Explore Historic Downtown Mendocino

Downtown Mendocino is a picturesque village surrounded by the gorgeous Marin Headlands on three sides. The towns backyard is Big River and towering coastal redwoods.

The seaside town has a unique character. It is full of restaurants, shops, and inns that feel like they are from another time and place. Perhaps thats why it was chosen as a film location for shows like The Majestic, set in the 1950s, and Murder She Wrote, set in a small coastal town in Maine.

Downtown Mendocino is a great spot for a stroll. Park your car and head to the beach, try some restaurants, and check out a variety of unique shops. The following are some notable stops the whole family can enjoy.

My six-year-old JJ is a shopper, and it was hard to get him to leave the Out of This World Shop. This little store has a wonderful selection of educational and science-themed toys, games, puzzles, kits, and more. The front window faces the Pacific Ocean and is lined with telescopes that you can peek through. Its also known to be the largest binocular retailer in Central and Northern California, should you want to get a closer look at the amazing shorebirds that live just down the road.

Founded in 1962, Gallery Bookshop is a great find. The book-loving staff is happy to help you find your next perfect read, and families love the Bookwinkles childrens section. The resident cat is a store mascot. Give him a pet while browsing.

Take A Ride On The Skunk Train Or Cruise On Railbikes

Located 10 miles north of downtown Mendocino, Fort Bragg is a bit larger and offers plenty of family-friendly things to do.

The biggest attraction for a visit to Mendocino with kids is Fort Braggs historic Skunk Train. Since 1885, the Skunk Train has wound its way through old-growth redwood groves and into the Noyo River canyon. Riders enjoy the same gorgeous views that have welcomed passengers for over 100 years.

Seasonal and holiday rides take place around Easter, fall harvest, and Christmas.

One of the Skunk Trains newest attractions is the Rail Bikes. The electric-powered rail bikes send you and a buddy breezing along Pudding Creek and into the heart of Mendocino Countys redwood groves. These guided journeys include a stopover at Glen Blair Junction for a picnic or walk in the woods.

Children who are 3-5 years old must ride with a provided harness or their own car seat. Dog trailers can be added at an additional cost.

Little River The Coolest Neighbourhood To Stay In Mendocino

Little River is two miles south of the Mendocino Community and is a tiny town thats home to several hundred people. If you want to experience the real American small-town feel during your vacation, then this is where you should base yourself.

There isnt a lot to do in Little River apart from heading outside of the town to enjoy everything that nature provides. This town does sit on the river, so you can try some water sports, and its also close to national parks for hiking, camping, and wildlife experiences.

Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens

One of the highlights of our time in Mendocino was the 47-acre Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens in the town of Fort Bragg. A few not-to-miss experiences are sitting in the first big garden and watching the hummingbirds, visiting the organic vegetable garden , the Fern Canyon Trail, and the bluffs, where you can view the ocean from benches, trails, and the Cliff House. As always, be careful on the bluff trails.

With kids, dont miss the Adventure Trail and download the Quail Trail guide to the gardens. Admission to this non-profit organization is $14 for adults, $5 for kids . There is a cafe, gift shop, and plant nursery on site.

Harbor House Inn

Just south of Mendocino in Elk, the Harbor House Inn became the first restaurant in Mendocino County to nab a Michelin Star in 2019. While their dining room is once again accepting reservations for its 11-course, seafood-focused tasting menu, a more casual option is to swing by for a la carte snacks on their sunny, ocean-view deck . Pair it with wine, beer, or a selection from their extensive sake list. This is available by reservation noon to 3pm, Friday through Sunday. // 5600 CA-1 ,

Luna Trattoria

While this bustling Italian eatery is hidden off the main streets of town and down an alleyway , its reputation is no secretâin other words, expect to wait a bit for a table. But, due to Covid-19, the restaurant is, for the first time, accepting reservations for limited seating in its dining room and on the patio. Order up traditional Northern Italian dishes including homemade orecchioni pasta, a green ravioli stuffed with ricotta cheese, parmesan, and spinach served in a butter and sage sauce. Things To Do With Kids Away From The Mendocino Coast

Best Place To Stay With Kids In Mendocino

The Mendocino activities listed above are all on the coast. Outside the coastal area, there is plenty of fun to be had before getting to the adjacent counties of Humboldt and Sonoma.

One word of warning: though the mileage might not be far, all the roads that lead to Mendocino are winding! The 40 mile stretch between Fort Bragg and the Chandelier Drive-Through Tree was a full hour and a half of twists and turns. And while I love a good drive, the kids in the backseat had a more difficult time. Come prepared with ginger and limes to ease any tummy troubles. • Russian Gulch State Park

One of the most stunning state parks Ive ever visited, Russian Gulch State Park sits on the coast just two miles north of the town of Mendocino. The parks main attractions are the 36 waterfall, a mile and a half of craggy headlands, Devils Punchbowl, and the bridge . There are also three miles of paved bike trails and picnic tables with amazing ocean views.

Like most of the Mendocino area, this park is not crowded at all. When we were here, we came upon only 6 other people!

This two-lane highway is one way to reach the Mendocino Coast if youre coming from the east. Save some time to pull over and experience the magic of these amazing trees for yourself. Youll see turnouts and trails that are visible from the road we actually pulled into a closed state park campground and walked among the redwoods for about 45 minutes. Find out more here.

    Gardens & Additional Guest Quarters

On the other side of the parking lot are additional guest quarters in the cottage. This part of the property used to be Jim Roberts’ original home, which Jim and Brian remodeled and divided up into separate accommodations – all named after the spaces they once were in the original house. For instance, there’s the Living Room, the Kitchen, the Master, Spare Rooms, and Garden View. Each quest quarters has a separate entrance, and plenty of privacy.

If you’re traveling with children and/or pets, The Kitchen is my pick for you. It’s beautifully decorated and spacious, with two large beds, a large master bathroom, and lots of gorgeous sunlight.

One of the things that makes The Madrones one of the best places to stay in Mendocino County is the serene, landscaped gardens. Walking around the property, guests can enjoy hundreds of different roses throughout the gardens. Owner Jim Roberts’ mother is reportedly the rose guru responsible for planting/helping plant these beautiful gardens, and you can definitely feel the love for these flowers as you stroll around.

Side note: I don’t include many pics of myself because I’m usually the one enthralled in photography bliss on these trips. Thanks to my husband for snapping this pic! Also: I really, really, really don’t like pictures of myself, so please pardon the awkward poses as I try to get used to having my picture taken by other people!

Not on the way to anything, at the end of HWY 128 is The Village of Mendocino. The officially unofficial center of Mendocino County. And, not unlike the revolutionary Naturalists and Hippies that preceded them, this settlement is a magnet for artists, musicians, writers, and wine lovers who come from around the world seeking inspiration. Its also here you can find the best wines that Mendocino Countys 10 AVAs have to offer in tasting rooms, restaurants, wine shops, spas, and Inns.

At the beginning of this series, I mentioned that Northern Californias Mendocino County has historically attracted famous and influential iconoclasts. Theodore Roosevelt, Mark Twain, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Jack London are a few of the free thinkers of the late 19th Century who made regular visits to this region. I also expressed how Mendocino County has become the frontrunner of the Post-Modern Back to the Land movement in California wine, beer, and spirits and that the Anderson Valley is ground zero for Mendocinos winemaking and vinography.
