Sittin Pretty In Spa City
The Adelphi Hotel is a Win, Place, and Show.
At a little past 3 p.m. on May 1, 1878, John Morrissey Irish immigrant, Troy resident, bareknuckle boxer of fearsome repute, proponent-turned-opponent of Tammany Hall, congressman, and co-founder of the Saratoga Race Course was delivered a newspaper in his room at The Adelphi Hotel.
Four hours later, he passed away, and although he was pronounced dead in his room, legend has it the tour-de-force keeled over at the bar, drink in hand.
No wonder the folks at Richbell Capital named The Adelphis renovated tavern Morrisseys Lounge.
The dark wood tavern is just part of a four-year, $24 million renovation of Saratogas last remaining Victorian-era hotel. As all of its contemporaries either burned or closed down in the ensuing 142 years, The Adelphi continued to stand over Broadway as horse and buggies turned to Model Ts, as pickups turned to hybrids.
Over the decades, the hotel slimmed down from its original 150 rooms to its current 32 rooms and 12 suites, which allow guests to spread out in a lounge area, a bedroom, and a bathroom.
Outfitted with a sleek royal blue and white color scheme, the design blends Victorian aesthetics with modern amenities, including suites equipped with smart speakers, high-back leather chairs, rainfall showers, and heated towel racks and toilet seats.
In warmer months, guests can enjoy the wine and beer garden on the lawn, as well as the terrace overlooking the chatter below.

Gideon Putnam Spa And Resort
Finally, we cant overlook the venerable 124-room, 80-year-old Gideon Putnam Spa and Resort . Surrounded by a golf course, repurposed classic spa bathhouses, and lots of Adirondack chairs, this hotel is located in Saratoga Spa State Park, a short drive from downtown.
On our most recent long weekend in Saratoga Springs, we toured the main level of this grand lodge, marveling at its wonderful public rooms with large fireplaces and its lovely grounds. We wished wed been invited to a wedding or family reunion there just to soak up the luxurious feeling of yesteryear.
The parks Victorian-era swimming pool is for Gideon Putnam guests and open to the public, as well.
Well, make that a very updated yesteryear. We learned that The Gideon Putnam suffered a catastrophic water-main break in winter 2018, but that incident had the silver lining of allowing the historic hotel to close long enough to modernize and freshen its rooms, making them more accessible while keeping the mid-century styling.
The grand Gideon Putnam, located in Saratoga Spa State Park.
Summer is Saratogas prime season, of course, but The Gideon Putnam makes the most of cooler seasons by serving a renowned Thanksgiving Grand Buffet and offering warm mineral baths at the Roosevelt Baths & Spa, which are still operating.

Relax At Browns Beach

Browns Beach is the perfect place to spend a warm afternoon in upstate New York. One of the only public swimming spots on Saratoga Lake, Browns Beach welcomes visitors from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
In addition to swimming, Browns Beach is a great location to learn water sports like kayaking, canoeing, or paddle boarding. The snack bar has a selection of summer staples like hot dogs and ice cream, so you dont even have to leave the beach.
If you want something a little more substantial, just a few feet away, Dock Browns Lakeside Tavern has great burgers, salads, and cocktails. We loved kicking back on their porch at sunset.

See A Show At Saratoga Performing Arts Center
Its hard to describe the magic of Saratoga Performing Arts Center , but we loved every moment of the four shows we had the chance to see. On the grounds of Saratoga Spa State Park, performances at SPAC highlight just about every musical genre you could imagine. There is classical music plus jazz, pop, rock, and other types of music from around the world.
For decades, SPAC has been the summer home of the New York City Ballet and the Philadelphia Orchestra, which gives visitors a chance to see a number of world-class performances throughout the summer. Whether its a ballet by Balanchine or the Orchestra performing live to a showing of Indiana Jones or E.T., the options are extensive. On the other end of the musical spectrum, favorites like Phish and Dave Matthews pack the amphitheater and lawn of the lovely outdoor venue, too.
With over 50 performance seasons under its belt, SPAC is also constantly reinventing itself with additions like a lively jazz bar under the summer stars and other engaging performances that actually bring the audience on stage with artists.

Eclectic Shopping And Dining
While my husband and I have sampled many of the above attractions , Saratogas big weekend draw for us has been its leisurely window-shopping and dining options.
The commercial part of Broadway offers a wide range of restaurants, boutiques, wine bars, brewpubs, coffeehouses, art galleries, bookstores, and yes, a souvenir shop or two. Years ago, Warren bought me my first keeper necklace, made by one of 40 featured artists featured at the handmade jewelry boutique Silverado. We were happy to notice recently that the shop is still going strong years later.
New restaurants we recently enjoyed on Broadway include a European-flavored brunch at Merc Kitchen and Bar and the fresh Mexican food of Cantina. Just off Broadway are Seneca, with its creatively rustic American cuisine from a CIA-trained chef, and Tatu Tacos & Tequila, an arrestingly-designed loft-style restaurant featuring Mayan-inspired craft tacos and drinks dont miss the churro waffle and ice cream dessert.

See The Mineral Springs At Spa State Park
Outside of the racetrack, the city is best known for the natural springs that dot its landscape, making a tour of them one of the best things to do in Saratoga Springs. Originally used by Native Americans as far back as the 1600s, the springs are known for their restorative properties both in drinking and in bathing. Saratoga Spa State Park is the best place to explore the areas offerings today.
A tour of the springs will take you to about half of the dozen mostly carbonated springs that still flow in the park. Each has a unique mineral content, and, thus, its own flavor, so no two taste the same. Thank goodness for that, because some were definitely not delicious, while others could easily substitute for standard bottled water, only fresher.
While you can locate the springs on a self-guided walk, we opted for an expert guided tour.
We visited the high-iron Polaris and the replenished spring, Tallulah, that leaves a trail of colored minerals along the hill slope. We also stopped by the Geyser Island spouter with its massive 86-year-old tufa mineral deposits and sampled several other springs. Theres no better way to get a sense for these cool natural features than seeing the Saratoga mineral springs up close.

Buy A Book At The Northshire Bookstore
The Northshire Bookstore is my favorite bookstore in all of New England. The original bookstore is located in Manchester, VT, and was built in 1976.
They recently built another store in downtown Saratoga that is a smaller version of the VT store but is still just as worth visiting!
The entire upstairs is filled with just childrens books, so this is a very family-friendly bookstore. One of the unique kid-friendly activities in Saratoga Springs!
If youre lucky, there may even be an author event being held. Be sure to check the Northshire Bookstore website to stay up to date on events offered.
Be sure to buy a book while youre there and support local bookstores!
