Where To Stay In Bilbao Spain

Best Neighbourhood In Bilbao For Your First Time

5 BEST Places to Visit in BILBAO, Spain, on a Day Trip!
  • COOLEST thing to do in Casco Viejo catch a live theatre, dance or music performance at Arriaga Theatre
  • BEST place to visit in Casco Viejo head to Mercado de la Ribera the largest covered market in Europe with great fresh produce!

Casco Viejo, which translates as Old Town, is Bilbaos main historic district and a great spot if you are interested in architecture and local culture! The narrow streets are filled with historic buildings, magnificent churches and hole-in-the-wall restaurants showcasing local cuisine.

Of these restaurants, we recommend trying out the pintxo bars. Pintxos are the Basque version of Tapas and are highly popular with locals and tourists alike! Though there is some nightlife in Casco Viejo, it is a little more touristy than in other areas of the city perfect if you are simply looking for a cheap place to grab a drink.

Where To Stay Between Bilbao And Barcelona

Hi, my wife and I are driving from Bilbao to Barcelona in the middle of July and as it’s our first time in Northern Spain we’d like to see a bit of the country rather than just drive it in a day.

We are planning to spend a day and a bit in Bilbao and were thinking of stopping in:

Logrono as it’s the centre of La Rioja, but as it’s July maybe it’s not as good as it would be in Sept/Oct when the wine adds something to it.

Escarrilla as it’s in the Pyrenees but obviously there won’t be any snow but it’s somewhere different.

Anyway, we’d appreciate any input that people have on where to stay and what to do as we’ve nothing booked yet and are flexible about dates.

Many thanks

Where To Stay In Bilbao Castaos

bilbao

Its hard to imagine that when Castaños emerged in the 19th century, it was the neighborhood of the bourgeoisie. Enjoy a walk along the wide river boulevard.

The district turned into a real working-class neighborhood with narrow streets, a central square, and authentic one-man businesses. In the late afternoon, the square fills up and buzzes with the sounds of bubbling residents and playing children. It is also the departure point of the historic funicular to Mount Artxanda, for beautiful views of the Zubizuri bridge and surrounding area in Northern Spain.

Where To Shop In Bilbao

Bilbao has some seriously good shopping. The Casco Viejo boasts smaller, quirkier boutiques the grand avenue of Via de Don Diego Lopez de Haro is home to chains such as Zara and the old department store El Corte Ingles Gran Via and the Plaza Moyua has all the luxury stores. Plenty of pedestrianized streets lead off of the main drag and off of Plaza Moyua.

For something a little different, there are the markets. The flower market takes over the area around Arenal Park every Sunday morning, and in the same location youll find an organic local produce market between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

If you like markets, the Mercado de la Ribera is a must-see, not just for the fresh produce on sale over three floors, but also for the art deco building dating to 1930. Right by the side of the river nearby, youll find plenty of smaller stores and cafes below an arcade.
