Watch Whales Breaching Right Off The Coast

Whats cooler than being able to see these gentle giants up close? Maui is a great place to go whale watching, but this is a seasonal activity. The only time of year that whale watching runs is between November and May, however January to March is the peak season for whale watching in Maui.

The best place to go whale watching in Maui is off the islands western coast. Id recommend booking this afternoon whale watching tour from Maalaea Harbor. If youre interested in a much more up-close and personal experience with the whales, check out this kayak whale watching and snorkel tour.

Where To Stay In Upcountry

Where to Stay in Maui and Our Favorite Hotels

This is rural Maui, also in the middle of the island, just south of Central Maui. While its not a typical tourist choice for a base, youll meet more locals than tourists with easy access everywhere.

Upcountry Maui is locals Maui away from the beaches. In fact, Hawaiians have been farming taro and sweet potatoes in this fertile heartland of green rolling hills and drifting fog for generations.

Youll inevitably pass through here on your way to Haleakala even if you dont stay here as you pass rural outposts and goat farms. Upcountry is more than just a place its a way of life.

Pros and cons: Stay in upcountry if youre looking for a peaceful, authentic Maui experience. Skip it if youre interested in nightlife. The weather can also be cooler here .

Here are my picks for Upcountry:

1. Coast to Coast Views in Kula

Nestled on the slopes of Haleakala, the Haleakala Princess Estate is a unique property with sweeping views of both coasts! Its possibly the best view on island. Youll be wandering 3.5 acres of native Hawaiian gardens here and lounging in special outdoor nooks and watching the sunset around the gas fire pit or hot tub. A huge tile deck wraps around the whole house.

Best for: Groups of up to six people as both a main house and cottage are included.

2. Modern Cottage in Historic Wailuku

Best for: A couple or solo traveler on a budget.

Where To Stay In Maui: A Map

Heres a little map. I added in words in purple so you know what Im talking about later. Im generalizing a little bit, but this is the gist.

To drive, you can see the roads go around the island because there are parks in the middle. It took about 20 minutes from North to Kihei . Then for example, Kihei to Lahaina will take 40 minutes, and Kahului to Lahaina 45 minutes.

Wander Around The Charming Town Of Paia

Located on Mauis northern shore, Paia is a charming little town that makes for a perfect stop during your trip to Maui. Its also conveniently located at the start of the Road to Hana, making it a great place to visit after youre finished your Road to Hana drive.

Paia is full of great little shops and restaurants, including the famous Mamas Fish House. If you want to stop at Mamas Fish House, make sure to make a reservation! If youre looking to spend extra time in Paia, check out some of the beaches in the area, like Hookipa Beach Park, Baldwin Beach Park, and Paia Secret Beach.

Along The Hana Highway

Fewer tourists choose lodging along this bucket list drive on the east side of the island. The bonus, of course, is that youll enjoy the epic views and waterfalls galore here without the crowds when the day-trippers go home. Best for those who love active adventures with fewer crowds.

When To Visit Maui Hawaii

Hawaii, and more specifically the island of Maui, is beautiful to visit all year long. The weather is consistently in the 80s all year long, with the hottest temperatures during the summer months of June-September.

Maui does have a rainy season during its winter, from November to March. That being said, Maui is a tropical island so the rains tend to be powerful, but short-lived and it only rains about 20% of the time. The island of Maui has so much to offer year round, so dont ever hesitate to visit because of the timing.

The Best Things To Do In Paia Maui

Shop in Paia Town: If youre looking for beachwear or island-themed gifts, the town of Paia offers some of the most unique and eclectic shops to wander around in. Bring your wallet though because these small shops can get quite pricey. A few to check out:

  • Dont miss Alice in Hulaland , where you can find a reasonably priced beach bag and lots of Hawaiian themed clothing . :p
  • If youre looking for some uniquely designed jewelry, be sure to stop into Heart in Paia, where you can buy pieces directly from the artist. Shop small and support!
  • And I always love stopping in Pakaloha their bikinis come in a rainbow of colors . They are kinda pricey but Ive been happily wearing mine for years without much wear and tear.

Colorful Surfboard Photo Opp: Make a quick stop at the Aloha Surf Hostel to take a picture with the array of colorful surfboards . Youll find the hostel right on Baldwin Avenue, a little up the road . Itll take all of 5 minutes, but worth it in my opinion!

Hang at the Beach: Need to cool off? I hear ya all that walking around in the hot Hawaiin air is difficult ?. Take a break and head to the beach, watch the surfers, and take a dip.

Theres quite a few beaches in Paia, but I highly recommend Baby Beach for a chilled-out lagoon and Hookipa Beach if you wanna see some turtles! See below for information about specific beaches in Paia!

Why these areas are great: Youll rarely find strong currents, big waves, or winds that blow sand up into your face in these areas. Theres awesome snorkeling, a peaceful relaxing vibe, and an abundance of delicious restaurants. Plus, if you have teens looking for a surf, the 1,000 Peaks surf break in Olowalu isnt far and is great for beginners and intermediate surfers.

Keep in mind: If you are just wanting to relax at your hotel and head to the beach, local transport will be fine. But, its good to have a rental car in these areas if you want to explore the rest of the island. Also, be aware that these areas in general are more expensive than others.

Now, lets take a look, in more detail, at the five best areas to stay in Maui. Each offers different attractions, activities, and natural wonders, so make sure you read each section carefully and pick the area thats right for you! keep in mind that Maui is one of Hawaiis most expensive islands, so make sure you plan ahead and set up the right travel budget.

Upcountry Paia Kihei Kahului

Windsurfboards along Baldwin Ave in Paia, Maui.

Why its great: Mauis neighborhoods are as diverse as its terrain. Where you should stay will depend on what kind of locals experience you are wanting. Paia feels like a small hippie beach town Upcountry feels like a secluded rainforest retreat. Kihei is a bit of local and tourist mash-up but the beaches are calm and there are many casual restaurants nearby. And Kahului is straight locals with slightly urban budget hotels that are a short drive from decent beaches.

Keep in mind: Make sure to pick your local vibe neighborhood based on what you are looking for in your vacation. Dont go for Upcountry or Paia if you want to be super close to beaches without big waves pick Kihei in that instance. If you are a surfer and want to be near the north shore or dont mind a 30 min drive to Wailea then Upcountry and Paia are awesome choices. On the other hand, Wailea and Lahaina have a pretty strong tourist vibe so its not ideal for a locals experience.
