Most of the 371 rooms and suites here face the ocean and are spacious affairs with luxe contemporary decor and comfortable beds. Tech-forward amenities include in-room iPads that allow you to order room service while surfing the web, and electronic toilets in the marble baths.

Beyond the rooms are loads of amenities, including four pools, one of which is for kids. There is a massive spa and fitness center on the grounds offering all sorts of massage, facial, and body treatments to soothe your soul.

Choose from five different restaurants when it is time to eat: Mina’s Fish House is one option. It is run by James Beard Award-winning Chef Michael Mina and is his take on a traditional Hawaiian fish house.

Luana Waikiki Hotel & Suites

Staying On The Leeward Waianae Coast

Including Ko Olina & Makaha

On the drier west Leeward side of the island, you’ll discover the resort community of Ko’olina. It has the same resort feel to the area, unlike along the north and east/windward coasts, which have a more ‘local’ vibe to them.

Here you’ll find a selection of resorts, a golf course, a marina, and shopping and dining located in a small shopping center there’s even a Target, Walmart, and Costco nearby in Kapolei.

A couple of our favorite properties in Ko Olina are the Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina and the . For families, we also highly recommend the Aulani Disney Resort & Spa,

  • Wide range of water sports and activities along the coast
  • Just a 30-45 minute drive to Waikiki & Honolulu
  • Pristine beaches, championship golf course, and marina
  • Less congested than Waikiki more privacy and seclusion
  • A wide range of accommodations available
  • Close to a lot of lovely “off the beaten path” beaches, as well as interesting cultural sites. Large golf course
  • Makaha Beach is less known than the North Shore for pro surfing, but, nonetheless, hosts an annual longboard contest
  • Climate is generally dry and sunny
  • Sunset can be viewed best from the west side

Waikiki The Best Area To Stay In Honolulu

The area of Waikiki is world famous and achieved legendary status many years ago, which has been a particular favourite playground of Hawaiian royalty and that is literally enough to suggest why this place is the best place to stay in the city. The neighbourhood has city buses running through it, which connect up to all parts of the city and there are shuttle buses from the airport to Waikiki and vice versa, every half hour. There is a constant police presence in the area and for that reason, make it one of the safest places in Honolulu and in fact the only things to worry is the heat and the ocean as there can be powerful rips and currents as well as some of the biggest waves on earth.

As soon as you get to the district, the first thing that is in your mind is to get to the waterfront right away as this iconic view is one in million and is probably one of the most beautiful sights in the world. Once at the seafront, you are greeted with a series of glorious white sandy beaches, the stunning bay and its crystal clear waters and the icing on the cake being Diamond Head Crater, which is one of the most popular and scenic landmarks in Hawaii.

Other things to see include Kapiolani Park, which is a huge public park where you can relax and take in the magnificent views as well as play various recreational sports like tennis, bowls, football and golf.

Where To Stay In Honolulu :

If you want to stay in a lively area where you can easily walk to the beach, restaurants, bars, and more, Waikiki is where you should stay. I do want to mention though that if you stay in Waikiki, I highly recommend that you rent a car and make sure to get out of Waikiki on most days. It can be a bit of a tourist nightmare and the beaches elsewhere are much better. If you stay in Waikiki and never leave for the duration of your trip I can almost guarantee you will not love Oahu. I cannot stress this enough.

That being said, like I mentioned above I often choose to stay here because I really do think Waikiki Beach hotels and Honolulu hotels are some of the best options. After a day of exploring and driving around the last thing I want to do is get back in a car to drive to dinner. When you stay here you dont have to worry about that. Nor do you have to worry about drinking and driving! Its also convenient location-wise.

Cons Of Staying On The North Shore

-Depending on where you stay on the North Shore, you may be far from some things you want to go do, and the road network on that part of the island isnt as extensive as on the South Shore . As an example, if youre staying at the stunning Turtle Bay Resort, it could easily take 1.5 hours to drive to Diamond Head if you get stuck in traffic.

-Even within the North Shore itself, traffic can be a beast. Theres lots of traffic on the one road from Haleiwa to Sunset Beach , and it can take an hour to get to the Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie but its worth it! North Shore traffic is often worse on weekends when locals from town area heading up to enjoy the waves.-Dont expect the developed areas youll find in Waikiki. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from in Haleiwa town, but its quieter at night and there are no big chain stores.

Who Would Like Ko Olina

If you are a fan of Disney then you already know about Ko Olina. Home to the Aulani, a Disney Resort. See Mickey and all his friends in Aloha Shirts. Disney made Ko Olina famous when it opened Aulani in 2009

For everyone else, the question is Ko Olina or Waikiki? That will be a hard decision for most people. Ko Olina has a lot to offer for families of all ages, couples, honeymooners, wedding parties, and anyone else who likes resorts and beaches and warm weather.

Ko Olina has a lot to offer inside its gates with the lagoons, sports activities, expansive grassy lawns, luaus, and places to eat but it lacks nightlife. Ko Olina is for those who want a quiet, resort vacation in Hawaii compared to Waikiki.

Erica and I lived in Ko Olina for two-years. We loved it. The condo community had swaying palms, friendly neighbors, and we had the lagoons in our backyard. Compared to other towns on Oahu, Ko Olina was a fun place to live. Then Disney moved in. The place is still beautiful, albeit a little more crowded.

Kapolei Best Neighborhood In Oahu For Families

Turtle Bay Resort | Best Places To Stay On Oahu Hawaii Series | Part 2 of 7

When youre trying to decide where to stay in Oahu with kids, Kapolei is where you should spend your time. This is also where youll find some of the best bed and breakfasts in Oahu. Its safe and welcoming and contains lots of attractions that will keep the kids happy, active, and off your back. Kapolei also has lots of restaurants, cafes, and shops to keep you occupied as well, along with easy access to the beach.

Harry Beugelink

But it isnt all shopping, eating, and screaming kids either. This is the best neighborhood in Oahu to stay in if you want to learn about the local culture as there are lots of attractions geared at teaching you about the culture in an entertaining way. Unfortunately, you wont find as many budget accommodation options in this area, so if the price of the hotels scare you then try local apartments for a better deal.

Whats The Best Area Of The Island To Stay

OK! Airline tix are booked! We may stay in Honolulu area the 1st night bc we arrive on New Yrs Eve. But the rest of our stay, we would like to stay as far away as poss from the hustle & bustle. Ive looked at rentals in Haleiwa& Makaha. My daughter wants to learn to surf, and that is very high priority on our trip. We enjoy more laid back atmosphere rather than busy & crowds. We plan on doing alot of cooking, so restaurant variety is not high priority either. We have NEVER been to Oahu– so ANY advice or ideas would be so appreciated! My husband & I were married in Kauai& vacationed again in Maui. Not been to Oahu, but im hoping we like the laid back North Shore as much as we did the other 2 islands. We will be there New Years week. My 15 yr old stepdaughter has been wanting to learn to surf & we are hoping to get her up and riding the waves! Please help! Need to know where to stay! Thanks so much!

You are coming when the north and west shore surf will be at it’s highest. We’re talking anywhere from 5 feet to 40 feet. Not a place to teach someone how to surf. It’s also a bit wetter and cooler up there during this time. Makaha isn’t a place I generally take visitors or where most visitors stay. Waikiki will be the best place to take beginner surf lessons.

People who have never stayed in Waikiki often have a distorted view of the place. It really is a nice place to be.

Look too at Kaneohe. We have based ourselves there many times with very enjoyable results.
