San Marco Is The Most Popular And Touristy

San Marco is a beautiful town that captures all the idealistic imaginings of a trip to Venice! Its the neighborhood of Venice where iconic sights like St. Markâs Basilica, the Dogeâs Palace and the Bridge of Sighs are located. Its no wonder, then, that San Marco is known as the tourist heart of Venice.

Choose a hotel in San Marco if you want to be in the heart of the Venetian atmosphere, enjoy a more touristy setting, and dont mind crowds! If you are looking for which sestieri to choose for a first-time trip, San Marco is probably the best option. This district will give you all the touristy options you can imagine while being home to some of the most famed, iconic, and romantic sites in Europe!

Considering its the most popular and touristy, expect there to be crowds of people, especially from March-October, and prepare to come with a big budget for anything and everything like food and gondola rides!

Upsides: Its the home to everything you ever dreamed about Venice. Some of the most iconic and gorgeous buildings are located in the sestiere of San Marco. You only have to visit this particular sestiere to feel like youve experienced Venice. Its a great choice for a first-time trip to Venice!

Downsides: Very expensive, plays up to tourists so everything costs more. Less of an authentic, local feel. Extremely busy and crowded, especially between March and October.

San Marco Best For First Time Visits To Venice

The iconic Venice of the television documentaries and holiday brochures, San Marco takes its name from the citys patron saint, whose depiction of a winged lion can be seen right across the neighbourhood.

Although Saint Marks Square takes most of the headlines with famous attractions including the Doges Palace, St Marks Basilica and Campanile, drift down an alleyway or over one of the citys 400-plus bridges and youll soon be rubbing shoulders with the 50,000 locals who still live in and around this magisterial UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Where To Stay In Venice: San Marco Area

San Marco is the most central neighborhood in Venice, the one where you have the famous Piazza San Marco, the Doges Palace, The Bridge of Sights and the iconic Rialto Bridge.

This is a wonderful area of Venice, the area all tourists come to see, and it is the part of Venice that feels the most like a labyrinth: the streets here are tiny, packed with things to see and feel like a wonderful and magical maze!

The area is stunning and very much a must see when in Venice however, I would consider carefully if this is the best place for you to stay.

While the location is very convenient, the crowds here are intense and the prices high

  • Reasons to stay in San Marco: proximity to all main attractions, very scenic area, full of services and restaurants.
  • Reasons not to stay in San Marco: touristy, pricey, some of the smaller streets can be feel oppressive
  • Best for: first time visitors who want to see the main sights and may need to maximize their time.

How To Get Around Venice

Venice is a big comune, much bigger than the overwater area surrounded by canals where most tourists wants to stay and see. If you google Venice you can be tempted to book accommodation that looks good and cheap, but you may find yourself an hour away by bus from the actual overwater Venice.

The overwater part is not anywhere near Venezia Mestre train station. If youre coming by train you need to get off at Venezia Santa Lucia station.

If youre coming by plane to Marco Polo Airport you can take a water taxi to Venice directly or take a bus to Piazzale Roma, which takes about half an hour.

You need to walk around Venice as there are no cars allowed on the island , but you can take water taxis. There are local small boats that will get you across smaller canals or bigger bus-type water taxis.

If youre staying in Guideca youll need a water bus to get across. It works just fine and takes 3 minutes to get to San Marco square, but it requires a single ticket or tourist pass its a no-brainer, get a pass.

Why Stay In Cannaregio

10 Instagrammable Places in Venice

Just like San Marco, Cannaregio is on the banks of the Grand Canal, but it is slightly less crowded. Cannaregio is a fantastic spot to explore if youre a history enthusiast, because the district is filled with historic landmarks. Of particular note is the Jewish Ghetto, which is home to the Jewish Museum. Along the banks of the Grand Canal, Cannaregio boasts a variety of eateries and access to water transportation.

While in Cannaregio, one of the top things to do is explore the incredible Ca dOro, a Venetian palace that is open for self and guided tours. Nearby, you could admire the Renaissance art and architecture of the Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli or spot the artist Tintorettos burial place, the Church of Madonna dellOrto. Further from the Grand Canal, Cannaregio houses roughly one-third of Venices population. That means that youll have an easy time finding grocery stores, dry cleaners, banks and other necessary amenities to enhance your trip. Cannaregio can also feel like an authentic view of Venice, but it still just a 15-minute walk to the major attractions in the neighboring district of San Marco.
