Places To Stay In West Maui

Best Areas To Stay In Maui

The Best place to stay on Maui, Hawaii | West Maui | Kayla Limage

There are climatic variations for you to consider when deciding where to stay on Maui. It will be sunny and warm but there are some parts that receive more rainfall than others. The northeast is lush because of its rain, falling mostly between November and March inclusive. Nowhere should rain dominate a day, however.

Kula Lodge & Restaurant

UpCountry

One of the very best panoramic views of the elusively gorgeous Island of Maui is from a prime vantage point in Kula, Maui. Lucky for the Kula Lodge and Restaurant, they have the most excellent piece of Upcountry Maui property for the most incredible view of the Valley Isle. Without a doubt, this location is magical. From here, guests can see the most southern part of the South Maui coastline stretch as far as the West Maui.

For years, the Kula Lodge has been a favorite destination for visitors and locals alike. The 5 Chalets are the accommodations provided by the Kula Lodge and are a perfect home-style place to stay for those that crave solace, comfort, and the closest lodging proximity to the Haleakala National Park. The Kula Lodge restaurant seats up to one hundred and fifty guests, with breathtaking views and a unique outdoor seating area that is nestled in a beautiful lush garden. This is a perfect location for a family gathering or wedding party or to stop with the family after watching the sunrise at Haleakala Crater for a delicious breakfast.

A stay at the Kula Lodge is most definitely an experience that will not soon be forgotten. The Upcountry areas of Maui are diverse in topography, rural Maui country culture, and unique offerings. Enjoy the many splendors of the Haleakala National Park, the Alii Kula Lavender Farm or Maui Wine just within a short drive away.

The South Side Of Maui Includes Wailea And Kihei

Wailea has luxury hotels and condos. They are spread out a little more than the luxury hotels and condos on Kaanapali Beach, so some people like the slightly quieter atmosphere, but others dont like the fact that you cant easily walk to all the big hotels and restaurants and shopping centers like you can in Kaanapali. Though, this isnt true of all Wailea resorts. The Grand Wailea, Four Seasons, Andaz, , and many high-end condos are all next to each other There are 3 different luaus all within a few minutes walking distance, but the most popular is the Grand Wailea Luau.

Kihei is north of Wailea. It has numerous large and small condo complexes that are less expensive than staying in Wailea. Many of these do not have air conditioning or daily maid service. And most Kihei condos are across the street from the beach, rather than right on the beach. Kihei tends to be congested with heavy traffic. Kihei does have many family restaurants. But due to the fact that many condos here are less expensive than some in other areas, many people do think that Kihei is the best area to stay in Maui.

This bargain hotel is in the same great location as the Sheraton, right on Kaanapali Beach near Black Rock, but about half the price of the Sheraton because its much older . The pools are not big and fancy like the four hotels listed above, but the Kaanapali Beach Hotel has a well-deserved reputation for wonderful friendly service. It has the most Hawaiian atmosphere and décor of any Maui hotel and even puts on a free hula show every evening. 430 rooms. For photos and more information, click on this link:Kaanapali Beach Hotel

Where to Stay in Maui: The Best Hotels and Resorts in Maui

There is also a paved coastal trail in South Maui.

The South Maui coastal walk is more like a beach to beach walk. You wont be walking along the beach the whole time, but youll still get grand ocean views the whole time!

You can walk from beach to beach to beach following the great coastal sidewalk that is called the Wailea Beach Path!

Or just go for a walk for the sweeping ocean views.

Once again, alongside this paved trail are a number of oceanfront resorts. There are a few that have a beach out in front too.

Kapalua Where To Stay In Maui In An All

West Maui is notorious for its highly developed tourist traps and all-inclusive resorts. And while that comes with some advantages, many visitors who stay in Maui choose to set up camp in Kapalua.

Its location on the west coast means that its in close proximity to some of the islands best beaches, shopping, and restaurants. But the fact that its a less developed stretch of property means that its a little more chill than the surrounding resorts.

Thats not to say that Kapalua isnt willing to offer luxury to those looking for it. Its golf courses are as beautiful as its beaches, and one of the latter has even been named the best beach in the United States by the University of Maryland.

This is still a resort region, and the beating heart of this area is the Kapalua Beach Resort. Its an expansive place to vacation that includes multiple golf courses, over a dozen boutique shops, and a wide variety of restaurants.

But they arent the only resort in town, and they certainly arent the only places to stay. While backpackers might want to carefully consider their budget before settling on a place in Kapalua, its a more affordable option than resorts a little further south.

The more northerly position of Kapalua also means more direct views of the islands most magnificent mountain range.

The Kapalua farmers market is a great place to pick up souvenirs and try authentic local flavors, but its not without its cheap products targeted at tourists.

Lahaina Affordable Accommodation In West Maui

MUST READ: Where To Stay In Maui In 2020

While Kapalua, Kahana, and Kaanapali are all built with the needs of tourists in mind, Lahaina is the place where the people who serve those resort communities live, work, and play.

That makes it one of the ideal places to stay in Maui for those who want more authentic interaction with the people who live where theyre visiting.

The fact that its a legitimate local community means that you wont find as many amenities catered directly to your needs, but you will find more diversity in terms of the experiences you can have. Thats not to say that Lahaina isnt without its tourist areas.

Front Street is the main strip, and this oceanfront road is typically more populated with locals than with visitors.

That said, most of the essentials you could hope to find can be picked up on Front Street, and theres certainly no shortage of fine and delicious dining on the beach.

If you want to get out on the water rather than just stay on the beach, Lahaina might be the place to stay in Maui.

Youll find everything from submarine cruises that allow you to see the ocean floor to snorkeling expeditions that provide a more surface level view of the regions most beautiful and vibrant wildlife.

In terms of sheer positioning, Lahaina is one of the most sensible choices for tourists looking to stay in Maui.

Wailea South Maui Where To Stay In Maui For Couples And Honeymoon

Waileas development in the 1970s was to take advantage of the opportunity that tourism was increasingly providing. Before that, Wailea was just a small fishing village, lying just over 6 miles south of Kihei. The Resort covers 1,500 acres with this location selected because the leeward side of the South Coast is the sunniest part of Maui.

The popular beaches in this area are Polo Beach, Wailea Beach, Makena Beach, Palauea Beach, Poolenalena Beach, and Ulua Beach.

The Community has received awards for its design and the facilities it provides. Golfers can enjoy the courses while restaurants, shopping, and beaches are all features that attract visitors and more than satisfy local property owners. Wailea is certainly an area that satisfies the most discerning of residents and visitors.

You can find organized snorkeling tours where guides know the best places to go. If you are lucky, you may catch sight of a turtle. There is no doubt that swimming with dolphins is a unique experience while kayaking is fun if you prefer to stay above the waves.

The Resort hotels and the golf courses are major employers in Wailea which has a professional management structure to handle all its affairs. The beaches are all public but you can get valet service from a hotel to get you to the beach and provide everything you need for the time you are there. You will find some big hotels like Marriott Wailea, The Grand Wailea, Four Seasons, Andaz.

Where To Stay In West Maui

Best Place to Stay In Maui Eldorado Condos For Sale

This is the area of luxury resorts , golf and other beautiful beaches. The downside is that its less central to other areas on the island.

West Maui is home to some stunning resorts, making it one of the best places to stay in Maui for couples. Dont miss Lahaina! While it can be brimming with tourists in the shops on Front Street, its also a historic whaling village that was once the capital of the Hawaiin kingdom.

Past Lahaina is Kaanapali and its master-planned Kaanapali Beach Resort. Take time to hit the beach here and walk the boardwalk to admire the dramatic coastline as waves crash onto the volcanic rock here.

Keep heading up Mauis north shore and arrive at exclusive Kapalua for more beautiful luxury resorts, including The Ritz-Carlton and Kapalua Resorts. The Kapalua Wine & Food Festival happens here.

Pros and cons: In West Maui, youre inevitably close to great restaurants, the most beautiful beaches, great shopping, groceries, and things to do after dark. Plus, plenty of day tours leave out of Lahaina.

The only real downside to staying in West Maui are the potential traffic jams due to the only north-south highway here. Its just a two lane artery.

Be aware that its an hours drive between Kapalua at the northern tip of the island down to Kihei near the northern part of South Maui. And its going to be a bit of a schlep to the Road to Hana from here.

Here are my picks for West Maui:

1. Beachfront Luxury Oceanfront Home

2. Luxury Resort in Kapalua

Our Favorite Hotels On West Maui

There are so many great hotels on the west side, but we wanted to share our favorite three, ranging from budget to luxury.

  • Montage Kapalua: Located in Kapalua, the Montage is the best luxury hotel on the west side. It offers a secluded location, world class golf courses, easy walking trails, and is minutes from beautiful Kapalua Bay. You also have some of the best restaurants on Maui within a short drive. The luxurious hotel has 56 one to four-bedroom villas spread over 24 acres. Book a stay at the Montage Kapalua Bay here.
  • Westin Kaanapali: Located right near Whalers Village in Kaanapali, the Westin offers easy access to a lot of amenities on the west side. Aside from being on one of the best beaches , it also has the best pool in Kaanapali, and is a quick walk to the restaurants and shops in Whalers village. Book a stay at the Westin Kaanapali here.
  • Kaanapali Beach Hotel: This is probably our favorite budget hotel on the whole island. When you step onto the grounds, it feels like youve been transported back in time. Everyone is friendly and the grounds are simple but beautiful. Located right on Kaanapali Beach, the resort offers everything you need in a great location and for a great price. Bonus! They underwent a beautiful new renovation to their rooms in 2020. Click here to book the Kaanapali Beach Hotel.

The Montage sits on beautiful Kapalua Bay .
