Along Northern California’s wandering Highway 1, a nostalgic wayfinder signals, in can’t-miss-it oversize Helvetica font, the turn-off for the newly transformed Sea Ranch Lodge. Crested atop a 53-acre rolling meadow that softly descends to the jagged coastal shelf these parts are famous for, the 1964 building was recently restored by Seattle-based architecture studio Mithun. The resort in Sea Ranch, California reopened to the public last fall after a three-year closure.
“The Lodge is a historic building, and one that a lot of people care about, so we tried to have the lightest touch possible, in a way that people would almost not notice a change,” says architect Sade Borghei, whose intent recalls the original Sea Ranch founders’ north star for the midcentury bluff-top enclave: “Living lightly on the land.”
This ideology, often attributed to the area’s Indigenous Pomo nation, shaped the iconic design of The Sea Ranch . Buildings are clad in weathered, local redwood that ultimately blends into the primeval landscape, while sloped shed-style roofs nod to both the naturally aerodynamic cypress hedgerows and the area’s broad-shouldered agricultural buildings. There’s even a historic livery stable from the 1870s, located just downhill from the Lodge, a relic from the 10-mile-long, 7,000-acre precipice’s former life as a livestock ranch and timber operation.

We are going to Sea Ranch for a wedding in September. We have rented a house there.
We will take two days to drive there from Pasadena, CA. Can you suggest the best route? We understand that Big Sur is impassable now.
We will stay over night somewhere on the way. Can you recommend a place to stop for the night – a place to stay, a restaurant?
Is there a market nearby or should we shop before we drive in?

I would take Highway 101 and then transition to Highway 1 after the Golden Gate bridge and drive through Point Reyes on to

There are no markets in Sea Ranch or before it, from Jenner on, and that is just a smallish grocery store. The nearest ones are in the town of Gualala, which is north of Sea Ranch. Depending upon where your rental house is, it could be anywhere from two or three to ten miles.
Highway 1 after the GG Bridge goes inland at Point Reyes until Bodega Bay. Part of it, near Stinson Beach, I believe, was closed due to storm damage repair. I do not know the current status.
If you want to avoid this part, go 33 miles on Hwy 101 north to Petaluma, take the East Washington exit, go straight through town and you will be on the Bodega Hwy to Bodega Bay. Nice drive through pastoral dairies and farms. It will also save you a little time.

Theres a community pool for residents at Sea Ranch but we didnt end up going because we were too cold. Theres a big golf course there too none of us golf but I imagine it must be one of the most beautiful places to do it! We made lunch and then headed to Salt Point State Park for a walk around the trails. The wildflowers were in full bloom when we were there, and some of the ice plants looked like bright-colored shaggy carpet all over the hillside .

The Sea Ranch Community Is Wonderful
The Sea Ranch community is wonderful. Beautiful homes, walking trails along the Pacific coast line and wildlife watching opportunities abound. Beach access just steps away and during our stay we were typically the only people on the beach. We look forward to returning soon. Highly recommended. Take Stewarts Pt/ Skaggs Canyon Road to Geyserville area for winery tours. One of the most scenic US drives I’ve ever been on. Beautiful!
Things To Do In Sea Ranch
On the way to Sea Ranch
There are so many gems to find along the way to Sea Ranch. If youre coming from the south or the east, I have a few favorites that I think youll love. furthest south, one of my favorites is Point Reyes. I would even suggest a night or two there before Sea Ranch to make a road trip of it. While in the area, if youre looking for a bite to eat, Id suggest Nicks Cove or The Marshall Store for the best seafood.
As you make your way through, you may take the road that passes out to Bodega Bay. Two pitstops that I adore are Bodega Bay Oyster Company for fresh oysters and Wild Flour for fresh bread. Both are easy pitstops along the way. And if you have a sweet tooth, Valley Ford Creamery has some wonderful soft serve. In Bodega itself, Spud Point is a classic for Dungeness crab rolls my goodness these are delicious. I have a ton more on this section of the coast on this guide.
Further north, Cafe Aquatica in Jenner is lovely for lunch and they often have live music. If youre looking to rent kayaks and go up the river, Jenner is the spot to do it. And as you make your way more north, Coastal Kitchen at Timber Cove Resort is another favorite spot for food.
