Had high expectations of staying after booking online. Was disappointed. Stayed a week ago and upon entering my room there was a strong smell of cigarettes. I used the phone and requested a room change, which was handled promptly and I appreciated. My new room did not have the cigarette smell. Hotel does feel tired though and needs an upgrade. Nothing special. I also felt very disconnected from rest of the hotel and didn’t really understand even where the beach was that is advertised on thier website as “200 steps” from the hotel. I never even saw the beach or ocean. Will stay elsehwhere in the future.

Secret Spots In Ventura The Locals Would Rather Keep To Themselves

Places to Stay

Photo: Visit Ventura

It just so happens that despite the beach being half a mile away, many Venturans choose to sit beneath a straw canopy and brave the tsunami warnings at VenTiki Lounge & Lanai on Main Street for a little taste of island life.

First, forget everything you thought you knew about Tiki culture. VenTikis cocktails arent your diabetes-in-a-highball-glass kind of beverage. This place prides itself on cultivating classic, legit-as-you-can-get cocktails created by the folks who brought the island culture stateside back in the 1930s. No, there arent any singing birds, but thunder and lightning will greet you if youre around on Tsunami Tuesdays.

I thought I already gave a raving review but I see that I havent yet, so here goes:This place is wonderful! We sold our home so needed a place to stay until we moved. unfortunately we picked a few other motels in ventura until we found this gem! Our only regret was that we didnt discover it sooner. The rooms are large and very clean. The family running it is so helpful and kind, which means a lot. Next time we are in town, we will stay there and we highly recommend it!

I Went To Visit My Mom And To Do Some Scuba Diving In

I went to visit my Mom, and to do some SCUBA diving in Channel Islands National Park. Ventura is my hometown, and the degradation of the marine environment over fifty years is horrifying. Kelp forests used to extend a mile out from the islands. Now there is a small fringe of sick and dying kelp. No mussels on the rocks and pilings where they used to cover the surfaces. Scientists say if we don’t radically reform our society humans will be extinct by 2050. 30 years survival for our species is wildly overoptimistic in the opinion of this marine ecologist,

Ventura Avenue And Its Landmark Mexican Food

Photo: Brent Hofacker/Shutterstock

Youre spoiled for choice when it comes to Mexican food in Ventura. Its in our blood, after all, and while many restaurants are fine enough, Venturans go to the Avenue for the best in the city.

Ventura Avenue is the citys original drag, stretching from just after the Fairgrounds and heading up toward Ojai. Along the way, countless restaurants and bodegas stand as landmarks. Theres Taqueria Tepatitlan, featuring signature mole dishes on certain nights, not to be missed Taqueria Cuernavaca is what Avenue residents call authentic, where the al pastor is accentuated with sweet pineapple and El Jarocho, a tiny hole-in-the-wall serving up the best ceviche and shrimp cocktails in the county.

The day after New Years Eve is the best for a restaurant crawl along the Avenue, as many shops serve their very own menudo, the crimson hangover cure filled with hominy and tripe. That said, the Avenue is your best friend after any long night out.

The Free Trolley To The Ventura Harbor

Its kind of hard to call it a secret when its promoted by the tourism board, but the Ventura Harbor Trolley isnt just for tourists. While anyone can hop aboard the 1920s-themed trolley, replete with bells, and ride to the Ventura Harbor from downtown, locals use it as responsible transportation for a day at the beach with a bottle of wine or two.

If youre in downtown Ventura, the trolley is a half-hour ride or so to the Harbor, where youll find a handful of eateries, water sports, and a mellow stretch of sand known as Mothers Beach. The protection from the waves provided by the jetties here makes it a great spot for families or visitors with little ones looking to play in the ocean.

Final Thoughts On Where To Stay In Ojai

From spiritual havens and spas to picture-perfect trails, Ojai offers an endless array of options for relaxation, fun, and recreation. Despite its relatively small size, the city can keep you entertained for over a month. I guess thats why the city has banned short-term vacation rentals. However, you should still consider Ojai as a stopover destination on your Californian Roadtrip.

The neighborhoods mentioned in this guide have all the hallmarks of an incredible vacation. If we have to pick one, though, it has to be Downtown or Ojai Village.

With a variety of lodging options, Downtown certainly has an accommodation that best suits your preference and budget. Whats more, its dotted with authentic shops, restaurants and attractions.

On top of it all, its a walkable neighborhood, which should help reduce your gas expenses.

One Of Our Favorite Beaches Emma Wood

Photo: Kamilo Bustamante for Visit Ventura

Ventura may be known as a sleepy seaside village to outsiders, but in the world of surfing its a superstar factory, birthing the likes of Timmy Curran, Nick Rozsa, and Matt McCabe. Many of these surfers and many of Venturas army of board riders go to Emma Wood State Beach to catch a wave.

In the winter, when the waves are at their best and the temperatures are mild, competition at other beaches can be tough for surfers at Emma Wood, youll see locals flipping and twirling through the air practicing for competitions or just having fun. Farther down the beach is Mondos, a popular destination for beginners and kids alike. Venturans arent overly protective of their beaches and wont make visitors feel unwelcome, but they do enjoy having a place to call home on the water.

Five Great Things To Do In Ventura

California Dream Eaterâs Foodie Road Trip: Ventura to Santa Barbara

Ventura is a destination with a lively downtown that’s undergoing active growth and development. It’s best visited as a day trip unless you plan to go to the Channel Islands or spend a lot of time at the beach. Here are some of the things to do in Ventura County this weekend or even for a quick day trip away from the city:

  • Channel Islands National Park: It’s surprising how many people don’t know about these offshore islands that are so rich in unique species that they could be called California’s Galapagos. It’s easy to visit them by boat on a short day trip, and you might spot a few whales or dolphins on the way.
  • Mission San Buenaventura: Mission San Buenaventura is one of California’s few remaining Spanish missions that were never destroyed and the last mission founded by Father Junipero Serra. It’s right on Main Street in downtown, making it easy to visit if only for a few minutes.
  • Downtown Ventura: There’s more in downtown Ventura than just the mission, everything from second-hand stores and antique shops to restaurants, art galleries, and day spas.
  • Waterfront: Ventura sits right on the Pacific coast, and you can go to the beach here, go boating or windsurfing, build a sandcastle or catch a fish. Use this guide to find your perfect Ventura Beach.
  • Bell Arts Factory: It used to be a mattress factory. In fact, the sign out front still says so, but these days it’s home to some good artist’s studios.
