Places To Stay In Puerto Escondido

Beachfront Bungalow At Hotel Escondido

The best place to stay in Puerto Escondido

Miss Dela Pena, your room is ready. Once we jumped up in excitement and gathered our things, we were escorted to bungalow #16, one of the most private rooms in the entire resort. As mentioned before, there are only 16 luxury, thatched-roof bungalows on the property. All bungalows are rustic-chic, yet authentic to classic, Mexican palapa design.

Once we opened our bungalow door, we entered beachfront bliss. A charming Mexican palapa with luxury amenities and sweeping ocean views I must be dreaming. As I walked through our spacious patio and private plunge pool surrounded by hammocks, lounge chairs, and bougainvilleas, all I could say to myself was wow, this is the life.

The room itself was stylish and comfortable with thoughtful touches like beach bags, sun hats, and natural bug spray. We were traveling as a group of 3, and even with an additional bed, there was ample space.

The king size bed was so comfortable, and sleeping to the sounds of the waves was incredibly peaceful. One of our favorite moments of our stay was rolling out of bed in our cute, jean robes to watch sunrise on the beach.

Location #: La Punta A Backpackers Paradise

La Punta boasts a lively, rustic and bohemian vibe that has attracted backpackers like bees to honey.

20 metres behind the popular surfing beach of La Punta Zicatela, youll find sand roads lined with quirky restaurants and bars. There are brunch and seafood restaurants galore here, plus you wont struggle to find a good smoothie bowl either.

After everyone gathers on the beach to watch the stunning sunset, the streets start to come alive. There are plenty of places to party here or to just have a relaxed dinner, enjoying some delicious food.

One downside of La Punta is there are no ATMs or big supermarkets. For that youll have to travel to Zicatela. Its only a 10-15 minute drive away in either a colectivo or taxi, costing you 8 MXN or 40 MXN respectively.

Zicatela is smack bang in the middle of La Punta and Carrizalillo. Its essentially the heart of Puerto Escondido. Here youll find plenty of restaurants, bars, big supermarkets and banks.

The highlight though? Zicatela beach! Its considered by many as one of the best beaches in Mexico. Firstly its huge, so it never feels too crowded. Secondly, its a dream destination for surfers all around the world due to the famous Mexican pipeline.

Best Hostel For Solo Travelers In Puerto Escondido Tower Bridge Hostel

  • $
  • Swimming Pool
  • On Site Bar

Theres a truly awesome social feel to this hostel which is why its EASILY our top pick for the best hostel in Puerto Escondido for solo travellers. Theres a swimming pool to hang out around , events going on all the time, trips to waterfalls, oh and a spot of beer pong to seal the deal.

When youre by yourself in a new place its not JUST about the atmosphere though. Sometimes getting from A to B can be a total drag, so the free shuttle the hostel puts on to beaches on the daily is very, very much appreciated.

Hotels In Playa Principal/ Puerto Escondido Town

WE COULD STAY HERE FOREVER – Reasons why Puerto Escondido could be the best place to live right now

Hostel: Casa Losodeli is a small, locally-run hostel with a friendly atmosphere. It is not a party hostel, but the staff make everyone feel welcome. The dorms are spacious and clean, and the pool area is a great spot to hang out.

Selina Puerto Escondido is a boutique-style hostel offering private and dorm rooms. There are two pools and lots of other facilities. Its a good place if you want to party if not, maybe head elsewhere as its certainly in one of the noisier parts of town.

Mid-Range Hotel: If youre looking for a cheap yet classic guesthouse, Hotel Barlovento has a pool area, and clean and comfortable rooms at a budget price.

Luxury Hotel: Hotel Santa Fe is heading towards the Zicatela end of town, but its a great luxury pick for those who like the finer things in life! The four-star hotel has a lovely tropical pool area and rustic rooms with a homely feel. There is also an attached restaurant with some great vegetarian options.

Best Place To Stay Near Playa Carrizalillo: Casa Losodeli & Coworking Space

I feel pretty confident in saying that Casa Losodeli is one of the best hostels in Mexico, and certainly one of the best places to stay in Puerto Escondido, whether youre on a budget or not. If youre working remotely, on a long backpacking trip, planning a quick visit to Puerto, traveling solo, or passing through with a friend or partner, do yourself a favor and check it out. Heres why:

Casa Losodeli is maybe the closest place to stay to Carrizalillo Beach, but its still about a 10-15 minute walk to get there. Totally worth it if making the walk is an option for you, but if not, their pool, palapa, and hammocks are a dreamy place to spend an afternoon. On days when I was working or just wasnt up for the hot walk to the beach, I loved ordering a fresh, made-on-the-spot smoothie, getting some work done at their communal tables, and taking breaks to cool off in the pool. The kitchen is neat, the breakfast menu is incredible, and I planned my days around the hours when their staff was available to make those smoothies. Seriously.

Dorm rooms are clean and cute , standard private rooms come with air conditioning and ceiling fans , and they even offer small apartments complete with private kitchens, coffee machines, showers, TVs, and air conditioning . Ideal for couples and digital nomads, especially.

Nature Experiences Day Trips From Puerto Escondido

  • Laguna de Manialtepec: explore this eco reserve on a day trip, or take a nighttime tour to explore its bioluminescent bay. I did the nighttime tour in early November while there was no moon, and it was hands-down one of the coolest things Ive ever done. It was like being in a video game the water really sparkled when you moved your arms!
  • Sea turtle release: help release sea turtle hatchlings at Playa Bacochowith a conservation group. I did this, and I literally started crying when they handed me the little bucket of turtles. I also MIGHT have thrown sand to keep the seagulls away from my babies while they made their way to the ocean. .
  • Cascada La Reforma: visit these waterfalls in a secluded setting on a day trip check out this itinerarythat includes a sea turtle release

Where To Stay In Puerto Escondidos Town Center

If youre wanting to check out the best that Puerto Escondido has to offer, its town center probably isnt the best spot to stay in. But if youre looking for somewhere to post up thats not too far from the airport, the ADO station, and swim-friendly beaches, then this is the spot for you.

Making the centro your home base means youre a short cab ride away or a long walk away from Puertos swimmable beaches And while the sunsets over Zicatela might be a longer cab ride away, there are plenty of local restaurants to check out in the town center.

Playa La Punta: Surfing & Chilled Out In Puerto Escondido

Where to Stay in Puerto Escondido, Mexico: Casamar Suites ...

La Punta is another great Oaxaca beach option, the southernmost section of Playa Zicatela. La Puntas smaller waves make it better for less experienced surfers. Its also perfect for beach lovers looking for a chill yet up-and-coming vibe with bars and restaurants on the beach. Locals say that its what Puerto Escondido was like 20 years ago, so later you can be one of the ones to say Oh, Ive been staying in La Punta forever

Its a 20-30 minute walk down the beach to the main section of Zicatela, but its best to make the walk during the daytime.

Where To Swim And Surf Near Puerto Escondido

If beach time is what you seek, you have a few beaches to choose from.

Playa Manzanillo and Puerto Angelito

The same bay houses these two beaches, which are separated by rocks. Both beaches are calm, without the strong undertow of Zicatela. That said, they do get a bit crowded as the bay isnt that big. Lots of palapas to rest under, beers to drink, and places to stake out with a comfortable mat or towel. Good spot for snorkeling. You can rent a lounge chair with plastic pillows and the shade of a big umbrella. Be warned, though, boats motor right up to shore during high season to pick up and drop off tourists for a boat tour of the area.

Playa Zicatela

Zicatela for the surfers, with far too strong an undertow for swimming in safety. The beach is famous for its giant Pacific waves that crash to shore. Surfing events like the World Surfing Leagues Puerto Escondido Challenge are held in Puerto, and waves come in at 6-15 feet during peak season.

The Encyclopedia of Surfing describes it better than I can:

savage Mexican beachbreak tube located on the northern tip of the Gulf of Tehuantepec, in the state of Oaxaca often called the Mexican Pipeline, and universally agreed to be the worlds gnarliest sand-bottom wave. Some people love it, local ace Coco Nogales said of Puerto in 2011. Some people get pounded, turn around, head for home and never come back.

La Punta de Zicatela

Playa Carrizalillo

Other Nearby Beaches like Mazunte, Zipolite, and more.

How To Get Around Puerto Escondido

To get around Puerto Escondido, youll likely use a combination of taxis and local public transportation. Getting a taxi from the airport to town should cost around 40-50 pesos , or about 70 if headed to Punta Zicatela. Taxi rides within town only cost 30-35 pesos .

For public transportation in Puerto Escondido, you can choose between colectivos , local buses, and camionetas . These all run from sunrise till around 8:30 PM and only cost 8 pesos each.

To visit points further outside of town, you can try to hire a driver for the day or just rent a car.

Experience A Baby Turtle Release

Another popular activity in Puerto Escondido is releasing baby sea turtles back into the water. If there was a hatching that morning, you can go and release some of the adorable baby turtles in the evening.

The sea turtles only lay eggs between late October and May. Many hotels in Puerto Escondido organize their own baby turtle releases, so ask around when you get to town. Alternatively, you can just go to the baby turtle release centre on Bacocho Beach.

Where Should I Stay In Puerto Escondido

Cabanas Buena Onda. Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca. México

The main areas to stay include the tourist areas of Puerto Escondido itself along the main surf zone at Playa Zicatela more rustic La Punta, 3km further south at the far end of Zicatela and the more residential area of Rinconada, west of the city center, closer to the smaller beaches hemmed in by cliffs. We prefer the tranquility and beaches of Rinconada, but surfers will want to stay closer to the action in Zicatela.

Our favorites in the center include Hotel Paraíso Escondido at Unión 10, with fine views and great facilities, and the budget Paziflora Hostel at Primera Sur 309, run by an incredibly friendly family.

In Zicatela we like Hotel Casa Dan at Jacarandas 14, which has spacious rooms with kitchens, and Hotel Tabachin del Puerto at Del Morro 4, featuring a series of beautifully furnished self-catering apartments.

In and around Rinconada our favorite hotel is quirky boutique Quinta Lili at Cangrejos 104, with the luxurious Casa de los Ángeles at Zaachila 9 a close second.

Surfers should check out locally-run website Central Surf TV, Puerto Surf and the Oasis Spanish & Surf School, which offers surfing lessons and Spanish classes. Skydive Puerto Escondido offers incredible parachute jumps right over Puerto Escondidos beaches. Puerto Food Tours is a fun way to see the city, with walking tours focused on local food and snacks.

Best Budget Hostel In La Punta: Casa Punta

Casa Punta is up there with some of the best-reviewed hostels in Puerto Escondido, for a few reasons: its super friendly staff, location , clean common areas, and lively, social common areas. . If youre looking for an affordable, fun spot near La Punta and Playa Zicatela, look no further.

The only catch: this probably isnt the place to stay if you know youll need strong wifi. For that, try Casa Losodeli or another stay in the town center.

Take Part In A Local Festival

Originally attracting visitors during the low season, the Fiestas de Noviembre has grown into a month-long celebration with tons of different events. Theres a fishing tournament, surfing competitions, beauty pageants, concerts, a food festival and so much more.

Travelling to Puerto Escondido in November is the perfect way to avoid the larger crowds that start arriving the next month. The festivities go on all month, so youll never be bored if you travel there in November.
