Regola District: Market Stalls And Nightlife In The Heart Of Campo De Fiori
The best area to stay in Rome for foodies and night owls
Campo de Fiori is a lovely historic square in the centre of Rome. Peaceful and quiet in the daytime, when it hosts a picturesque open-air market, after dark it turns into an outdoor party hub, with lots of trendy bars and restaurants spilling out onto the square.
In the past, this area was an important centre of arts and crafts, as evidenced by the names of the streets branching out from the square, each referring to a specific trade. Even today, they continue to host some great artisanal shops and bakeries, which attract tourists and locals alike.
Campo de Fiori is one of the best places to stay in Rome for those looking for an authentic local experience while being close to everything. Its within walking distance to major sights like Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, Castel SantAngelo and the Roman Forum.

Public Transportation In Rome
Pack walking shoes. You will be walking a LOT. Rome is a city that is spread out. It is possible to walk to most major landmarks, depending on where you are staying in Rome, but your feet will be tired. Its best to at least understand how to get around Rome using public and private transportation options in case you want to give your feet some rest.
Rome does give you public transportation options like the metro or the bus. The metro does not cover the whole city but it does stop near most major attractions. It only has three lines that cross the city diagonally. Tourists dont seem to use the metro much and it can seem a bit deserted. Use caution if you are the only person around.
Alternatively, you can catch a bus. There are over 8,000 bus stops all over the city of Rome. So you will be able to get where you need to go using this system. Please note that you cannot buy a bus ticket on the bus. You need to buy it at a metro stop or convenience store first and then you will validate it on the bus. The tram and urban railway are also options, but they go fewer places and arent as useful.
As always, try to be as inconspicuous as possible. The less you look like a tourist then the less likely you are to be bothered. You are more likely to have issues with public transportation but always make sure private carriers are legitimate. The easiest way to do this is to have your hotel arrange it or get recommendations from them on what companies to use.

Where To Stay Overall: Trastevere
Trastevere is filled with narrow, cobblestone alleyways that run past buildings decorated with tangled ivy and vines. It makes you feel like youre back in a medieval city.
For many centuries, Trastevere was a working-class district, but in recent years, its become a bohemian hotspot for foodies and tourists wanting to see beyond Romes big-name attractions. At night, you can mingle in the Piazza di Santa Maria with crowds of young locals and students enjoying the nightlife, eating, and drinking. And if you climb the nearby steps of Gianicolo Hill, youll reach a spot with views across Rome, including the Pantheon and the Capitoline Hills.

The Best Area To Stay In Rome For Connections: Termini
The area around Stazione Termini gets mixed reviews because it is itself quite mixed.
Beside very elegant hotels , you have the small and charming streets of the Monti and also some more budget accommodation options, with a city atmosphere that range from grand to hipster to busy.
The main reason to stay in this area is the convenience of the many trains departing from here and the shuttle to Fiumicino airport.
Rather than staying near the airport, I highly recommend you take the quick train ride here.
A good hotel just beside the station is the NH Hotel Palazzo Cinquecento, luxurious and hugely convenient, but several others are in the area, to suit all budgets.
You can find our selection of recommended hotels near Termini here.

Where To Stay For Arts/culture : Pigneto
Less than a 15-minute tram ride from the center of Rome, Pigneto is a colorful neighborhood full of interesting graffiti, street art, and murals thats had a hipster makeover in recent years. Some people call it the Brooklyn of Rome, and I think thats a fair description! Its filling up with trendy bars and restaurants and often gets labeled bohemian, although its a real mix of small, older homes and new apartment buildings. Its also home to lots of small cocktail bars and cafés and other great spots for some people-watching.

Centro Storico The Best Place To Stay In Rome For First
Rome city centre is where most major attractions are. Including two of Romes most famous squares, Piazza Navona with its baroque charm and fountains, and Campo de Fiori, the piazza symbol of the florist profession as it was in the past. This is considered the very heart of Rome and quite predictably, its always packed with tourists.
This Rome neighbourhood is very safe as all around are the government and Parliament palaces, making it always full of police, Carabinieri and Army.
This is definitely the best area to stay in Rome for first-time visitors as all landmarks are within easy walking reach. Impossible to miss a visit to the Pantheon, a walk along Via del Corso, a stop in the Capitoline Museums and a visit to Campo de Fiori and the Jewish Quarter.
I would probably avoid the restaurants offering tourist deal menus right in Piazza Navona and the Pantheon, but even here you can find some nice eateries and gelaterias. Some restaurants that always deliver good quality in this Rome neighbourhood are Da Armando al Pantheon , Da Gino al Parlamento , Ginger Sapori e Salute , Emma Pizzeria con Cucina .
If you are looking for a good artisan gelato in the city center, some of the best places are Otaleg , Fiordiluna , Gunther Gelato Italiano .
If you are wondering where to stay in Rome with kids, this is a great option for all the landmarks to visit, the restaurants to try and the several pedestrian areas.
Staying in Rome city centre is for you if:
Tridente And Via Veneto
Though technically part of Romes historic city center, the Tridente neighborhood is quite noticeably among the most upscale areas of Rome. Tridente is filled with designer boutiques and 4/5 star hotels, but also the beautiful Spanish Steps, Trinità dei Monti church and the Medici Villa. Nearby Via Veneto is another upscale place to stay in Rome. It was the hotspot in the 1950s and 60s, filled with celebrities, politicians, film stars, paparazzi, and various other hangers-on. Its lost some of its allure since then, with more businessmen than cameramen, but you can still find elegant restaurants and luxury hotels here.
Stay here if: you want to be centrally located and classy price isnt a problem for you youre planning on doing some serious luxury shopping youve always dreamed of walking with Roman VIPs on your Roman vacation you want to stay in a luxury hotel.

Where To Stay For Young Travelers: San Lorenzo
If you want to stay somewhere with a student vibe, then San Lorenzo is it, near the Sapienza University and walking distance east of the city center. The neighborhood was bombed heavily in World War II and was never rebuilt quite as well as other areas, but what San Lorenzo lacks in prettiness it makes up for with fun.
There are lots of shopping options both for new Italian fashion and vintage clothes, great cheap pizza, and cool bars. Head to the Via dei Volsci and Via dei Sabelli to see where the young people of Rome enjoy a night out.
Best places to stay in San Lorenzo
Rome is a big city with lots to see and experience, so figuring out which neighborhood will work best for you is partly about deciding whether you want to indulge in regular restaurant meals or nightlife, or be near plenty of the historical sights or try some more local neighborhoods for a when in Rome kind of experience.
If you have a longer stay, you can always consider starting in one of the inner city neighborhoods while you see the most famous sights, then having a few days a little further out to enjoy shopping and dining among locals.
Whatever you choose, Rome is a simply amazing city, and Im sure youll be impressed with it!
Where To Stay In Rome For Families: Piazza Di Spagna
Best for: Travellers that want to experience the luxurious side of Rome, or families who want somewhere both quiet and central.
For some of the best hotels in Rome, Italy, I recommend staying near Piazza di Spagna.
This area shows off Romes love of luxury. If youre looking for a luxurious hotel or apartment, fine dining restaurants, and the best designer shopping, then this is the area for you.
Here youll find the famous Via Condotti, home to some of the worlds leading luxury brands like Prada, Gucci, and Bottega Veneta, with the Spanish Steps and gorgeous Trinità dei Monti in the backdrop.
You can walk along this iconic Italian street, admiring the window displays and making your way to one of Romes most famous attractions.
Wandering up the famous Spanish Steps towards Trinità dei Monti in Rome
The Villa Borghese Gardens and Trevi Fountain are all within walking distance from the Spanish Steps area.
Villa Borghese is a peaceful park where many locals go for their Sunday walks. If youre travelling to Rome with children, this area is a great place to stay also because of this.
The region also has two metro stations, Spagna and Barberini, to help you get around to other parts of the city.
Piazza di Spagna is one of the best parts of Rome to stay in because its conveniently located near some of Romes top attractions, so that you can easily tick them off your Europe bucket list.

Where To Stay In Rome On A Budget: Termini
The Termini train station, or Stazione Termini in Italian, is at the center of this area. This is the largest hotel district and it is the best place to stay in Rome on a budget. Convenience and competition are what make this area so affordable.
The Termini train station is the hub of transportation and travel to the city and other parts of Italy. If you are traveling to the city by train, you will arrive at the main train station here. You will also arrive here if you are traveling by plane because both the airport Express bus and train drop off passengers here.
Termini Station is more than likely where you will start your journey through Rome. Because of this, the hotel, hostel, and bed and breakfast industries in the area have grown. There are so many options and that makes prices competitive and reasonable. It was my first ever place to stay in Rome years and years ago in when I was a backpacker.
Online research may make you have hesitations about staying in this area but I would ask you to withhold your judgment until you experience it. Areas around train stations can be rough and Termini is no different, but if you stay aware of your surroundings you should be fine. It has gotten a lot safer in the last few years and I think you can have an enjoyable time staying in this neighborhood. In fact, I recently stayed there with a baby simply because it was convenient having an early flight in the morning.

Areas To Avoid In Rome
Rome isnt always whimsical this is still, after all, a big city that suffers from big-city problems. While these problems are pretty minor compared to other cities, there are still some places to avoid and should be taken into account when choosing where to stay in Rome. Take note of the following:
- Busy areas, like tourists attractions and the metro, are where pickpockets like to work. Be aware of your things when youre in crowded places.
- The rowdiest nightlife areas are Testaccio and San Lorenzo. Theres nothing particularly dangerous about them but their energy can be a little aggressive. If youre looking for the best area to stay in Rome with a family, avoid these neighborhoods.
- If there are truly areas to avoid in Rome, then they are most likely on the edges of the city. Trullo is often considered one of the worst neighborhoods in Rome and the Eastern suburbs e.g. Rebibbia, Tor Bella Monica tend to be rundown as well. Thankfully, theres no reason for tourists to come to these anyways.
- On a lighter note, try to avoid Romes ultra-touristy places during the day these are usually overrun from shortly after sunup to sundown and can be a pain. Visit the Colosseum very early in the morning and/or see the Trevi in the middle of the night.
