Beautiful But Less Touristy Area To Stay For A Family
We are headed to Maui this Spring and are trying to figure out which area is best to stay in. We have a 3 and 5 year old and we prefer to rent homes or condos. We also love food but don’t really like to be in tourist trap areas. We typically like hidden gems/quaint areas or just areas that are not over run by cheesy souvenir shops and other touristy things that crowd out the beauty and culture of a place. Can anyone suggest where we should look? Thanks!
If you can give us a budget, per night, that would help a lot in suggesting places. Most people stay in West Maui or South Maui. There are pros and cons to both sides, but both areas have wonderful beaches, and great restaurants, for all budgets.
There will be souvenir shops south and west too.
If you don’t mind driving to the beach, you should check out Upcountry.
Are you familiar with VRBO at all? Start there, just to get an idea of what is out there. You can plunk in your dates, and use the filters to make the list smaller. Even if you don’t book with vrbo, at least it will give you a starting point, to see what is out there.
You won’t find many cottages or homes on Maui that are off-the-beaten path because there are laws that severely limit vacation rentals outside of designated tourist areas. There are a few in Upcountry and elsewhere that have permits but they will not be convenient to the beaches that would be best for small children.
What is your lodging budget? What are your dates?

Wailea Vs Kaanapali: Which One Is Better
Okay, if you ask this question in any Facebook group or forum, youre going to get some definitive answers. Most people definitely think theres a best place to stay between the two. Unfortunately, theres not usually much consensus. In my experience, most people just tend to recommend wherever they ended up staying. The area they stayed and the specific resort is usually the best on the island. Not helpful plus if youve only stayed in one place how would you know.
People that have stayed in both Wailea and Kaanapali usually have a preference between the two but will be quick to tell you that theyre both greatit just depends what youre looking for.
ITS A GOOD THING YOU HAVE ME. Ive stayed everywhere, done it all, seen the good, the bad, and the ugly and Im ready to share my opinions with you. SoooooWailea vs Kaanapaliwhich is better? Well, it depends. I wish there were a cut and dry answer for you here, but theres not. Its complicated and really does depend on what you like and what your budget is.

Best Areas To Stay At In Maui
My wife and I have bought our tickets to be in Maui for 10 days from June 23rd. We’re now looking at apartment rentals, but we wonder what area of the island is best to stay at?
We’d prefer an area that has nice sandy beaches walking distance , as well as restaurants/stores not very far…We found lots of options in Kihei and Maalaea areas, but the beaches looked rocky… not sure if there are better places, or is it our best bet?
Any suggestion would be great!
thanks in advance!
Sugar Beach runs from North Kihei to Maalaea, beautiful sandy beach about 3 miles long. Not many restaurants and stores along Sugar Beach though. South Kihei has some great sandy beaches, rocky outcrops are at the ends of the beaches. Many restaurants and stores in south Kihei.
Which is best?? Either. You have some folks who only want to stay in the West area and others like myself that love the South area
Check out this website:
We stay at the Outrigger Royal Kahana. We have been very pleased with the accomodations and would recommend them!!
Welcome to the forums!
If you can pin down which area you like, West Maui or South Maui , come back and then we can help with more specific units.

Have fun planning!

Where To Stay In Maui On A Budget
Kihei and Wailuku are the most affordable places to stay in Maui.
If you want a beach vacation that wont break the bank, head to Kihei. Never mind the luxury resorts with their ridiculously high resort fees, thats not what youre looking for. You want to be close to the action and explore the best that the Valley Isle has to offer. In that case, its best to rent one of the many Maui accommodations nearby the gorgeous Kihei beaches yet close to the main roads. This oceanfront condo overlooking Sugar beach, for example, is very reasonably priced and gets glowing reviews.
If you dont necessarily need to stay near the beach, then you can make it even more affordable by staying in Wailuku in Central Maui. Check out this modern one-bedroom condo.
Then again, you might find an affordable gem in some of the more expensive parts of the island too. Have a look at this remodelled condo in Kahana about halfway between Kaanapali and Kapalua.
Kapalua West Maui Where To Stay In Maui For Best Beaches
This development on former plantation land is purely to attract tourism. Kapalua is on the northwest coast of Maui along the Honoapiilani Highway extending from Kapalua and Honolua Bays. It is fairly small, covering just under 5 square miles with an additional small section of water.
The Resort has plenty of accommodation, good restaurants, shopping, and golf courses. Golf became a popular tourist attraction in Hawaii some years ago.
The beaches are also something that ensures tourists will always consider Hawaii for a relaxing holiday and Kapalua has plenty. Kapalua Bay received the honour, Best Beach in the World from one travel magazine, and Best Beach in America on our listings.
The Kapalua Plantation Course in Kapalua hosts the PGA Tours Tournament of Champions each January while the Bay Course is equally impressive. It is not always possible to find a suitable tee time so booking in advance is important. There are other public courses on Maui so it is a thriving golf holiday destination.
Attractions nearby including Kapalua Golf Resort, Honokowai Beach Park, Royal Kaanapali Golf Course, Whalers Village Shopping Center, Whalers Village Museum, Lahaina Cannery Shopping Center, Front Street Lahaina, Lahaina Historic District, Iao Needle State Monument, and Iao Valley State Park.

Where To Stay In Maui By Region: West Maui Vs South Maui And Beyond
The main airport in Maui, Kahului Airport, is located in Central Maui. From there, youll stay in one of these resort areas in Maui:
- In West Maui: Kaanapali or Kapalua.
- In South Maui: Wailea or Kihei.
- On the North shore: Paia or Haiku. This is also where to start your Road to Hana adventure. Hana itself is located in East Maui. However, Hana is pretty remote and not the best place to stay on Maui if youre planning on exploring the other sides of the island. Its good to spend a night or two, though, just not your entire trip.
- In Upcountry Maui: Makawao or Kula.
- In Central Maui: Kahului or Wailuku.
Let me break down each of these locations by character.
Wailea Best For Luxury Travellers
If youre a person who loves to travel in style then Wailea, a town located in South Maui, is the top choice for you. Maui is home to some of the most beautiful and high-end resorts. This south side town has many luxurious activities, like renting a luxury vehicle and driving around the area that looks exactly like in the movies. Have you ever heard of pineapple wine? Because I havent and I feel like having some right now! in Wailea you can visit a vineyard on the south side and try some of this unique wine.
Tons of sunshine and not so many rainy days, the perfect way to describe this southside spot, the weather here is even drier than West Maui, and the beach is really good if you want to try snorkeling, paddleboarding, and kayaking. If you get tired of all the beach fun, although that might be hard, you can hit the shops at Wailea for a change of scenery.
Kahului Airport, which is situated on the North Shore, is just 30 minutes away from Wailea. This South Maui town is known for its unique crescent-shaped beaches. If you love that sense of privacy then you should check out this place to stay the beaches in South Maui are a lot less crowded than the others.
- Go on an ocean adventure
- Enjoy a Hawaiian show on the south side
- Walk the trail at Wailea Beach Path
- Swimming at Keawakapu Beach
