Old Town Where To Stay In Dubrovnik For First Timers
The old town area is one of Dubrovniks biggest attractions and favourite places to stay, although hotel prices can be somewhat inflated.
Old terraced homes and businesses are squeezed side by side in the narrow cobbled roads and winding alleyways.
As you enter Old Town through Pile Gate, the pedestrianised single main street named Stradun, stretches some 300 metres in a straight line through the centre, with boutique businesses, cafes, bars, coffee-shops, and hotels on either side.
Here you will also find the Onofrio Fountain, circa 1438, and the Franciscan Monastery, with its Little Brothers Pharmacy, dating back to 1317, and still trading.
At the other end of Stradun is the Orlando Column, a favourite meeting place with the locals, and the Church of St Blaise.
Close by is the Rectors Palace . A 15th century building badly ravaged by fire. It was rebuilt Gothic style, to become the palace of the Rector of the then Republic of Ragusa, and is now a museum full of historical information and artefacts.
A little further along is Gunduliceva Poljana Square, and its busy morning market, as well as an 18th century Jesuit Monastery.
After a much needed coffee, a walk around the old defences should be on the to-do list, but be warned. It can be hard work, especially in the bright sunshine, so carry some extra liquids.
For the wine connoisseurs, the Malvasija Wine Bar stocks over 60 different wines, or for the jazz fans, the Troubadour Jazz Café should touch the spot.
Pile Best Place To Stay Close To Public Transportation
Famous for its ancient 15th-century city wall, Pile gate, and the 11th-century Lovrijenac fortress, this area is perfect for those who dont like to stay in one place while traveling. Because this is where most city buses have their last stop, you will find it super easy to explore other parts of the city like the Lapad Peninsula plus, Pile is located within walking distance, just east of the Old Town.
Pile and the Lovrijenac fortress look like those medieval places that you see in history books and wonder how many wars took place there. Built on a 30-meter high rock, the fortress has to be one of the most unique places outside the Old Town in Dubrovnik. Historians believe that it was built between 1018 and 1038. Wow, thats a really long time! The views are so beautiful from here you cant miss the chance to see a sunset at this place in Pile.
You can spend your mornings in one of the many cafes, have a strong espresso and get ready for a full day of sightseeing and walking around. Of course, for those of you who want to relax and enjoy the Croatian sun, you can walk down to Dance beach and stay until the sun goes down!

Pile Walkable & Compact
For those wanting to stay close to the Old Town without staying right in it Pile might be a great area to stay in.
Located just to the west of the Old Town, this small, compact area is just outside the famous Pile Gate. Its an area that is comprised of several shops and restaurants with sea views. We even had lunch here once.
Heading away from the Old Town, the elevation changes and the accommodations are higher up the hill and offer views of the sea and Old Town. Closer to the water, there are a few beaches you can get to. The iconic Fort Lovrijenac also hangs out here.
One thing to consider is that the main bus station outside the Pile Gate is in this area. Its basically how everyone comes and goes from the Old Town so it gets busy during the day.
However, this area gets quieter at night once all the foot traffic dies down. Its also as close to the Old Town as you can get by car.

Boutique Hotel Stari Grad: Old Town
You know the saying, location, location, location. And if thats what youre looking for, then the Boutique Hotel Stari Grad has it in spades.
This luxury hotel is situated within the Old Town walls of Dubrovnik, so youre really in the heart of the action here. Its just a few steps over the cobbled streets to lively Stradun Street.
Inside, the hotel is modern and beautifully decorated after a big revamp in 2013. Its all very glam.
One absolute highlight is the rooftop terrace where breakfast is served. Is there a better way to start your day than a view out over Dubrovniks amber rooftops? I think not.
Apartments In Mlini/zupa Region
There are also SO many apartments and villas to choose from, that I honestly always recommend people stay in this area of town in the peak summer season. For example, you can stay in this modern two bedroom apartment with a panoramic view of the sea. Its also super close to the beach and walking trails, which would make it great for a family or a group of travelers!
Another great option for a larger group would be this villa, which Ive stayed at before and loved! It also has a great seaview, outdoor kitchen konoaba area for grilling, and private parking. You can either rent out a single room or the entire place for larger groups.
If youd like to stay a bit further into Zupa and moving closer to Cavtat, consider staying in the quaint seaside village of Plat. You have 6 seperate beaches here that are practically empty in the summer, an infinite pool, and a boat that will take you right into the harbor of the Old Town.
Theres also two really good local restaurants and a beach bar in this area. Consider staying at our familys apartments here to experience the true local Croatian life.

Why Stay In Gruz
Gruz is the main port of Dubrovnik, and it is the first stop for many visitors who arrive on cruise ships exploring the Adriatic and the Mediterranean. Gruz is located just north of the Old Town, making it a convenient part of the city to explore. For the most part, Gruz is residential, allowing you to see what Dubrovnik is truly like without the crowds of tourists. As can be expected from a more residential area, Gruz offers lower prices on everything from restaurants to clothing shops. Accommodation, too, is more affordable in Gruz than in other parts of Dubrovnik, and there is a wider range of low-cost options like budget hotels and hostels.
Gruz is known for its spectacular views over the water as well as its attractive marina. This part of Dubrovnik is the ideal place to stay if youre hoping to do some island hopping during your visit. The Elaphite Islands are within view from Gruz, and it is easy to arrange ferries for trips throughout the region.
Where To Stay In Cavtat
- Hotel Croatia Cavtat With views of the Adriatic as well as the surrounding mountains, the Hotel Croatia Cavtat is a nature lovers dream. Most rooms have balconies, letting you soak in the vistas in privacy, and perhaps with a drink in hand. Although you could make the most of 24/7 room service, you can also dine at one of the five restaurants on the premises or just grab a snack by the outdoor pool or the two private beaches. Pamper yourself at the salon, the spa or the Finnish sauna after a day of fun and sightseeing.
- Hotel Cavtat With air conditioned rooms, balconies overlooking the harbor and a swimming pool right on the rooftop, the Hotel Cavtat only feels expensive. In reality, the accommodation choice is affordable, making it ideal for budget travelers. Rooms include satellite television and comfortable beds, and an a la carte restaurant conveniently serves up fresh seafood and international cuisine. The front desk is open 24 hours a day, and staff are happy to help you arrange sightseeing tours or adventures throughout southern Croatia.
