Historic District Or Waterfront
This will be my first visit to Charleston and I’m wondering whether to stay on the water, or in the historic district, right near the King Street area. Both look lovely.
We will be staying with friends who will have a car, and we plan to just wander around the downtown historic area, the waterfront area, and go to the plantations. Is either area better suited for a tourist such as myself, who loves to walk out the door of their hotel and be amongst nice shops, restaurants and cafes, particularly at night?
Thank you!
Actually, I just realized I was confused and the waterfront area is really close to the historic King Street / Market Street area. Oops. lol
I was going to say that we don’t really have a separate waterfront area. 🙂 When looking for hotels, historic district and downtown are NOT the same thing. Historic District is walkable to historic sites, great restaurants, shopping, etc. Downtown is not walkable to much of anything. You will need the car to visit plantations or a beach.
The Mr and I had a fabulous stay at The Vendue. We were in close proximity to lots of great sites, restaurants, the waterfront, etc. We walked to almost everything we were interested in seeing and doing. Charleston is very walkable!
We did rent a car on two different days to visit plantations, the beach, the Angel Oak Tree, etc,

French Quarter The Coolest Area To Stay In Charleston Sc

The French Quarter is a smaller part inside of downtown Charleston and is the historic district of the city with colorful buildings, cobblestone streets, historical churches, and great museums. I think it is so cool to stay in such a historic neighborhood at the heart of the city if you want to discover the culture and history of Charleston. So, lets start exploring!
If you are a person like me who enjoys discovering a place on foot and getting lost in the streets, French Quarter is that kind of neighborhood that is full of surprises. One thing is for sure, you can expect to see the beautiful architecture on every corner, historic landmarks, and nice art galleries.
FUN FACT: The Charleston dance which became one of the most popular dance styles on Broadway in the1920s takes its name from Charleston City. But in fact, Charleston evolved from the dances of enslaved African-Americans. When they were banned from playing musical instruments they started to make beats with their body and claps and Charleston dance emerged.
Another beautiful thing about this area is the Ravenel Waterfront Park which has amazing lush green areas and spectacular views of the Charleston Harbor. Can the French Quarter get any better?
