Top Places To Stay In Rome

Monti & The Colosseum

Where to Stay in ROME for 2021! Best Neighborhoods!

For most first-time visitors to Rome, the Colosseum tops the list of things to do. So why not stay within walking distance, or even wake up each morning with an amazing view of the Colosseum?

Monti is a charming neighborhood that sits to the north of the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. From here, its just a short walk to these world-class sights. This is also where you will find the Basilica di San Pietro in Vincoli which is famous for Michelangelos statue of Moses.

This pretty neighborhood is also home to many great restaurants. There are several convenient metro stations, such as Colosseo and Cavour, so getting around by metro is a breeze.

Monti is also tucked away between historic Rome and the Termini station, so if you dont mind a little walking, you can get to both of these on foot.

Pros: Easy walk to the Colosseum and Roman Forum, some hotels offer views of the ColosseumCons: None

LUXURY:Villa Spalletti Trivelli Small Luxury Hotels of the World. This hotel has an excellent location, within walking distance of both the Trevi Fountain and the Colosseum. Set in a historic villa, rooms are decorated with rich, antique furnishings and each room has a small sitting area. There is also a spa and small garden area.

Termini / Esquilino: Convenient & Affordable But Less Charming

Choosing a place to stay is all about evaluating the pros and cons of a neighborhood, and making a decision based on whats important to you.

There is probably no other neighborhood in Rome that is more polarizing than the area immediately around Termini station, Romes main train station.

On one hand, its not the nicest or most romantic/charming area to explore. On the other hand, its about as central as it gets if you want to be connected both to the main sights in Rome via public transportation, and to any day trips or next destinations on your Italy itinerary.

In this section, were including the entire area around Termini, but the main area where youre going to find the best places to stay is Esquilino, which is on the southern side of the station, adjacent to Monti.

Wed avoid the section around Via Nazionale, which is always bustling, loud, and busy, and isnt the most pleasant place to stay. Believe us, Matt stayed here on his first trip to Rome, and we stayed a few nights at a hostel here on our last trip .

There are a few other cool spots in San Lorenzo , a hip, young-feeling neighborhood on the northeastern side of Termini. We included one of them in the places to stay section below, but you should know its a bit further away from public transportation.

Where To Stay In Rome: Termini Esquilino Central Station Area

If you come to Rome by airplane, your journey through to the Eternal City will probably start from the central station. There are several convenient options that connect it to the airports Leonardo express train for 14 euro one way from Fiumicino airport or several shuttle buses from both Roman airports starting from 4 euro one way.

Here you will find lots of hotels for all the budgets, from the inexpensive bed & breakfasts to five stars hotels with luxury suites and spa.

Dont miss the National Roman Museum at Palazzo Massimo with one of the best art and archaeological collections in the world and the nearby Baths of Diocletian, ancient thermal baths that gave the name to Termini train station.

The station itself contains a hidden secret too at the underground floor you can still see the remains of the Servian walls, the first Roman walls built in the IV century BC. Treat yourself at Eataly local food supermarket and restaurant in Piazza della Repubblica, while admiring the gorgeous Fountain of the Naiads.

Esquilino is only one subway station away from Termini. It is the most multicultural area of central Rome with a local Chinatown. If you like to be surrounded by ethnic shops, restaurants and different languages, choose your accommodation here.

If you are a solo traveler who wants to party until late in the night it is maybe better to avoid this area, after 11pm it becomes empty and might look fearful.

Neighbourhood Guide To Rome

The best places to visit in Rome | Condé Nast Traveller

Once the centre of the world, Rome is still an awe-inspiring city, with an incredible history and an incredible collection of art and monuments. The food, drink and architecture of Rome is also enticing, as are the marketplaces, and the very life of Rome. The idea of sitting in a sunny Roman piazza admiring the view, and the people, is bellísima for many. Rome has expanded as its aged, and contemporary Rome includes several previously separate towns, across a city connected by a small metro and rail system, and a much more useful bus service. Theres also a tram service, but it doesnt reach the centre of town. Central Rome is officially broken up into 22 rione, which are relatively small districts or neighbourhoods, and our guide treats some rione as stand alone neighbourhoods, and amalgamates some into the colloquially named neighbourhoods most commonly used today.

How Do You Order Coffee In Rome

In Rome, espresso is the number one choice among locals. But what is it exactly? Is it just regular old espresso without sugar? Or does it include the milk? And how much is too much? Let us explain…

The word “caffè” literally translates into English as “coffee.” However, there are several types of coffee that vary depending on where you go. Italian coffee is typically served hot and black, while Americans prefer their cold and cream.

To make things even more complicated, there are actually three main types of coffee in Italy: latte, macchiato, and americano.

Latte is simply milk. If you want something stronger, ask for a cappuccino.

Macchiato is espresso mixed with steamed milk. This is usually served in a tall glass with whipped cream on top. Americano is espresso mixed with hot water. This is similar to a latte, except it doesn’t contain milk.

If you’re looking for a simple cup of coffee, try asking for un caffè. You can read more in our post on how to order coffee in Italy too.

Historic Center Best Area For First Timers

The Historic Center â Centro Storico â is where to stay in Rome if it is your first time in the city. The area of the Pantheon is charming, though I am biased towards Campo deâ Fiori! There are a few issues you may encounter if you opt to stay in the Historic Center of Rome. First of all, the prices: budget options in this area of Rome are a bit more limited. Secondly: no metro station â but you can easily walk to Piazza di Spagna for line A. Finally, itâs a bit more crowded and chaotic than you may wish. If none of this is a bother, definitely stay there!

Look for places to stay in the Centro Storico here.
