Stay In Positano Or Sorrento

When it comes to choosing a place to stay between Positano and Sorrento, it all comes down to personal preference and your intentions within the area. Serene Sorrento is perfectly wedged on a ledge over the sea, creating the best springboard for sightseeing along the Amalfi coast. It may not have world-class sights but it offers tourists unmatched experiences in shopping and culinary options, as well as a spectacular cliffside setting.

Its back street gives it a peek at the culture and history, stretching to Greek times. In Positano, the views tend to be a little more dramatic. The town will also strike you with its ambience, relaxed, quaint and picturesque nature. If you are looking for an area that exposes you to beach life even without too many hotels, shops and restaurants, choose Positano.

However, if an area without a beach but has enough seawater to swim in while enjoying the sight of many hotels and shopping areas excites you, Sorrento should be your selection. The deal-breaker will be the means of transport. While Sorrento boasts easy access to transport should you wish to visit Pompeii and other areas, Positano does not. It means that if you do not have a personal means of transport, you will be safer in the seaside town.

Santagnello Coolest Place To Stay In Sorrento

Is it better to stay in POSITANO or SORRENTO when in Italy?! #shorts

SantAgnello is situated to the east of Sorrento town, and is the stop before on the Circumvesuviana, the mainline train from Naples. You can walk from here to Piazza Tasso in about half an hour.

Its set slightly apart from the Sorrento of the postcards, having a spirit of its own while retaining the storybook appearance. Its beauty almost belies its age, but not quite as there is evidence in the yellowing cliffs of exposure to ancient eruptions from Mt Vesuvius!

Theres two piazzas to choose from, to complete your nightly passeggiata, Piazza Matteotti with its palm trees and war memorial or Piazza SantAgnello with its church to SantAgnello.

Corso Italia runs through this area too, so you can follow your heart to the nightlife district with ease!

SantAgnello earns its title of coolest neighbourhood to stay in Sorrento because of its laid back style, ease of access, lack of other tourists, and an array of activities. Its a little more authentically Italian.

If you decide that this is the neighbourhood for you then you have to go to an olive oil tasting, okay? Theres room here for the olive groves that contribute to that most delicious and healthy of oils. Just imagine the breads that will go with it!

Priora A Quiet Authentic Residential Area In Sorrento

Our final destination of Priora lies to the southeast of Sorrento. It is a primarily residential town, located roughly a 20-minute walk from Sorrento, in the hills inland. The primary reason that most people will choose to stay in Priora is that it is affordable for those on a budget.

Due to being located away from the main tourist hubs and not containing many attractions of its own, hotel prices are significantly lower. You can find a cheap hotel or Airbnb here to suit almost any budget, making it a destination available to all.

This value then continues on everything like food, drink and essential products as well, as they are aimed more for the local population, so dont feature the price hikes common in more heavily tourist areas. Just because it is cheap doesnt mean Priora isnt without its own charms though.

The bars and restaurants are all filled with locals and serve local dishes, allowing you to get a truly authentic experience of the area. Local fishermen supply the restaurants daily, giving you the opportunity to sample some of the freshest seafood you will ever come across.

Less cars and pollution also allow you to take in some of the natural smells. With groves of the olives and lemons Sorrento is famous for surrounding the village, the smell of fruit is always in the air.

The one attraction it does have is a stunning Roman Catholic cathedral at the bottom of the hill. This is a perfect opportunity to take a walk and enjoy some history along with the scenery.

How To Get To The Sorrento Coast

We made our way to the Sorrento Coast via a 1:50 hour direct flight from Vienna to Naples. At the airport our patience was tested while waiting for a rental car. It was a Friday around noon and it seemed everyone had arrived at the same time.

Our rental car company Sicily by Car was one of the smaller firms at the airport. This way we had a rather short line and only waited for approx. 30 minutes. We suggest not to rent from the big name rental companies here the lines at their desks were insane !

Unfortunately this wasnt our rental car, but on the other hand: Ours had an AC and other modern comforts

Theoretically the drive from the Naples Airport to Massa Lubrense takes just a little more than 1 hour. But we stopped at too many occasions for some incredible look-out spots and Lemon Granita along the way.

Theres always a good reason for a stopover at the coastal road: Views or Lemon Granita!

Things To See And Do In Piazza Tasso:

People-watch on the square. Pick a time to catch the Passagiata, the Italian tradition of taking a stroll in the evening. Dress smart!

Visit the information centre just off the Piazza for advice on day-trips or drives to see the Amalfi Coast.

Cool off by the waters of the Marina Piccola where, legend has it, the Sirens seduced Ulysses!

Soak up a bit of history in Vallone Dei Mulini, while enjoying the lush valleys rivers.

Have a leisurely dinner on the square, taking your time to enjoy the food, the ambience and the views!

Choosing Where To Stay And Accommodation Type

The Sorrento area spreads over a plateau between the hills and the sea. The historic town Sorrento is nowadays at the heart of a larger urban area it’s situated at the western end of the plateau, and the coast road heads uphill to the west just after the town centre. Further east are the towns of Sant’Agnello, Piano di Sorrento and Meta di Sorrento. Although the four towns have separate names and separate identities, in reality they are all joined together as a kind of suburban sprawl dotted with hotels. When you look at booking pages, you can click on the map to see the hotel’s exact location this is a very helpful tool to make sure you don’t end up unexpectedly miles from the centre.

Looking through the listings you’ll find a large number of B& Bs and apartments as well as traditional hotels. It’s important to check these have a good number of guest reviews, and read the small print before booking . A flat can be a good way to experience Sorrento in a more independent fashion and live to your own timetable.

Stay In Naples Or Sorrento

People touring Italy for the first time are often confused between Naples and Sorrento. The truth is that both can connect you swiftly to Ischia, Pompeii and Capri. While one is a resort town that is filled with English speakers, the other is a large city. Naples tends to be a little cheaper and offers more accommodation than Sorrento.

Sorrento, which is a solid seaside town, on the other hand, is the best tourist area without too much noise and traffic. It also happens to have few places to visit and one church while Naples has many of them. Naples boasts massive counts of museums, culture and art galleries. Sorrento, however, has a beautiful seaside but is a little more expensive.

In Sorrento, the centre of the towns life is in Piazza Tasso. Most of the streets are lined with shops, restaurants and luxury hotels that overlook the harbour. Here, shopping is open until 9PM where you get to shop without the anxiety of going out after dark like is the case in Naples. For the average tourist, Sorrento is more laid back and comfortable than Naples.
