Garden District The Coolest Neighborhood In New Orleans

Visit New Orleans – The Don’ts of Visiting New Orleans

The Garden District is located on the south side of New Orleans downtown . It is a very cool area famous for its historic mansions, elegant boutiques, and nice cafes. The best way to enjoy the Garden District is simply by having a stroll along beautiful streets, spotting colorful mansions, and enjoying chic cafes in between.

If you are a person like me who loves to be surprised by streets that come up with new things around every corner, you will enjoy this stroll for sure!

If you head uptown you will reach the Lower Garden District. It is not as fancy as the garden district but here you will find many pubs and budget-friendly restaurants. Another great way to wander around this neighborhood is by renting a bike. By bike, you can easily reach other neighborhoods and also enjoy some time in the parks.

Of course, the laid-back, elegant neighborhood of the Garden District offers many nice accommodation options too. Here are some of my favorite places I chose for you:

How To Choose The Right Hotel For Your Stay In New Orleans

When it comes to choosing where to stay in New Orleans, there are several things you need to take into account.

First, what type of traveler are you? Do you like buildings with a history or do you crave the most up to date rooms and an amazing fitness center? Do you like to be in the touristy action or do you prefer a more local vibe?

Whatever your preference, there is a hotel in New Orleans for you. Here, I break down each neighborhood and the top hotels I choose from when there.

Where To Stay In New Orleans For Romance

Couples who are looking for a romantic getaway in the heart of New Orleans’ lively French Quarter will have no shortage of options, including these romantic hotels that are all within one block of Bourbon Street.

By the New Orleans Musical Legends Park, Hotel Mazarin has a large, beautiful interior courtyard with a fountain and a banquet room for special events. The clean, comfortable rooms include a generous breakfast. For a double balcony, ask to book a corner room.

Just one block from Canal Street, the Hotel Monteleone is also across the street from several upscale galleries and boutiques. This pet-friendly hotel exudes southern elegance and has a heated outdoor pool, fitness center, and spa for the ultimate pampering.

The upscale, boutique Hotel Le Marais is a hot spot for celebrities, located in the center of the action just off Bourbon Street. The property features stylish but simple rooms with private balconies and bathrobes. There is also a swimming pool, business center, lounge, and fitness center on-site.

Navigate Parking Like The Locals

In the back of the Quarter, a residential parking program gives local registered parkers an advantage and a pass, but even registered parkers have to play a tricky game of hopscotch parking to stay ahead of street cleaning and time limits. Many residents arrange to park their vehicles in private lots or parking buildings nearby, at significant cost, we might add. Savvy Quarterites walk, bike, scoot and generally take advantage of the historic districts appealing scale.

You will be in the heart of New Orleans, including steps from popular Bourbon Street and family-friendly attractions.

1. Hotel Le Marais

Port Of New Orleans Erato & Julia Street Cruise Terminals

New Orleans is the sixth largest cruise port in the United States. With the port situated on the Mississippi River and close to the Gulf of Mexico, many Caribbean and river cruise itineraries include the city. Cruise terminals are in the heart of the city and minutes from the Crescent Citys cultural attractions and world class amenities.

According to the Port of New Orleans, over a million cruise passengers visit the city each year. Carnival and Disney cruises are served by the Erato Street Cruise Terminal, while the Julia Street Cruise Terminal is for Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean cruises. Both terminals are within a five- to ten-minute drive of the French Quarter and are served by the Riverfront streetcar. Parking is available at both facilities.

Staying Downtown Offers Proximity And Traditional Options

If you arent one for stepping outside the box, and instead prefer to stick to well-known brands, Downtown is the best option for your family. Brands you know and trust often provide a consistent experience you j ust cant beat. Still close to lots of restaurants, and easy walking distance to the Quarter, Downtown offers lots of bang , but the price tag shows it.

However, sometimes, you just cant beat a brand-name in a big city. From the bellman to the concierge, you are the center of attention at these four hotels.

Roosevelt Hotel A Waldorf Astoria Hotel is in the heart of downtown. They decorate to the hilt around the holidays, so if your trip happens to be around this time, youre in for a treat. With a full-service spa, this 5-star hotel has you covered after a long day of walking. The bad, news, parking and breakfast come at a premium .

The Ritz-Carlton on Canal Street is just steps away from the Quarter and directly on the Canal Street streetcar line. The rooftop lounge area is spectacular. Like all Ritz-Carlton hotels, youre in for 5-star treatment when you book here. From plush robes to complimentary shoeshine service, Ritz hotels do you right, no matter the city. Parking is $46/day.

Bonus: This hotel is directly on a parade route for Mardi Gras. Downside: Its directly on a parade route for Mardi Gras so getting in and out during key parades might be a hassle and the noise level in your room due to excessive crowds during this festival may be intolerable.

Choosing Where To Stay In New Orleans

When choosing where to stay in New Orleans with your family, take into account what you want to see and the vibe you want to feel. Although the French Quarter and Downtown are iconic, I typically choose Uptown. Im not sure if its because thats where we lived and I feel connected somehow to the area, or if Im just over the crowds and prefer a more local feel when I visit places.

No matter which area of the city you decide upon, these hotels are great bets. You cant go wrong with any of them, and you can always get to the other areas of town easily throughout your visit.

Parking At Your Hotel

Visitors with reservations at French Quarter hotels can park their vehicles with the hotel but should be aware that it is an extra charge and can be as much as $30 to $45 a day. Dont even think of bringing an oversized vehicle onto the streets of the Quarter without some good and defensible reason, prior permissions and permits from the Police Department. Anything bigger than an SUV is likely to get jammed at the corners and stymied on the narrow streets that were originally laid out for horse-drawn vehicles.

Where is the best location to stay in New Orleans?

Honestly, the best location to stay in New Orleans is right in the heart of the city. This way youll be close to the cruise port and be able to visit as much of New Orleans as you want. If youd rather not be right in the city, Metairie is also a great choice and only a few miles away.Of the list above, our favorite hotel to stay in for cruises is the first one on the list, the New Orleans Riverside. Its walking distance from the port you get a steep discount on parking and on your room cost.

Is parking free in New Orleans?

No, there is no truly free parking available in New Orleans. Even if you book a Park & Cruise package from a hotel, and the details of the package includes free parking, its still not completely free. Its very likely that the package costs more than their standard rate, so in a way youre still paying to park your car there. Therefore, when it comes to finding a great hotel to stay in, we tend to prefer the ones that offer a discount on their normal parking rates, rather than hiking up the price of their cruise package.

How much is it to park at the New Orleans cruise port?

To park at the New Orleans Cruise Port it costs between $20-$22 per day. More if you have an oversized vehicle like a bus or an RV. If you are using the Erato Street Cruise Terminal, youll park in the garage on top of the terminal. For the Julia Street Cruise Terminal the parking lot is just off to the side from the terminal.
