Why Choose Koukaki For A Cheap Hotel In Athens

One of the most beautiful neighborhoods in Athens, Koukaki blends tradition and modernity in a charming mix of gastronomy, culture, and nightlife.

Its privileged location -only a few minutes away from Acropolis Hill is only one of the reasons why you should be looking at Koukaki for your trip to Athens.

Even though Koukaki is considered to be an upscale area of Athens, this notion is not confirmed by the prices of the restaurants, pubs, and bars that lie on its busy pedestrian streets.

The hub of Koukaki is far from a tourist trap like the ones youve seen in major European cities and staying there will cause no real blows to your budget.

Last but not least, Koukaki is located right between two metro stations: the Acropolis station and the Syggrou-Fix station .

Where Is The Best Place To Stay In Athens

As mentioned before, our favorite area in Athens is Thisseio. It is next to the ancient sites, yet somewhat secluded. In spite of its central location it is pretty authentic and local. That said, if you have only 24 hours the best location to stay in Athens would be close to Syntagma and Monastiraki squares. The modern metro to the airport stops under both squares, while the old metro to Piraeus port stops in Monastiraki.

We have divided the city depending on your interest and type of people you are traveling with. If your main goal is to see as many attractions as possible stay in Plaka or Monastiraki areas. If you are visiting with your loved one, stay in the Center or Kolonaki. Those traveling with family should choose between Thisseio and Koukaki. Finally, if you are on the budget, stay either in Psyri or in Exarcheia.

Psyri Where To Stay In Athens For Nightlife

The streets in Psyri flood with people at night. Yet it is also extremely close to many sights, including the neighborhood of Thissio and Monastiraki Square. Psyri is the perfect place for you if you want to be close to the center, yet also in the middle of the action at night.

Psyri has an anti-establishment vibe from its history as a home to discontents. Recently, the area has gentrified after lots of quirky bars and artisan shops moved in. Yet it still retains its alternative mood.

Nearby are Monastiraki Square and its famous flea market, Athens Central Market, and the neighborhood of Thissio.

Solo Female Travel Considerations

Solo female travellers are a common sight in Greece. Greek people are warm, friendly, and hospitable and you do not have to worry about harassment from local men.

In the four years that I have lived in Greece, I have travelled all over Greece solo.

I have been everywhere from the Saronic islands to the Cyclades, and from Northern Greece to the Peloponnese. I have never encountered any major problems.

It is an unfortunate reality that women travelling alone anywhere in the world need to practice heightened vigilance. However, you shouldnt let this fill you with worry.

Just practice the same common sense as you would at home or when travelling elsewhere. Be wary of over-friendly strangers and if someone bothers you, dont hesitate to inform a local business owner.

Where Not To Stay In Athens

If you are wondering where not to stay in Athens, the list wont be that long. The whole city is pretty safe, though some areas can be dodgy, with occasional pickpockets . When we talk about safe areas to stay in Athens we refer to the central area surrounding the Acropolis, except for few neighborhoods. Staying far from the center doesnt make much sense, as Athens doesnt have the best public transport.

We do not recommend staying in Kerameikos and Metasourgio neighborhoods. Its not the most pleasant area, though some of the best bars in Athens are here. Gazi, next to Kerameikos, is quite safe, but doesnt host many accommodation options. Finally, we dont recommend staying anywhere south, west or north of Omoneia. Exarcheia, Psyri and Center are not far from Omonia, but have a very different vibe.

Dont Leave Your Stuff Unattended

Never leave your stuff unattended even to go to the bathroom. Ask an employee to watch your stuff .

Its tempting to leave your bag a few feet from you or your cell phone casually on the table. But try not to ever be in a situation where someone could run up and grab your stuff. I like to sit with my bag wrapped around my chair leg when Im sitting outside.

You cant be one hundred percent theft-proof out in public. But your goal is to look like the person who would be the most difficult to rob so that pickpockets and petty thieves move on to easier targets.
