Shepherd Huts In Sardinia

The island of Sardinia, off Italys west coast, preserves its own rich cultural heritage. Despite its sublime coastline, home to some of the countrys dreamiest white-sand beaches, this is an island of pastori, non pescatori , especially in the mountainous interior. An integral part of this heritage is the pinnetta, a round, rudimentary shepherds shelter, built from dry-stone walling and juniper branches.

Sardinna Antiga, just a mile or so from the sea in Santa Lucia di Siniscola in the island’s northeast, takes the concept a step further, bringing you back in time in eco-friendly huts that sensitively adhere to the building techniques of Sardinia’s Nuragic era. Kick back, unplug , sip mountain spring water from an earthenware pitcher and tune into nature.

Bologna The Lively Historic Capital Of The Emilia

A stunning city known for its beauty, left-wing politics, wealth and most importantly its cuisine. Bologna is the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region in northern Italy. If you arrive by train, move swiftly away from the station so you can take in the most beautiful sites of the city.

There are many arcades that allow you to explore the city even if its raining. I recommend wandering around the backstreets until you stumble upon one of the many beautiful squares where you can stop for a cafe or gelato. Bologna also boasts the oldest university in the world, which was founded in 1088. Although most people visit the city to discover its renowned culinary delights, these include tagliatelle al ragù, lasagne, tortellini served in broth and fried gnocchi.

Hotel De Russie The Secret Garden In The Heart Of Rome

This icon of the Rocco Forte hotel group is situated in the heart of Rome between the Spanish Steps and the Piazza del Popolo. The approach to the luxury 5 star residence is along the Via del Bambuino a paradise of high end boutiques, antique stores and art galleries.

You could almost hear the fanfare as we stroll into the glorious Secret Garden. A multi-tiered affair that cascades down towards you and takes your breath away at first sight complete with palm trees, water features galore and even a grotto straight out of a fairy-tale.

The rooms are suitably sumptuous with plenty of space for you to enjoy. Again they use muted lighting and soft colours which makes for a contemporary relaxed ambience. We were given a generous and comfortable suite that overlooked the tiered garden.

Understandably everything about the hotel revolves around the central gardens. This is a built up area of Rome and to have such a paradise to escape from the summer heat is unique. The hotel building itself is wrapped around the gardens and so many rooms get their own view of this so rare of green spaces. The garden hosts the hotels restaurant, Le Jardin de Russie. It is also houses the Stravinskij Bar in the spring and summer where you can have a quiet drink or catch DJ sets at weekends.

We ate out in the evening and arrived back at the hotel with the kids armed with some of Romes finest ice-cream.

Castello Aragonese Il Monastero Hotel Ischia

The Island of Ischia just of the bay of Naples really is a joy to behold. With its sandy beaches and hot springs, it makes a great holiday destination and one the must see places in Italy. Basically, a dormant volcano the main tourist draw is the Castello Aragonese that juts dramatically across on its own island across from the main town. What is really special though is that part of the castle has been turned into a small but perfectly formed hotel. We got the chance to stay there and we were not disappointed.

Walking across the raised narrow causeway with the castle rising above us was quite a site. You have to go up life inside the bowel of the rock itself and you arrive at the hotel which is at a dizzying height with seabird flying below you.

We stayed in the Suite lAltana which the only one available and the most expensive and spacious. It was truly breath taking with 2 larger terraces overlong the island and bay. It was a tastefully furnished suite with acres of space and 2 bedrooms. The restaurant has its own terrace and you can see the world stretched out below you as you eat. A truly memorable stay in a unique hotel.

Cinque Terre A String Of Beautiful Centuries

The rugged, rustic but breathtaking beauty of Cinque Terre seems to perfectly sum up why Italy is so revered as a travel destination. Located on the stunning Italian Riviera coastline and easily one of the most attractive places to visit in Italy, the series of five brightly coloured medieval villages cling jaggedly and almost impossibly to the inhospitable coastal rocks.

Its such an important place it was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1997. Meander around the narrow streets, wander the ancient vineyards which cling to steep terraces and then head for a pesto pasta lunch at one of the local trattorias.

Positano is a small town but as it stretches up a cliff, we recommend sticking to the lower levels if youre interested in the beach, or the higher levels if you want to easily travel around the region and enjoy the view. Luxury wellness retreats and cute airbnbs aside, rifugios are as ubiquitous to the mountains of South Tyrol as, well, the mountains themselves, and are a wonderful place to embrace the centuries-old alpine culture that exists here.

In fact, some of our most favourite evenings in the Dolomites have been spent in a rifugio, devouring hearty food and Schnapps, singing along with happy locals, and then retiring for a great nights sleep after a hard days ascent.

The majority of rifugios in South Tyrol are privately owned, and need to be booked well in advance online
