San Marco The Best Area Where To Stay In Venice

Best Area to Stay in Venice

The lagoon citys oldest and most famous quarter, San Marco has long been the beating heart of Venice.

Highly populated at any given time, San Marco is a popular meeting point for tourists, who can easily get their bearings from the square while taking in some of Venices most legendary sites along the way.

Built during the 11th century, St. Marks Basilica remains a prominent example of Byzantine architecture, with the connecting Palazzo Ducale or Doges Palace showcasing the resplendent wealth and mind-boggling power of the ruling Venetians.

Just outside the palace guests can stroll beneath Torre dellOrologio, St. Marks great astrological clocktower, or enjoy an espresso at Caffé Florian, which first opened its doors in the 18th century.

San Marcos prime location allows for stunning views of the lagoon and nearby islands, and hotels are typically at their priciest in this area.

If your heart is set on staying in San Marco, make sure to keep an eye out for off-season hotel deals and possible discounts, as lodgings can be extremely expensive near St. Marks.

Tickets You Should Buy Before Going To Venice

Word of caution, Venice gets busy!

If you truly want to see all the sights and visit each attraction without the worry of a huge two-hour line, I would suggest buying your tickets in advance.

Like I said before, most of the attractions are free to see, but for the ones that are not, it is best to book your times before you arrive in Venice, or else you might not be able to see all of what Venice has to offer.

These are the tickets you should buy in advance:

Throughout this post, I will explain more about what each ticket will provide for you and why I think its the best option.

Where To Stay In Venice For Travelling Around The Region

  • COOLEST thing to do in Mestre enjoy the excellent sports facilities in Parco San Giuliano including swimming pools and ice rinks
  • BEST place to visit in Mestre head to Le Barche shopping centre to pick up the latest in designer brands

Though officially a separate city from Venice, Mestre acts as the citys main gateway to the mainland and it is likely you will pass through it at some point on your way! This makes it ideal if you are looking to explore the wider Veneto region, as well as take short trips into Venice itself.

Mestre is often overlooked by visitors to the region, however, has some great attractions of its own. The main square is much more understated than the Piazzas of Venice, giving you a more laid back experience in the cafés and restaurants! It is also a great place to pick up designer brands.

  • Piazza Erminio Ferretto is the main square in the city and has some excellent cafés, restaurants and bars to mingle with locals
  • The watchtower on Piazza Erminio Ferretto is a worthwhile place to visit for panoramic views across Mestre and even towards Venice on a good day
  • Visiting with kids? Head to the mini train at Le Barche Shopping Centre where they can enjoy a short trip around the concourse
  • Check out local listings to discover which markets are on whilst there the city has a good variety offering food, art and souvenirs
  • Pasticceria Serenissima is a popular patisserie right in the heart of the city, offering typical treats from the region

Giudecca The Most Artistic Area

Venice Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia

All the 6 neighborhoods that I talked about above are connected by bridges to form the main island that is considered to be Venice city, but there are also some nice islands that surround this! Some of the most well-known ones are Murano, Burano and Giudecca, the latter being a great choice for accommodation as well.

I recommend staying in Giudecca if you want to TRULY experience how locals live in Venice, or if its not the first time youre visiting Venice. Why? Well, because Giudecca is not connected to the other parts of Venice by any bridges, so you will have to use the water taxis, water buses or ferries to get to the center, for example.

Today this quiet neighborhood is home to several artists studios and independent shops, so it attracts many young creative types if youre one of them, take a look at my hand-picked, fabulous hotels in this area:

That said, I normally dont stay in these areas unless we are filming there specifically, in which case it is a logistic decision. Here is why.

Best Places To Stay In Sardinia

The two main cities are Alghero and Cagliari though we also like Sassari! Alghero and Sassari are in the north, so have more connections with Corsica. If you are travelling elsewhere in Italy, Cagliari has ferries to a number of cities. The island is easy to get around, but we do recommend hiring a car for the best experience.

Best Airbnb in Sardinia: Hilltop Villa

Airbnb Luxe is the most premium brand on the website, featuring properties that go above and beyond. This dazzling villa comes with gorgeous views of the Mediterranean Sea and the hills that run through Sardinia! It can sleep up to ten guests across five bedrooms, so is an excellent option for larger families heading to the island. It also comes with a private pool.

Best Hostel in Sardinia: Hostel Sardinia

Sardinia is a notoriously expensive destination, but if youre strapped for cash you can save some money at Hostel Sardinia. Right in the heart of Cagliari, it is close to major transport links that can take you all over the island. They offer heavily discounted tours across Sardinia for guests every weekend. Breakfast is included, and the on-site bar is popular with both guests and locals.

Castello And The Venice Biennale

Castello is the place to be if you in Venice just for the Biennale which takes place at the Arsenal, the docks area of the city, once world famous for the naval industry.

Based on where you decide to base yourself, it can be a long walk to the San Marco Square.

I think this is another area that should be experienced on a second or even a third visit to the city.

Because Castello is a bit different from what you expect. The streets are quite wide, there are lots of squares around and there is a lack of that maze that makes this city famous for.

This does not mean it is an area of Venice to avoid. Not at all. Its just that you may get disappointed as a first-time visitor, however, you may be pleasantly surprised on a third time, when you try to avoid the touristy areas.

If staying or visiting this area of Venice, I suggest lunch or dinner at the Scalinetto, great guys that offer such a friendly service. Fish is king here.

Staying In Dorsoduro Best Restaurants And Close To The Centre

As I previously said, I love Dorsoduro and in my opinion, it is the best place to stay in Venice .

The reason I love this area is mostly due to the local feeling I get in restaurants and cafes. Of course, there are tourists also here but there is a good mix with people actually living here.

This means you get the best value for money wherever you go. Besides that, its more of a real experience. I remember one night having a drink more than usual and ending my night in a nightclub, in the underground behind a hidden door along a canal. A place surely not on TripAdvisor.

Here you find more of a young crowd with probably the best nightlife around Venice, although not really noisy.

You can also come easily to Dorsoduro for dinner and to spend the night from any other area. Absolutely a must. You will see the difference.

Campo Margherita tends to be the centre, a big square where it is not unusual to see kids playing football. On a sunny morning, all the cafes in the morning will be full of customers drinking cappuccino and eating a cornetto . Real Italian feeling.

The Suite 735 Bed & Breakfast is one of my favourite accommodations in Venice, located right in the heart of Dorsoduro. One of the best service ever, Federica and Vittoria even provide a mobile phone with their numbers on the list, besides maps etc. The design is absolutely gorgeous, in every single detail and the breakfast to die for.
