Borgo San Felice: A Tuscan Veteran Gets A Makeover
It says something about Tuscan pride, taste, and building standards that farmworkers’ housing should lend itself so readily to becoming a luxury Relais & Châteaux resort, but so it has proved at Borgo San Felice. This once-thriving settlement on a big estate in the heart of the Chianti Classico wine region, which opened as a hotel in 1990, is once again ready for prime time after a three-year renovation that added 11 guest rooms and suites, bringing the total to 60. The previously rather staid décor was refreshed by design studio ArchFlorence in a style that exudes Tuscan heraldic class, but is also bright and contemporary .
Grapes are still off-loaded near the main piazza of this working wine estate, while the Borgo’s agricultural remit is combined with a social mission in a horticultural project that pairs diversely abled youths with retired farmers from the area. The resort’s informal Osteria del Grigio and the Michelin-starred fine-dining restaurant Poggio Rosso are both helmed by young Colombian chef Juan Quintero, who pays homage to hearty Tuscan traditions in dishes like a risotto with wild boar and black kale. And Borgo San Felice has another new arrow to its quiver. It poached one of Italy’s most professional general managersDanilo Guerrini, formerly of the legendary Tuscan seaside resort Il Pellicanowho has taken standards of service to the very highest level. borgosanfelice.it doubles from $618.
Val Dorcia Undulating Hills Never
The Val dOrcia, natural and protected area in the countryside south of Siena, is quite different from Chianti, still amazing but in a different way. This is probably the most beautiful part of Tuscany for unique landscape made of isolated farmhouses, castles, soft undulating hills, solitary cypress trees, never-ending views, and stunning medieval hill towns like Bagno Vignoni, Montalcino, Montepulciano, Monticchiello and Pienza this last one of the most beautiful hill towns of Italy.
All the area is famous all around the world for its fine wines, notably the Brunello of Montalcino, and the Nobile of Montepulciano, not to mention its delicious food and local specialties. The countryside here is impressive, theres a lot to see and do, its enchanting hill towns are perched on top of steep hills like in a fairytale
I recommend staying in Pienza and its surrounding hills, or in the characteristic thermal village of Bagno Vignoni. Pienza is simply breathtaking, and its pecorino cheese is superb! The area is full of amazing country villas and chic farmhouses like Villa Mia or Villa Romantica a dream!
Near Pienza is the small village of Bagno Vignoni, one of the most romantic places to stay in Italy a characteristic borgo with fantastic thermal baths and an amazing square with an ancient Renaissance pool at its center. At one corner of the piazza, is the charming B& B La Locanda del Loggiato that offers great breakfasts and lovely views of the square.

Pienza An Ideal City With Spiritually
Pienza is a small hilltop village within Valle dOrcia known for its stunning piazza, churches and traditional pecorino cheese, considered the best in Tuscany.
The road to Pienza features winding roads, golden fields of vineyards, olive groves and Italian cypress trees, giving this landscape a magical glow.
Once known as Corsignano, the town was revitalized by legendary humanist Enea Silvio Piccolomini, who would later become Pope Pius II, into an ideal city with distinct Renaissance features.
The Piazza Pio II is the villages central square, designed in a trapezoidal shape by architect Bernado Rossellini with several formidable buildings.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, built in 1459, is a magnificent religious monument with three interior naves and beautiful altarpiece paintings.
Next to the cathedral is the Palazzo Vescovile, or Bishops palace. Once the home of Pope Alexander VI, the building now contains the Diocesan Museum. Here youll find religious manuscripts, Renaissance artworks and ancient tapestries.
Walk along the Corso Rossellino to one of Pienzas artisan cheese shops selling the world-famous pecorino cheese, made from local sheeps milk.
While you can hit all of Pienzas main sights within a day, many stay for the utter romance and magic of Pienza, captured in aptly named streets like Via del Bacio, or Street of the Kiss, and Via dellAmore, or the Street of Love.

Vitigliano Relais & Spa: The Villa That Thinks It’s A Hotel

From a cabana next to the ice-blue pool at Vitigliano, the view takes in Tuscan hills cloaked in dark woods and vivid green patches of vines. As you sip a glass of wine, your thoughts might turn to the heavy responsibilities that come with a Tuscan villa rental. Things like cooking dinner, washing dishes, keeping things tidy.
No need to worry about that here. Vitigliano, an 11th-century farm in Chianti that was converted into an eight-suite boutique hotel in 2015, now offers the best of both worlds. In 2019, its owners decided to accept only whole-property bookings, but retained most of the services of a high-end resort.
The décor is a refreshing mix of high and lowMurano chandeliers hang from weathered ceiling beams and flea-market items sit next to original Bauhaus pieces. There’s a small hammam and a dungeon of a wine cellar with some stellar bottles, all available at near cost price, on the honor system. Enjoy them at dinner made by your resident chefperhaps house-made fettuccine with guanciale, pecorino, and a light snowfall of black pepper. Now all you need to do is talk some friends into sharing the place with you. vitigliano.com villa from $582.

Where To Stay In Chianti
Its best to have clear in your mind the kind of location and what type of vacation accommodations you prefer before booking and to book before departure, to avoid losing your valuable vacation time searching for a place to stay. Similarly, its recommendable to select a base and stick to it. Changing your accommodation every 3-4 days can wipe out a whole day with each change.
The types of holiday accommodation offered in Chianti are well describedhere in summary: hotels, villa hotels, villas, farmhouses, apartments and rooms, including B& B rooms. There is sometimes confusion about what constitutes a villa in Chianti. A true villa is a large structure with numerous rooms, while a family-sized, stand-alone house is basically going to be a farmhouse, a casa colonica. What type of accommodation you pick for your stay in Chianti basically hinges on how many of you there are, on whether you want a swimming pool and/or garden or not and on your budget. Beautiful accommodation is available in the towns and countryside of Chianti. You can expect to rent a comfortable village or rural self-catering apartment accommodation with a private swimming pool for less than the price of a hotel room in a city. In addition, there are rooms with and without breakfast available at wineries and in towns and villages throughout Chianti, Italy.

Chianti Wine Towns to Visit
The Strada del Chianti connects Florence to Siena via the SR 222 and is one of the most scenic routes in Italy. When driving along this road, its a winding road up and over and through acres of idyllic Tuscan vineyards, charming little hamlets with churches and abbeys.
If you start early enough in the morning, when the roads are still quite and there are no bicyclists, its possible to visit all of the following Chianti towns in a day. But be prepared to stop every so often along the side of the road, in unofficial pull-out sections to snap a few photos of the picturesque Tuscan countryside.
Greve in Chianti
Often referred to as theGateway to Chianti, Greve in Chiantiis a great place to begin any road trip along the Chianti Road.
The highlight of Greve in Chianti is undoubtedly the oddly shaped piazza, with a charming little church at the focal point. A quick walk around and you can pop into a few local shops selling traditionally made in Italy goods from hand towels and table runners to pasta shops.
We began our day here by enjoying a Cornetto al Cioccolato or a Cornetto al Pistachio with our espressi.
If you happen to be in town on a Saturday morning, youll also discover that the entire square will be filled with pop up market stalls for locals to complete their weekly shopping and catching up with neighbors.

From Florence, you can easily reach Lucca and Pisa with a short train trip, and Siena by bus .
If you plan to visit the Chianti area or the South of Tuscany, then you better rent a car or join an organised tour.
