Miami Travel Guide | Where to Stay, Best Hotels

Are Taxis Safe In Miami

Yep. Taxis are safe in Miami, generally speaking.

But they can be quite expensive. And because of that, a lot of people use Lyft or Uber.

However, there are still some things you should know there are always going to be dangers when it comes to unlicensed taxis.

When you arrive at the airport, get a licensed cab. Go to the lower levels after baggage claim and youll find uniformed representatives wholl help you get a taxi.

Elsewhere in the city, you can get a licensed cab by going to taxi stands or by calling them you can also hail them in the street if you feel lucky.

If you hail a taxi, make sure its licensed. There will be a license number displayed ON the taxi itself. And the taxi driver will have a on the dashboard inside the car.

If youre in a taxi in Miami, the passenger pays for tolls. Just so you know. Drivers arent trying to rip you off, thats just how it is.

They should be using a meter. But there ARE some flat rates for certain destinations. To go to South Beach or the Airport, for example, there are flat rates. These can actually work in your favor if theres heavy traffic.

Taxi drivers are also not allowed to charge for extra passengers or baggage.

Basically, taxis are ok in Miami. But theyre not usually budget-friendly.

What To Do In Little Havana

All roads in Little Havana lead to Calle Ocho, the beating heart of the neighbourhood, so it would only be right to begin your explorations here. As well as scoping out colourful street art and retro architecture, youll also come across the Latin Walk of Fame, which runs between 12th and 17th Avenues. The Hispanic equivalent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, here youll find stars dedicated to legendary Latin celebrities including the undisputed queen of salsa, Celia Cruz. Calle Ocho is also where youll find Maximo Gomez Park, or Domino Park as its more commonly known. For over 35 years this park has been the meeting point for local Cubans and Latinos, and still today youll find old timers gathering to play dominos whilst they sip cafecitos and trash talk their neighbours. Extra charm points go to those who visit armed with a few words of Spanglish they go a long way.

Of course Little Havana wouldnt be a true representation of Cuba without cigars, and the best place to get the 411 is the El Credito Cigar Factory. An interesting visit for cigar pros and non-smokers alike, this is the oldest cigar factory in the US and a good spot to watch artisans hand rolling their creations. Prices range from affordable to crazy, and should you be inclined you can even kick back in one of the retro lounge chairs and feel like something of a Cuban legend.

Where Is The Convinient And Safe Place To Stay In Miami

I am going to Miami for a business trip, and plan to stay there for a couple of days after the meeting. I never been there before.

Where is the convenient and safe area to stay, so I can walk most of the places? I will be alone in there, and prefer not to do any driving. My office is in Coral Gables, but I can move anywhere else for these couple of days.

hxm>

Since you are from Chicago, I suggest a few days at the beach to store up some warmth for the winter. In Coral Gables, the Hotel St Michel is very reasonable, small and European feeling.

After your business, move to the beach and check prices at Park Central, Sense, Clarion, Kent or Century Hotel. You can walk EVERYWHERE and need no car except a taxi to get from Coral Gables/business to the beach.

Thank you, AG!

Even though, I am from Chicago :), I am not a beach person. I would like so spend on a beach for a couple of hours or so, but this is about it.

I never been to Miami, so I am more interested to see the city, try local food, etc…

I would prefer to be closer to the ‘happenning area’. What will work for me from this perspective?

Edited: 11 years ago

The “happening area” is South Beach & it is also the most walkable & has the widest choice of accommodations.

Downtown Coral Gables is also walkable but not nearly so “happening.” It is more like a smaller & flat version of Beverly Hills.

Is Miami Safe For Tourists

Miami is the seventh-largest city in the United States and is a popular destination for US travelers more than the international types.

Its a cultural hub of the Caribbean Sea, as it is often seen as the destination for Spanish-speaking migrants due to the history of Puerto Ricans and Cubans making it here.

Just for the record, it is safe to visit Miami right now. You probably learned from movies and TV series such as Scarface and Dexter that Miami is synonymous with drugs and homicide.

However, it isnt as bad as its made out to be. There are still issues in the day-to-day life of Miami such as gun crime, but unlike the TV depiction, this violence isnt always gang-related.

Despite dropping crime rates, violent crime in Miami is one of the highest in the country. There are many neighborhoods that you shouldnt be walking around.

Especially at night. Overtown and Liberty City both have the highest violent crime rate in Miami and should be avoided at all times. Make sure you also know what the weather is like when you visit.
