Interpreting The Crime Maps
When looking at the crime map for San Juan, remember that the rate of crime per resident may appear inflated when people visit the area during the day, but do not live there. For example, there are few retail establishments in the city. Many crimes are committed in retail areas in blocks where few people live. Red areas on the crime rate map do not always indicate danger for San Juan residents who live there.
More issues arise with places like airports, parks, and schools. Major airports, of which San Juan has 0, always look like high-crime locations due to the large number of people and the low population nearby. Parks and designated recreational areas, of which San Juan has 0, have the same problem. Of San Juans 353,727 residents, few live near recreational areas. Because many people visit, crime rates may appear higher even for safe parks. Ultimately crime happens where people are, whether they live there or not. Before writing off an area as unsafe, look at both the crime rate and total crime maps, then consider nearby destinations that people may be visiting.

Where Should I Stay In Puerto Rico
If you want to stay somewhere that highlights island culture and history, head to San Juan. This is where many of the hotels are located, near museums, historic sites, restaurants, shopping, and art. There are also great beaches, like Condado or nearby Isla Verde, so visitors to San Juan don’t need to choose between beach or city.
For a true beach break, head outside the city to beaches in Isabela, Rio Grande, or Ponce. Alternatively, hop a quick flight to Vieques, an island retreat 13 miles off the eastern tip of the main island. There are wild horses that run across white sand beaches, bioluminescent bays that light up the night, and the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge, which offers incredible encounters with nature.
Safe Neighborhoods And Areas In Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is relatively safe for tourists and travelers as long as they stay out of dangerous areas. Visitors should avoid areas like Puerta de Tierra, El Parque de las Palomas, Piñones and La Perla at night.
Other great areas for tourists are Rio Grande, Fajardo, Ponce, Cabo Rojo, Vieques, Culebra, and Rincon. But, that doesnt mean tourists should limit themselves to those parts of the island. Safest Neighborhood In San Juan
I’ve heard some differing opinions on this topic, but all my info comes from those who haven’t lived in/visited San Juan for years. I’d like some up-to-date opinions.
Safest neighborhood? The cities are not organized here like in the US where you have segregated neighborhoods .
In PR you can have a public housing apartment building next to half million condominiums, upper middle class neighborhoods next to handmade concrete houses. Everything is intermixed in a “scandinavian socialist” way. This social intergration was also promoted by the first elected government of PR, Luis Muñoz Marín, .
safest? depends on each individual experience, that is the best answer i can give you.
This is only MY opinion–I have been to Puerto Rico and if I were to go again I would stay at a resort. I can’t remember the names but there is one in Old San Juan that is amazing. I think you will feel safer. When we were there it did not seem crowded.
Have a great trip!
Thanks for the opinions. Keep them coming!
Someone had told my traveling companion that “Old San Juan is the only safe place to stay”. I have been told that most areas are fine with a little common sense. I’m hoping to confirm what I’ve been told and put my companion’s mind at ease since Old San Juan is out of our budget.
With all respect to your friend, Who told you that does not know anything about PR

Common Scams In Puerto Rico
There are few to little scams in Puerto Rico, but you should always keep your eyes open for the following common scams:
Taxi scam Taxis scams take place when the drivers dont turn on the meter, take longer routes to charge more, or claim they dont have change when you pay in cash. Research the route using GPS systems, know the local taxi tarrifs, and always ask the driver to turn the meter on.
Rental car scams Since the rental car industry is big in Puerto Rico, its not uncommon to see scams related to car rentals. If youre renting a car in Puerto Rico, you need to watch out for excessive toll pass fees, inflated deposits, and hidden charges for things like cleaning the sand from your car. Discover Cars is a great search engine for reputable agencies, since it allows you to easily see and compare customer reviews for each operator.
False guides A local may approach you claiming to be a guide that can take you to special places. Hell then proceed to take you somewhere where he gets a commission for bringing clients. You will never know about the commission but you will pay a higher price for what you buy to cover that commission fee.
Pickpockets Pickpocketing occurs in many countries of the world and Puerto Rico is no exception. Pickpocketers could snatch your items away while distracting you or by bumping into you. Always be aware of your belongings and pay attention to your surroundings.
