Places To Stay In San Sebastian Spain

Lunch In The Trendy Gros Neighborhood

San Sebastian, a must-visit place in Spain

After Monte Igueldo, take a cab over to the other side of San Sebastian to visit the hip and trendy neighborhood of Gros, located near Zurriola beach.

Stroll along the Playa Gros where you can watch local surfers catch waves. Further inland, stroll through the streets of this young neighborhood and enjoy the trendy boutiques and leafy squares.

Dinner tonight is at one of the best restaurants in the world, so as you decide where to eat in Gros, you may want to go lighter on lunch today. But in a city like San Sebastian where every bite is more delicious than the next, that can be hard to do.

Londres Y De Inglaterra City Centre

Start your day by leaning on your balcony, looking out across the perfect crescent of La Concha bay at this landmark hotel, and all will feel right in your world, believe me. Smart but not overly swanky, the Londres y de Inglaterra is a real institution in the city and the bar is a popular place to meet. The chintz has been well and truly chucked in the revamped rooms, where soothing elegance is now the order of the day. The newest and fanciest are on the seventh floor, with terraces big enough for sunbeds. You really get the full-on San Sebastián experience here, with everything within pleasant walking distance.

Centro Where To Stay In San Sebastian On A Budget

Centro is the new city centre of San Sebastian and is located right next to the old town. Its a true heaven for shopping lovers, as numerous Spanish and international brands have set up shop in the area. The main shopping street is the Avenida de la Libertad.

The new city hall can be found in Centro around the Alderdi Eder park. Facing the La Concha bay, these gardens are an iconic picture of San Sebastian. Beautiful flowerbeds have been laid out under the tamaris. If you are coming to the area with kids, make sure to take them to the carousel built in Belle Epoque style.

The religious landmark of San Sebastian, the Buen Pastor Cathedral, is also located in Centro. It was inaugurated in 1897 and its architecture was inspired by medieval churches of France and Germany. Standing 75 metres high, the cathedral is the tallest building in San Sebastian.

Around The Private Apartment In San Sebastin

San Sebastian, Spain

From your private apartment in San Sebastián you can start off on wonderful excursions to the spectacular beaches and bizarre cliffs. If you drive inland, you will have a fantastic view of the bay of La Concha and San Sebastián. You might even recognize one of the many buildings you have already seen at close range. You should definitely look at the pilgrimage church La Antigua, which is located in Zumarraga or, in Azpeitia, the Loiola Basilica. In contrast, the shrine of Arantzazu, which was reconstructed after many fires and reopened in 1955, seems somewhat more avant-garde. Reserve enough time for a trip to the biggest city of the Basque Country, or book an Apartment in Bilbao, if you prefer to spend several days there.

La Concha Best Area In San Sebastian For Families

La Concha is the most iconic neighbourhood in San Sebastian. Its most famous for its white sand beach, deemed to be one of the most beautiful urban beaches in Europe. As such, it is a great neighbourhood for families to stay as there are plenty of activities available and a large choice of hotels and restaurants in the area.

From La Concha, you can also take a trip to Santa Clara, a small island located just off the coast of San Sebastian. Santa Clara island has its own little beach, nice cafés overlooking the sea, and a pleasant walk to the lighthouse.

For a more grown-up and relaxing activity, you could spend the day at La Perla spa, the nicest of its kind in San Sebastian. There, you can get a massage, relax in the different pools, and have a nice meal in a calming environment.

San Sebastian City Hall

Like the cathedral, San Sebastian City Hall is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. Its located inside a former casino that was closed after a countrywide ban on gambling in 1924.

Im not sure if you can go inside but the city hall is located in the Centro district near La Concha Beach. I didnt go close enough to notice but on the exterior walls of the building are bullet holes from the Spanish Civil War.

Best Hotels In San Sebastin

Annie Bennett

Is there anything not to love about San Sebastián? The seaside city in the Basque Country is one of the best places to eat in Spain, with its impressive range of Michelin stars and dozens of bars with counters piled high with tempting pintxos.

Add to that the spectacular beaches, the elegant promenade, some fascinating museums and a happy mix of designer, independent and high street shops, and youve got pretty much the perfect destination for a quick, restorative jaunt.

The choice of accommodation is impressive too, with luxury hotels that exude belle époque splendour, boutique hotels with sleek design and small, characterful places hidden away in the old town. While San Sebastián in summer is glorious, rates at even modest hotels can be eye-wateringly high and there is a much wider range of prices throughout the year than in other Spanish cities somewhere that charges 80 a night in February might be asking 250 in August. If you are more interested in the gastronomic and cultural delights beyond the beach, go in winter, when this beguiling city has a different but equally seductive charm.

Whether you want to go traditional, minimalist or no frills, youll find the perfect hotel for your taste and budget in sensual San Sebastián.

Playa De Ondarreta& monte Igueldo

Tucked away in the western corner of La Concha bay is Ondarreta Beach, which leads round to Mount Igueldo and its hair-raising funicular railway. The beach itself is pleasant enough essentially an extension of La Concha itself but its position on the bay means it gets a little more surf. In general, its family-friendly, with umbrellas and loungers for hire and a beautifully landscaped park promenade. Its worth walking the whole way from the Miramar Palace gardens, around the base of Mount Igueldo, and to the thrilling Peine del Mar sculpture by Eduardo Chillida to get to know the neighborhood. No one coming to this neck of the woods should miss a trip up Monte Igueldo on the precipitous funicular railway, even if youre not interested in the kitsch amusement park at the top. The century-old transportation and the views from the top should be experienced.

San Sebastian Bilbao Stay

10 reasons to visit Basque Country

San Sebastian to Bilbao. Have some questions…thanks.

1) Is it gonna be too cold? Do I need to bring thick jackets or a light windbreaker is fine? Since this route will be mainly done in the coastline I’m worried that it might be quite chilly.

2) How many days would be ideal to stay in San Sebastian and Bilbao?

3) What is a good location to stay in both of these areas?

Mara Cristina City Centre

The grande dame of San Sebastián hotels has been a glamorous meeting place for more than a century but there is no fusty fussiness here. Contemporary classic design in muted mauves and taupes complements the belle époque architecture of the huge honey-coloured building on the Urumea river in the city centre. Everything is lavish and luxurious here, from breakfast to late-night gin and tonics in the rather-too-comfortable Dry Bar. Get into the gastronomic groove at Mimo, where you can learn how to make your own pintxos and buy local specialities to take home.

Best Place To Stay Between San Sebastin And Madrid

Hi! I will be next week in San Sebastián. I have to be in the airport on Wednesday and was thinking in staying one day in a city between these two places. I already went from Madrid to San Sebastián through Segovia and that side, so I was looking for something more to the east, such as Logroño, Zaragoza etc) small old villages would be great. Thank you very much!!

My wifes hometown of Tudela is in Fiesta next week but finding a hotel room might be hard. There are hotels next to the freeway on the road to Castejon and Alfaro. You could pop into Tudela to experience a traditional Fiesta.

I’d second Tudela as a pretty little town to stay the night. Soria is meant to be nice, but haven’t been there personally, so can’t recommend it in that way!

Bilbao Or San Sebastian: Lodging

Generally speaking, hotels are cheaper in Bilbao than in San Sebastián.

The best areas to stay in Bilbao are the Old Town , where most of the landmarks and touristic action is, Bilbao la Vieja and San Frantzisko, two trendy and artsy neighborhoods, and Indautxu, the shopping and financial district .

In San Sebastian, the best areas area Parte Vieja , Gros, Centro, La Concha, and Antiguo all located around the bay.

Here are two often recommended hotels in Bilbao:

  • Hotel Barceló Nervión: centrally located, on the river. Walls a bit thin, great breakfast.
  • Abando hotel: nice hotel, located in the new town across the river from the old town, easy access to everything, shops around it.
