Places To Stay In Ullapool Scotland

Wick Brora Helmsdale Dornoch & Tain

DAY 2 | North Coast 500 | Gairloch to Ullapool | Scotland NC500 Road Trip Vlog

After John O’Groats, the sweeping eastern coast section of the North Coast 500 sees a return to more standard road conditions, where you can eat up the 116.6 miles from Wick to Inverness pretty quickly. It also brings a choice with it: continue onward to Inverness in a single day, or choose to slow down and stay for a night or two somewhere along the way. With a the the majority of the routes stunning castle hotels , one of the finest whisky selections in Scotland, two world-famous distilleries, and a handful of historic coastal villages , and some of the best accommodation on the North Coast 500 route, there’s an abundance of incentive to not rush back. Indeed, it would be more memorable to toast your final night of the North Coast 500 somewhere along this section, rather than spend it back in Inverness

Welcome To Ullapool Scotland

Ullapool is a picturesque fishing village. Add that to the range of facilities and cultural activities available and you have the perfect Highland holiday. Ullapool has restaurants, shops, cafes, bars, live entertainment, a museum & library, sea fishing, loch fishing, deer stalking, car hire & cycle hire, ferry to Stornoway and boat cruises. Ullapool is an ideal base from which to explore Wester Ross and the Highlands of Scotland. Our little village is now becoming well known for its Music Festivals. Take a vacation to coincide with one. The Loopallu Music Festival sees our town almost double in population and the Ullapool Guitar Festival showcases some of the biggest guitar names around with entertainment and workshops laid on for all the family.

To the west of Ullapool is the Inverpolly National Nature Reserve – a home to pine martens, wildcats, buzzards and golden eagles. Look out for the unique shape of Stac Pollaidh , one of the most photographed hills in this area.

South from Ullapool are attractions such as Leckmelm Shrubbery and Arboretum, Lael Forest Garden, and the dizzying depths of Corrieshalloch Gorge and the Falls of Measach. Along the road to Poolewe are great views out to sea over golden beaches and green, rocky islands, and famous Inverewe Garden, overlooking Loch Ewe.

Our Favourite: Dunvegan House

This is where we have stayed the last five years in Ullapool. The house is brilliant with the comfiest bed I have ever slept in seriously!

Dunvegan House is fully furnished and includes a longe, dining room and big kitchen, equipped with all the utensils you would need for cooking a well-earned meal after a day spent on the beach.

3 bedrooms, powerful showers, a massive garden and right across from the seafood shack, near the heart of the town.

Stunning Location With View Of Loch And Mountains And Ferry

Best places to stay in Ullapool, United Kingdom

Stunning location with view of loch and mountains and ferry. Limited good restaurants and places to stay for the number of holiday makers. Would avoid Mondays as quite a few places seem to be closed.Enjoyed Seashack and Deli on the same road – both very good.Would avoid the Ferry Boat Inn as a place to stay. Easy to walk about.

How Do I Get Around Ullapool

Trains from London to Inverness via Edinburgh take about 8 hours. Scottish Citylink bus services run between Inverness and Ullapool, taking about 2 hours. Theres no direct rail service to the village, so the best way to get here is by car. The nearest airport is Inverness Airport , from where you can hire a car or get a taxi or ride-hailing service for the 1.5-hour journey into town.

The village of Ullapool is pedestrian-friendly, with local taxis available. Youll need your own car if you plan on venturing out hillwalking or exploring the more remote areas of the Highlands. If youd like to tour nearby islands, be sure to check ferry timetables beforehand, as service is limited during the winter.

Best Place To Stay In Ullapool

We really enjoyed our stay at Ardlair B& B. The rooms are so spacious, well-equipped and nice-looking so I felt like staying in a hotel. The beds were very comfortable and the rooms clean and had an en-suite bathroom. Our host Ayesha was very friendly and helpful. She recommended places for dinner and provided us with a map of the village. The view from the place over the loch is stunning. Ayesha does not serve breakfast at that time of the year which was not a probably since we had dishes and cutlery in our room for preparing our own breakfast. Additionally, there was a list of places for breakfast in our room as well .Unfortunately, there was a person in room 2 who was snoring so load that I could hear it in room 3. This was disturbing at first but became better later on.Be careful when approaching the B& B from the south: There is a very similar looking house on the right of Ardlair B& B which was used as a B& B before and still has a sign outside. We were wrong first but the elderly lady living in the former B& B showed us how to get to Ardlair.More

Bone Caves Of Inchnadamph

DAY 3 | North Coast 500 | Ullapool to Durness | Scotland NC500 Road Trip Vlog

Thirty minutes northeast of Ullapool in Inchnadamph, youll find the dramatic Bone Caves. The limestone caves are set into a high cliff, and when they were excavated in the late 1880s, geologists discovered the bones of bears, reindeer, badgers, and wildcats, dating back more than 45,000 years. Its speculated that the caves formed when glaciers that once made up the terrain retreated, washing the bones into these pockets in the cliffs. Youll pass a waterfall and cross a series of stepping stones along the trail to get to the caves.

Riverside is a charming white building on the top of a hill. The room was clean and warm with en suite, the bed so comfortable that one did not want to get up in the morning but if you wanted breakfast then you had to be down stairs in the dining room between 8 & 9am. Breakfast can be continental or full Scottish. Fresh made coffee tops it off beautifully. Charlie, the proprietor, has so much local knowledge that you dont need to buy guide books. If it had not been for him, we would never have discovered many of the delights of the north eastern coast of Scotland. We even go to see the Keel Tree being lit up in readiness for the Christmas lights. Wonderful! We will be back one day.
