Where To Stay In Hollywood
Ever since movies and their stars became international symbols of the good life, Hollywood has been a magnet to millions of tourists and an equal number of hopefuls drawn by the prospect of riches and glory.
In reality, this was a densely populated, low-income residential neighbourhood, and movie stars actually spent little time here leaving as soon as they could afford to for the privacy of the hills or coast.
Things have brightened up in the past few years, with the construction of new tourist plazas and shopping malls. The contrasting qualities of freshly polished nostalgia, corporate hype and deep-set seediness today make Hollywood one of LAs most diverse areas and one of its best spots for bar-hopping and clubbing.
Best for a quirky stay: Hollywood Bed & BreakfastThis B& B is set in a 1912 home that looks a little like something out of a Dr. Seuss book. It’s close to all the action with four cosy rooms and a small pool.
Best for modern simplicity:Magic Castle Hotel
Justly popular hotel boasting rooms and suites in a neat, modern style with heated pool and free soda, candy and cookies 24 hours a day.
Getting Around Los Angeles
The LA sprawl is real, and renting a car at the airport is your best bet to getting around with relative ease. There are public transportation options like the Metro, which can be great for getting to various destinations like downtown where it can be difficult to find parking. If braving Los Angeles freeways are not your thing car sharing services like Uber and Lyft, are aplenty and also a great option for when you want to go out at night.

Its an attractive and safe area for families to plant themselves while visiting the LA area.

Recommendations On Areas To Stay During Visit
Hi, my wife and I will be visiting the LA area in October. I’m trying to get an idea of what areas to stay at, we’re going to be visiting the Disney parks on 3 of those days so I was hoping to find something that might be central between LA and Anaheim.
I was originally looking at Downey, but I heard from someone who used to live in LA a long time ago that it’s a sketch place, just from looking on Google Maps though, logistically it seemed like it would make sense, as all of the areas we would want to visit are listed as being about a half hour away from Downey. Person who told me Downey was sketch was saying just to stay in Anaheim, but I’d rather avoid an hour long drive every day we’re not at Disney .
Any thoughts, guidance or recommendations on other areas would be greatly appreciated.

No! There is no central place between LA and Anaheim. Completely unworkable. You want a vacation. Not sitting in traffic for hours. Downey is a pleasant little suburban town. Whoever told you it is sketch is ignorant.
For Disneyland, you need to stay close to the park. You do NOT want to park every day at the park. The schlep factor is unacceptable. Disney is exhausting. You want to walk or take a short Uber or Lyft back to the hotel. Plan 4 nights in Anaheim for 3 days at Disneyland.
Can you fly in or out of John Wayne? This airport is close to the park.
Thanks again for this advice, super helpful.
Westwood Nice Place To Stay In Los Angeles For Backpackers
Westwood is a bustling hub where Los Angeles culture and the rest of the world intertwine to create an amazing place for shopping, dining and entertainment.
Much of Westwoods personality is owed to the fact that it is home to the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles .
One of the most distinctly Westwood experiences you can have is to catch a flick at the famed Fox Theater. Dating back to the 1930s, the theater has hosted many iconic movie premiers throughout the years.
Dont be surprised to see a red carpet rolled out if you happen to pass the theater on a weekend. Art lovers have every reason to visit Westwoods Hammer Museum. This free museum features an impeccably curated collection featuring works by Degas and Monet.
While on a museum spree, hit the Fowler Museum within the UCLA campus to see eclectic, world-class exhibits from artists throughout Africa, Asia and the Americas.
Some of Westwoods other notable attractions include the Murphy Sculpture Garden, the Geffen Playhouse, the Thursday Farmers Market on Broxton, the Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Gardens and the Planetarium at UCLA.
Of course, you cant tour the neighborhoods around UCLA without lining up along with students, faculty and locals to enjoy a world-famous ice-cream sandwich from iconic Diddy Riese.
You can also jump on Los Angeles Metro lines 2, 20, 302 and 305. Westwoods college town vibe makes it a less intimidating place to stay than some of the citys Hollywood-centric parts.

Venice Beach Where To Stay In Los Angeles On A Budget
Venice Beach is the ideal spot if you want to experience some amazing California beaches and a very cool and fun atmosphere sounds like a great vacation place, right?

Youll find plenty of great hostels and dorm rooms here for as little as US$40-50, which will help you save some pennies for sure.
While youre in the neighborhood, make sure to take a walk on Abbot Kinney Boulevard and Main Street , soak in some California sun on Venice Beach , see the Mosaic Tile House, explore the Venice Canals by boat or simply relax and soak in the unique atmosphere.
One of the best things about Venice Beach is that its super walkable thats why I recommend exploring it as much as you can!
Silver Lake: Best For Feeling Like A Local
Silver Lake and Echo Park are adjacent neighborhoods that are close to Chinatown and Downtown LA. Since these areas cater mostly to locals, there are amazing cafes, quirky boutiques, and hidden gems to explore. Theres really only one place to stay here thats not a vacation rental, and we think you should avoid vacation rentals in Los Angeles.
You should know before you choose to stay here that this is the epicenter of gentrification in Los Angeles. Its a desirable neighborhood, which has brought more demand and caused rising rent prices that have forced out communities that have lived here for decades in order to renovate their apartments and turn them into vacation rentals, or open a new hip clothing boutique.
Were not going to fix gentrification here, but you should go into staying in these two areas knowing the impact that your visit have had on this community. We definitely recommend staying in a hotel rather than a vacation rental, which takes much-needed long term housing units off the market in service of making landlords more money.
With all that being said, we really liked this area of the city, and its nicely located for visiting the adjacent neighborhoods like Downtown LA and Los Feliz .
Pros and Cons of Staying in Silver Lake
Pros: Theres a ton of great restaurants, bars, and more in the neighborhood. Plus, its surrounded by other cool areas to explore, and close to Dodger Stadium, Elysian Park, and Griffith Park.

Downtown: At The Heart Of Los Angeles
The downtown area is the financial hub of Los Angeles, but surprisingly, it is also a center for art and culture and has excellent restaurants. From a purely aesthetic point of view, downtown Los Angeles is characterized by the many tall skyscrapers and daring modernist buildings, such as the Walt Disney Concert Hall or Our Lady of Angels Cathedral. It is also one of the areas that are most accessible by public transportation in the city. For more information, please read my recommended route to Los Angeles Downtown.
Its not a particularly lively area at night, when offices tend to empty out and move people to other neighborhoods, but its also pretty close to other points of interest, so you can move around easily by car: 25 minutes from Santa Monica and Beverly Hills and about 20 minutes from Hollywood and Universal Studios. The distance from Disneyland is also fairly convenient: 30 minutes without traffic and about 50 minutes during rush hour.
