Where To Stay: Potters House

For fans of the Anne of Green Gables series written by L.M. Montgomery and set in PEI, a visit to the island can be a storybook vacation when staying at the Potters House in the town of New London.

A historic 3-bedroom property, this sunny-coloured yellow farmhouse dates back to the 1800s, and has the quaint appearance of the homes from Montgomerys fictional Avonlea village.

Home is where the quilts are when vacationing in a cottage on the shore. Wicker furniture, floral wallpaper and cozy quilts create a warm interior that invites guests back to simpler times.

While the cottage is equipped with a DVD player, urbanites looking to turn off will do better at relaxing if they bring along a few board games to play in the evening after a fresh lobster dinner prepared in the cottages snug kitchen.

When visiting the North Shore in July and August, your days are spent outside lounging in the sun, whether on the beach or, in the case of guests of the Potters House, unwinding in the sprawling backyard, looking out into the fields PEI has a lot of fields.

Shopping doesnt quite fit into a country retreat agendathat is unless its handcrafted pottery youre purchasing rather than a new pair of Louboutins. Luckily for guests of Potters House, the nearest shop is the inspiration behind the cottages name. Owned by husband and wife, Ian Scot and Daphne Large, wife Daphne and daughter Suzanne both potters also run Village Pottery shop, a stones throw away from the cottage.

Things To Do | Charlottetown, PEI

Before you decide on a Prince Edward Island hotel, you need to decide what regions you want to prioritize.

Prince Edward Island is essentially split up into four areas western, Charlottetown, central, and eastern.

Though youll find Charlottetown in the central area, Ive split them up into distinct zones for the sake of this guide. Charlottetown is very much the hub of the island, and the central zone outside of Charlottetown is much more off-grid.

Though the east and west sides of the island are decidedly more rural, they are great places to base yourself if you have specific items you want to check off your bucket list .

And September was a great time to visit. Summer temperatures and few tourists. I walked the beach alone in the mornings, encounterd only one or two people who came toward me smiling. Charlottetown Where To Stay In Prince Edward Island On A Budget

Darryl Brooks

Charlottetown is the most visited place on Prince Edward Island. Despite being the islands capital since 1765, it retains a small-town vibe and is a great location for budget travelers.

The colourful streets are unchanged since the 19th century boom, which eventually led to the formation of an independent Canada. There are plenty of places to stay in the historic Birthplace of Canada and a lot of things to do, as well.

Anne Of Green Gables In Cavendish

When Lucy Maud Montgomery published her novel, Anne of Green Gables, early in the 20th century she would have had no idea just how popular it would become. The story is set in the fictional Village of Avonlea which stands in for Montgomerys beloved Cavendish.

Throngs of tourists make the trek to PEI each year just to see where the novel takes place and to pay homage to the red-headed orphan. Many more get caught up in Anne fever once they are there and find themselves visiting at least one of the attractions devoted to her, if not several. My daughters and I are fans of spunky Anne so we have visited most of the Anne sites at least once over the years.

Green Gables Heritage Place, which provided the inspiration for Lucy Maud Montgomery to write her famous novel, is now operated by Parks Canada as part of Lucy Maud Montgomerys Cavendish National Historic Site.

There is no longer an admission charge so its still worth visiting to see the buildings and browse the shops or grab a bite to eat or a coffee at Samuels Coffee House.

Prince Edward Island Is A Rural Idyll

Prince Edward Island is a rural idyll. Charlottetown is small enough to be friendly, easy to get around and with plenty of historical interest from the old residential buildings to the government buildings. The Confederation discussions which historically were so important to Canada took place here. We were on holiday in Nova scotia but decided to spend a few days on PEI as its only a 75 min ferry crossing from Pictou to Wood Island. A good decision. The island is bigger than we thought so only managed to see some of it in 3 days. Our favourite was the small coastal town of Georgetown. Lovely walks and great food in the one restaurant right on the shore.
