying in Village of La Jolla:

Grande Colonial La Jolla Hotel

Location: Village of La JollaHotel class: Moderate
Why go: The oldest of hotels in La Jolla, the Grande Colonial Hotel was built in 1913 and is still glamorous. Rates can be a good value considering its prime address on Prospect Street, the main shopping and restaurant district in La Jolla .

Hotel amenities:
- Goose down comforters and Serta iComfort Eurotop mattresses
- Complimentary daily passes to La Jolla Sports Club
Good to know: The hotel focuses on Green Initiatives and received the Green Eco-Leaf Rating from iStayGreen. The outdoor pool is a bit small. NINE-TEN has a half-priced bottle of wine nights on Wednesday and supplies the room service menu .
My daughter and I stayed overnight at Grande Colonial several years ago, and Ive meant to check-in again. Weve used the facilities and visited friends there. My Grande Colonial review has some updated information about what its like to stay in La Jolla here. And, its also one of the haunted hotels in San Diego.

Reservations: There are so many different room and suite types that I suggest check rates directly with the hotel first to find one that suits your needs. Then, you can compare to other sites online.

What You Need To Know
TripSavvy / Ana Alarcon
The town of La Jolla is located on the north side of the San Diego metro area, just off I-5.
It’s close to the University of California at San Diego , but more importantly, it’s the most scenic seaside town in the San Diego area.
When we say La Jolla, that includes the Village of La Jolla . It also includes La Jolla Shores, Torrey Pines and La Jolla Village, a confusingly similar-named area near the university and interstate.
The Sands Of La Jolla
5417 La Jolla Blvd., La Jolla 92037
The Sands of La Jolla is a family-owned and operated boutique hotel that recently remodeled all of its rooms and suites. Though its a bit closer to the Bird Rock neighborhood, its easily walkable to downtown La Jolla and is just a few minutes walk from nearby La Jolla beaches like Windansea Beach . All rooms have balconies or patio, and theres a heated pool and outdoor lounge onsite. Rates stay between $93 and $129, depending on availability. Check the website for more information.

Is La Jolla Or Coronado Better
Both La Jolla and Coronado are luxurious beach communities with upscale dining and hotel options with beautiful beaches. While you cant go wrong staying in either of these two wonderful places, La Jolla offers a wider variety of activities and sites, such as the sea lions at La Jolla Cove, kayaking through the beautiful underwater park and caves, and the unique Childrens Pool.
Golden Triangle/ Utc Area
University City is nicknamed the golden triangle because it is triangular in shape and is the focus of the citys economic hub with research, high-tech and bio-tech companies of varying sizes. The Golden Triangle has Route 52 as its boundary to the south, Freeway 805 to the east, and Freeway 5 to the west. The area also contains the community of University City. Most people are either visiting the university or one of the companies. For convenience, it is ideal to stay within the triangle, but the good news is that the triangle is bordered by La Jolla for fun leisure moments.
The Rose Canyon Park divides the area in two. The canyon is a fun oasis with a creek and trails. The San Clemente Canyon , is similar in style and is located on the triangles southern border. The Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is an iconic building in the area, as it has two58 metre white spires. Stanley Park is situated in the southern part of the Golden Triangle and the Westfield UTC Mall is popular with both shoppers and diners.

Which La Jolla Hotels Are Truly Oceanfront
Its important to quickly understand the difference between an oceanfront hotel and a beachfront hotel as it is easy to confuse the two and many hotels blur the two.
Beachfront hotels provide direct beach access and are located on the beach line. Oceanfront hotels are located along the coastline, but have views of the ocean and no direct access.
With that in mind, some oceanfront hotels to consider include La Valencia Hotel and Pantai Inn.
