Cedar Breaks National Monument
Sometimes National Monuments really surprise me, and this was definitely the case at Cedar Breaks. It looks a LOT like Bryce Canyon National Park, minus the crowds and development surrounding the park. This natural amphitheater is over 2,000 feet deep and three miles wide. You can see all of the different layers of rock, and the cool hoodoo formations that were left behind. Utah has some great national parks, but you shouldnt miss this Utah National Monument!
From Cedar City, its about a 30-minute drive to Cedar Breaks National Monument. The road is open from May through October, as the Monument is over 10,000 feet elevation. There are hiking trails along the rim to various overlooks, and sunset is a great time to visit! We made a loop and returned the northern route through Brian Head. No matter when you visit Cedar Breaks, bring a jacketits chilly that high up!

Enjoy The Utah Shakespeare Festival
One of the finest Shakespeare festivals in the world, the Utah Shakespeare Festival at Southern Utah University is a Tony Award-winning production running through the summer and into early fall. Three Shakespeare productions are staged each season, as well as modern plays.
Taking in a show is much more than a simple night at the theater. Set in a playhouse modeled on Shakespeares original Globe Theatre in London, the preshow activities are half the fun. The Green Show features puppet shows, strolling minstrels, vendors selling various treats, and more. Visitors can also enjoy backstage tours, special literary lectures, and seminars on props and costumes. The adjacent Shakespeare Character Garden is filled with sculptures of Shakespearean characters.
Utah isnt the first place people think of when they think of Shakespearean destinations and that is exactly what first attracted me to the area. Its unexpected and unique and provides a welcome dose of art and culture in a region most famous for its natural attractions and adventures.

Fun Things To Do In Cedar City Utah
The best part of writing a Utah guidebook is exploring new cities and places I havent already been to. Of course, I spent a lot of time in Utah before moving here, but Cedar City was new to me. I had passed through en route to Bryce Canyon National Park but never stopped to look around. Its really a cute town and I was surprised by all the fun things to do in Cedar City Utah, including lots of cool outdoor activities. We stayed here for a few days before embarking on a Bryce Canyon to Capitol Reef road trip.

Cedar City Sits One Mile + 500 Ft Above Sea Where The Markagunt Plateau Smashed Into The Great Basin
Lifting a desert so far off the ground makes for great outdoorism all year round: every winter sport from December to April and hiking, biking, camping, glamping, climbing, etc. from April to… well… April. It’s a big little town with hobbies for miles and plenty of lodging options for the steady stream of party people. Brian Head and Eagle Point are Utah’s highest ski resorts, just up the road, and Southern Utah University adds that exciting dash of youthful energy and cheap restaurants every town needs. Competing factions* within the Cedar City Tourism Bureau champion two different nicknames for their town:
Some call it “Gateway to the National Parks” because it’s one hour from Zion, 90 minutes from Bryce Canyon and 3 hours from Capitol Reef or the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Buy a National Parks Pass and set up base camp in Cedar. Then, when you get tired of those , expand your net and explore places like Cedar Breaks National Monument, only 30 minutes away in the heart of the Dixie National Forest.
Others call it “Festival City, USA.” Because it has a lot of festivals. For Shakespeare, for livestock, for music, for wild flowers, for classic cars and films. There’s a bike race, a summer sports competition, a rodeo, and a Christmas parade of storybook characters. With all this celebratory foot traffic, they should add an annual Main Street Resurfacing Festival.
