What To Do In West Yellowstone National Park: Track Bison Like A Pro
It bears repeating: bison and other wildlife in Yellowstone are wild and not domesticated, farm-variety animals like cows, sheep, and goats in a petting zoo. In the time that weve been here, several tourists have been head-butted or gored because they either got too close to wild beasts or tried to pet them! So the best advice I can share here is to give any wild animals you encounter plenty of space, and only get close with a good zoom lens. That said, if you do come across wildlife and are lucky enough to do so away from throngs of people, you can capture some truly amazing images.
We were heading back past Gibbon Falls when I spotted this herd in the distance, bedded down along the Madison River. I found a safe turnout and flipped around so we could hike down the embankment toward the river. Again, even though I appear to be pretty close to these bison, its the magic of photography and a powerful Nikon lens that got me that close. I would never risk my life for a good photo, although I have taken a risk or two to get a great shot from time to time!
Where Can You Stay In West Yellowstone Montana
West Yellowstone is where most visitors stay when visiting Yellowstone. Its not a huge city or anything like that, but it has the most hotels and attractions outside the park. There are many places to stay, but here are our top three suggestions:
Kelly Inn. This hotel has a pool, seems very family-friendly, and its right across the street from the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center and IMAX theater. Its also pet friendly.
Days Inn. We have stayed here before, and we loved it. They gave us a HUGE suite for our big family. And they have a pool with a water slide, which is a HUGE hit with our kids. After a long day of driving and hiking, a water slide really makes it worth all the effort.
1872 Inn. This one is not kid-friendly, which might appeal to many adults! It is a boutique hotel, which means each room is different. Its more of a luxury hotel, with fewer than 100 rooms. Rooms are typically over $350 per night.
Under Canvas. This is glamping at its finest! You stay in the outdoors, covered with a canvas tent, but you get to sleep in a real bed. Costs $150-$300/night.

Grand Canyon Of The Yellowstone
What a sight, theGrand Canyon of the Yellowstone! Where can you sleep near this fascinating new spectacle of nature? The choice is not difficult, even here, as there is only one lodge for those who want to sleep on the doorstep of the roaring waterfalls of the Grand Canyon River. It is also a strategic position to reach other parts of the park.
- Canyon Lodge: a huge hotel structure, recently extended, with the addition of new buildings that mirror each other. The large availability of rooms means that many people find themselves booking a room here, in the absence of other options within the park. To get a somewhat higher level of accommodations, you will need to spend a bit more. Check prices and availability

What Are The Best Hot Springs In Mammoth Lakes
Without further adieu, here are the five best hot springs in Mammoth Lakes, including where to find them.
1. The Rock Hot Tub
The Rock Hot Tub is a shallow pool that comfortably fits about four people . The water is piped in from a bog about 400 feet away, but, unlike most of the springs in the area, theres no valves to control the temperature. As such, I think a more accurate description of this one is a warm-ish spring- its definitely the chilliest in the area! While this spot is perhaps lacking in heat and space, it has one of the best views of the Sierra Nevadas.
The springs are located right off Whitmore Tubs Road- from the southern entrance of the road from Benton Crossing Road, you should be fine driving here in a low clearance vehicle . Bonus- most of the hot springs, including the Rock Hot Tub, is located on Bureau of Land Management land. You can camp on this BLM land– for free!- for up to 14 days at a time. Justin and I camped at the Rock Hot Tub during our stay in Mammoth- not only did it have decent mobile connectivity, but we could literally walk about 100 feet and plop into our own personal hot spring! If you plan on camping near any of the Mammoth Lakes hot springs, make sure to double check that camping is allowed where youre staying and again, please follow the leave no trace principles.
2. Wild Willys Hot Springs

Should You Stay In The Park
Obviously this is a personal choice, but here are some things to consider.
Cost. Places in the park will generally cost more than an equivalent hotel outside of the park. They really range in price, depending on where you stay and how big your room is. Ive seen some as inexpensive as $164 a night in the fall, and others over $1000 a night in the summer.
Notice that many places have a lodge AND cabins. The cabins are more rustic with fewer amenities. For example, you usually dont have your own restroom you share with others. Of course, they also cost less.
Availability. Yellowstone has about 2300 rooms in the park, and believe it or not, they often book up a YEAR in advance. So book early! They are generally open from mid-June to mid-October, except for the Mammoth Hotel and the Old Faithful Snow Lodge, which have winter availability as well.
May is usually when the website allows you to start booking for the NEXT summer season . However, that doesnt mean you cant find one for the current season. Im writing this in the fall, and I just found some rooms in September and October of this year. There are fewer visitors in the fall, of course.
Travel time. One of the main advantages of staying in the park is it can help reduce your travel time. Its important to know that it takes a LONG time to drive around in Yellowstone.
It takes about 2.5 hours to drive around one of the loops . And thats just driving time. It could be even longer if you get stuck in a Buffalo Jam.

Mammoth Hot Springs Terraces
The Mammoth Terraces are one of the major geyser basins in Yellowstone and we believe one of coolest looking thermal areas in the entire park. The colors range from a pristine white to pink to dark red. The thing that caught my eye is that the different levels of the terrace are extremely flat and level. Being someone who can spot diverging lines from a mile away, I really appreciated this!
Exploring these travertine formations that were created over thousands of years is a treat for the whole family. There is parking for the lower terrace along the roadside and its just a short walk to the terraces themselves. There is a boardwalk trail that runs from the parking lot and goes the entire length of the lower and upper terrace so you could bring a stroller if that will make it easier for you. The whole boardwalk is 1.75 miles.
The boardwalk connects to the upper travertine terraces level, so you can walk the entire way, or you can take your car to the upper terrace drive if youve had enough walking. It can be very hot here so dont be fooled thinking it is a short walk/hike. Instead bring water and be prepared. Our advice is to just take your shirt off, tie it around your head, and keep on keepin on!
Did you know? Mammoth Hot Springs deposits about 2 tons of calcium carbonate or travertine limestone per day! They also believe these terraces were formed around the Pinedale Glaciation.
Where Is Mammoth Hot Springs
Which area is this closer to…Old Faithful or Lake area? Are Mammoth hot Springs a must see or should we skip it? Is that where the smelly geysers are?Wanted to know how we should plan. Our itinerary is Lamar Valley one morning early and then go to explore the grand Canyon. Firehole River on day 2. The first day we arrive at the Lake Hotel we are open to suggestions. Thank-you!
I did give you some itinerary ideas in your previous thread here. There was a suggestion on working in Mammoth Terraces on one of your days.
There are no geysers at Mammoth. It is travertine terraces. Many people feel like a trip to Yellowstone is not complete without seeing the Mammoth terraces. Others are disappointed because the terraces facing the road are dry and gray looking. If they saw them in the early 2000’s they look very different now than then. It’s hard to tell another person whether this location has *worth* for them. There is a lot to see in the area besides the terraces including the old buildings from Ft Yellowstone , sometimes wildlife around the lawns of the area, waterfalls nearby .
The really smelly mud pots are at Mud Volcano which is between Canyon and Lake just south of the Hayden Valley.
I think based on that, we are going to opt for the Grand Canyon South Rim trail hike instead. Everything is so spread out. We only have so much time and energy. Thank-you again.

Is Mammoth Hot Springs Drying Up
One of the questions we hear often is asking if Mammoth Hot Springs is drying up. The quick answer is no they are not drying up.
The area is constantly changing and evolving based on the volume of water coming out of the springs. Features will go dormant and then start again sometimes a few days later other times after months or years.
There is always a new feature or growth happening which makes this one of our favorite areas in the park to visit. Every visit you can see something new and check out how the features have changed.
In this area the geologic process is always happening before your eyes.

When Should I Visit Mammoth Lakes Hot Springs
The best time to visit Mammoth Lakes for its hot springs is likely in the spring and fall, when the temperature is pleasant, theres limited bugs, and the Sierra Nevadas will likely have a dusting of snow on their peaks, adding a bit more magic to the scenery. Summer is a popular time to visit the Eastern Sierras with the hiking trails free from snow, but word of warning- its often too hot to enjoy the springs during the day and while theyre pleasant to soak in at twilight or in the evening, the mosquitoes can be pretty bad. As mentioned above, Mammoth is a popular winter destination and the tubs would be a perfect apres-ski treat. Note, however, that Mammoth can get quite a bit of snow in the wintertime . Since the roads to the springs are largely unmaintained, you may have a challenge reaching them in icy or snowy weather. When my husband, Justin, and I visited, we met a woman who lived in the area and snowshoed to the springs in the wintertime. So if you go the winter route, be prepared to get creative with how you reach the springs!
Ready To Book Your Mammoth Hot Springs Lodging
Head to the official booking site to check availability and make reservations. Youll want to book your reservations as soon as possible as Mammoth is one of the most popular places to stay in Yellowstone and it will frequently sell out during the summer months. If you cancel or change your reservation more than 30 days ahead of your stay, this will be refunded. If you cancel or modify less than 30 days ahead, a $25 fee will be charged. If you cancel on short notice 7 days for a summer arrival or 14 for winter the full deposit will be kept.
