Where To Stay In Rome For A Quiet City Getaway: Prati

Best Rome Travel Guide | Places To Visit In Rome | Things To Do In Rome | Ancient Rome | Tripoto

Best for: Travellers that want to stay near The Vatican City and in a quiet residential neighbourhood, away from the tourist chaos.

The Vatican Cityis one of the most popular locations in Italy and is the home of the Pope. Its also famous for being the home of the Sistine Chapel, St Peters Basilica, and the Vatican Museums.

Situated directly next to it it is the elegant and calm neighbourhood of Prati. If you plan on making Vatican City the centre of your visit to Rome, then I suggest staying here.

Bordering the Tiber Rivers west bank, Prati is best-known for its wide avenues, sophisticated buildings and Italian charm.

It has one of the best nightlife scenes in Rome, and along its avenues, youll find alfresco wine bars, cocktail lounges, and fine dining restaurants.

Its a great place to stay if youre looking for a quiet city getaway, away from the big tourist crowds. While obviously the area closer to Vatican City can get very busy, the other parts of this neighbourhood have a more residential and local feel.

Check Out The Appia Antica

Theres an old saying, all roads lead to Rome.

Well this is true for this sightseeing trip!

Appia Antica was exactly the road that connected ancient Rome to the rest of their civilization, and ultimately, the rest of Italy.

However, this road doesnt lead to anywhere anymore, but it is an interesting spot to stroll around and pretend like youre either a part of a wealthy family traveling to faraway lands, or a peasant guiding their cattle back. Either way, its like stepping back in time!

Travel Insurance For Rome

A lot of people think travel insurance is an unnecessary expense thats far from the truth. Travel insurance is vital. Its saved Kate hundreds of dollars and for one of her friends, who slipped and broke her foot while traveling in Italy, her travel insurance bought her a business class ticket home and saved her thousands of dollars.

If you get pickpocketed on Rome metro, travel insurance will refund you what you lost.

If you slip on the Spanish Steps and break your ankle, travel insurance will refund your medical costs and get you home for free.

If you get appendicitis while in Rome, travel insurance will cover your medical costs.

If an immediate family member dies while youre in Italy, travel insurance will help you get home immediately.

These are unpleasant things to think about, but its so important to be prepared for the worst.

AdventurousKate.com uses and recommends World Nomads Travel Insurance. Theyre a great fit for almost every traveler. Take a look at their policies before you buy to make sure theyre right for you.

Where To Stay In Rome For Couples: Trastevere

Best for: Couples, food lovers, and travellers looking for a unique neighbourhood close to the historic centre.

Trastevere is one of the best neighbourhoods to stay in Rome. When translated, its name means Beyond the Tiber, as it is located along the west bank of the Tiber River.

Trastevere is a charming neighbourhood, characterised by narrow cobbled streets and small piazzas, with a bohemian feel to it. This neighbourhood is filled with great restaurants, bars, and local eateries.

From your accommodation in Trastevere you can easily walk around the quaint cobbled streets of the neighbourhood, joining the locals for aperitivos and drinks in the streets, enjoying the Bella Vita that many Italian quotes talk about.

With its uniquely Roman vibe, its also a very romantic place to stay for couples. If youre looking for a Roman neighbourhood with a buzzing nightlife scene, I recommend checking out Trastevere.

Castro Pretorio & Esquilino District: Romes Central Transportation Hub

The best area to stay in Rome for business travellers, budget tourists and day-trippers

This is a prime option for where to stay in Rome if youre in town only for a night or plan to explore the citys surroundings. This bustling multicultural neighborhood is home to the Termini station, which offers easy access to a variety of trains, buses and the shuttle to Fiumicino airport.

Although the areas around train stations tend to lack charm, Roma Termini/Esquilino has found its major draw in food. The artisanal stalls of Mercato Centrale Roma sell all sorts of delicacies, while the Esquilino Market is one of Romes most fascinating markets.

This area is generally quieter than the historic center, but all the best sights are within walking distance or easy to reach by metro.

Roma Termini / Esquilino

Romes central station Roma Termini is one of the busiest in Europe and you will find many hotels in this area. Like most station districts however, proximity to transport equates to a lack of charm. This is a useful area to stay if you have only one night in Rome and need to access the train station early in the morning or late at night. Youll also find the most budget options here. If youre traveling solo or as a family and want to explore at night this probably isnt the area for you as it has a reputation for being a little seedy.

The sights of the historic center are within walking distance of Rome Termini. You can reach the Trevi fountain in around 15 minutes and the Colosseum in just over 20 minutes. However getting to the Vatican is quickest by Metro or bus. There are stops at the Vittorio Emanuele and Termini stations.

When you get hungry there are a number of decent eateries inside the station itself at Mercato Centrale an upscale food court. For your mandatory pizza fix head to nearby Forno Roscioli Pietro or for pasta, the cacio e pepe Trattoria Da Danilo is as good as it gets.

Pantheon: Best Location For First

The best places to visit in Rome | Condé Nast Traveller

Located between Trevi, Navona, Spagna & the Imperial Forum, the Pantheon Quarter is perfect for those who want to stay close to the best attractions in Rome.

Why is this the best area to stay in Rome:

  • Very central location
  • SantIgnazio di Loyola
  • Great area for walking

Located around 1.3 km east of Piazza Navona, the Pantheon Quarter is one of the best neighbourhoods to stay in Rome.

Its most important monument, the Pantheon, is one of the most visited tourist sights in Rome. This former Roman temple, located on Piazza della Rotonda and originally dedicated to all the gods was later turned into a Catholic church. It is one of the best-preserved examples of ancient Roman buildings and, almost two millennia after it was built, still has the worlds largest unreinforced concrete dome.

Around the temple, youll find other Roman attractions, such as SantIgnazio di Loyola church, Basilica di Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, the National Roman Museum Palazzo Altemps, Tempio di Adriano and Piazza Colonna.

This quarter is a great starting point for those who like to discover the city on foot, as the ancient Imperial Forums, the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps are easily accessible.

Monti: Hip Neighborhood Near The Colosseum

Monti is the neighborhood immediately to the northeast of the Colosseum, which violates my rule of not staying right next to tourist attractions but its legitimately a cool place to stay.

Its hip and happening, with plenty of restaurants and bars lining the streets, and its conveniently located near the Colosseum and Forum, which youll probably be stopping by on your trip. Its well-connected via public transportation if youre heading out to other parts of Rome to do some exploring.

Pros and Cons of Staying in Monti

Pros of Monti:

  • Its Central. If you choose to stay in Monti, youll be well positioned between the main train station , the Centro Storico, and the Colosseum and Forum. Its a convenient location, and its well connected via the metro if you need to go elsewhere.
  • Restaurants and Bars Galore. Monti, which has made the transition from up-and-coming / hipster to flat out trendy over the past decade, is full of bars and restaurants of all kinds. In particular, look around the Chiesa di Santa Maria ai Monti along via Urbana and the surrounding area for some of the best food and drinks in Rome.

Where To Stay In Rome For Budget Travellers: Roma Termini And San Lorenzo

Best for: Budget travellers who want to be close to all the main attractions.

If youre travelling on a budget or dont plan to stay in Rome too long, then I recommend staying in one of these areas.

If youre speeding through your Italy itinerary, keen to tick off all the main sights from your Italy bucket list, this central location will be very handy for you!

While Termini and San Lorenzo arent among the most glamorous areas to stay in Rome, they have great affordable accommodation options.

The Trevi Fountain in Rome, Italy

Roma Termini is the main train station in Rome, and is an excellent base for reaching some of the citys iconic sights.

The Trevi Fountain and other attractions are all within walking distance from Termini. However, being so close to Romes main train station, its obviously not a very fancy area and has a reputation for being dangerous.

San Lorenzo is also very close to the train station, but has more character and is less sketchy. Its also right next to Università la Sapienza di Roma, so youll find lots of students hitting the local bars and restaurants.

This neighbourhood is a great place to stay if you want to visit Rome without breaking the bank, but also experience a bit of the local student nightlife in Rome.

Dont have time to read the entire guide? Heres a quick summary.

  • If its your first time in Rome, you cant go wrong with the Centro Storico. Stay at Casa Pietra or Coronari Palace.
  • If youre looking for a slightly different experience, look at Monti, a hip part of Rome thats near the Colosseum and Forum, and is packed full of bars, restaurants, cafes, and more. Its a good central location, and generally feels much younger than, say, the Centro Storico.
