Vacation Rentals Vs Hotels In Paris

A word on vacation rentals before we dive in.

We used to love staying in vacation rentals when we traveled, particularly if were staying in a place for more than a couple of days. Its so nice to have your own space, access to a kitchen, and more.However. Today, platforms like Airbnb are very different than they were even five years ago. It used to be a place for people to rent out extra spaces in their homes, like a basement apartment or a backyard bungalow. Now, its more real estate companies buying up entire buildings to transform into a mini-Airbnb empire.

For that reason, we are avoiding Airbnb in cities, particularly where theres an overtourism problem. And Paris is certainly on that list.

The biggest problem we see with Airbnb is twofold. First, it takes valuable units that could be used for long term housing for locals and transforms them into short term rentals for tourists, which means you end up with popular neighborhoods that have more tourists than locals. Second, the result of that is that locals, particularly those with lower incomes, get pushed out of the places theyve called home for years, or even decades. Weve seen it happen at home in San Francisco and Seattle, and it doesnt feel great.

We strongly, strongly recommend you choose a hotel while youre in Paris. We love the idea of Airbnb too, but we dont love the impact it is having on local communities.

    St And 2nd Arrondissements

Okay! So, the 1st and 2nd arrondissements are popular with Americans because between the two of them you are centralized, have the hussle and bustle of Paris shops and bistros/cafes, and have the Place de Vendome and Tuileries right there with obvious views or easy walks to the Seine.

The 2nd arrondissement is also where a lot of Parisians work so its more affordable, and it has the highest collection of metro lines, so you can shorten the walking distance to your favorite attractions.

Paris : Hotel De Ville / Southern Marais

Price Point: $$$$Attractions: Le Marais, Ile de la Cite, Ile de Louis, Notre DameVisit vs. Stay: Stay Encompassing half of Ile de la Cite, all of Ile de Louis , and the southern part of Le Marais, the 4th Arrondissement is obscenely popular. With some of the most spectacular real-estate in Paris, this waterfront area is on the expensive end of the accommodation spectrum. I recommend staying at Hôtel Saint-Louis en l´Isle or Hôtel Marais Paris Caron de Beaumarchais.

Pros: The center of everything great views of La Seine, the winding streets of Marais, and the boutiques of Ile de Louis.Cons: With popularity comes tourists, and with tourists comes grumpy waiters. Yes, you may get the best views of the Seine and Notre Dame, but that can come at the price of consistency and temperament!

Bastille Rpublique And Nation Cheaper Accommadation

Bastille is often viewed as a much cheaper alternative to staying in the Marais neighborhood with access to most of the same attractions. Of course, Bastille more than hold its own with help from some great institutions.

The Parc Zoologique de Paris, Opéra Bastille and Le Musee du Fumeur top the list of the best Bastille attractions. You should also expect great shopping and dining in what is quickly becoming one of the hippest corridors in Paris.

History buffs often focus on République due to the fact that this neighborhood is both an affordable option and a gateway into French history. Youll be able to jump from a stroll along the idyllic, soothing Canal Saint-Martin to the busy heart of the neighborhood that houses the famed Monument to the French Republic.

This part of the city also has a real up-and-coming vibe due to its many new comedy clubs and bars. This is a naturally lively spot that serves as the home base for many of the citys concerts, food festivals and parades throughout the year. The République station serves the area.

For history buffs, Place de la Nations dark history is enough to make them need to tour this slice of Paris in person. Place de la Nation is known for being the most active site for guillotines during the French Revolution.

The big perk of staying in Place de la Nation is that youll get a taste of a residential neighborhood where very few tourists stay.
